Just about to test for her +5 but wanted to get a couple questions in before i fall over dead from exhaustion.
Talked to other vet - finally - first I want to say these are vets I've gone through my cats serious illnesses with, with much help and concern and openess to my knowledge and wanting to be hands on in their care. They've slowly changed and gotten very money hungry, although yesterday I went in part knowing that particular vet would give me a break on costs. I was otherwise very frustrated. I talked to the other vet today, my more regular one, but he copped an attitude with me, was very snotty about my asking about Ondansetron, asking where I was pulling this stuff up from, "the Internet?" he said with a sneer I could actually hear. According to him, those are lay people, vets work with this stuff 24/7. Well, I told him a thing or two about exactly WHO it is paying for his million dollar house, fancy car and vacations. He ended up saying he could have Cerenia compounded into a liquid from the compounding pharmacy so I won't have to take Eleanor back out for a shot. I told him Cerenia is more for vomiting, I want something just for nausea. Oh oops. I wasn't supposed to say that.
I'm trying to get the money to take El to another vet tomorrow, what I SHOULD have done in the first place, this is a new one and I spent the last two years trying to find a new vet and I just feelso bad myself, was hoping to not have to do the new vet thing again. Just once maybe something could be simple.
Has anyone used Cerenia liquid? I would love to give her something tonight.
Any ideas on a good dosage for Bupranex? The dose is .1ml, I gave her 1/4 of that and she's been asleep all day.

Julie

I'm glad you have been so proactive with your vet. When they bring up that "lay person internet stuff" I think the line "is this about your ego or the cat" (especially if you don't care about burning bridges with THAT vet) is appropriate.

Oh he lives it 24/7 does he? And will he be there at 2 am when Eleanor's BG is low and you need help? He's not the first vet that I've heard of who had no clue what ondansetron was for. My vet, who I like very much, was not familiar with it OR with levemir but she trusts me so she just writes the scripts after she looks it up in her Merck.

So.....my Gussie weighs 9.5 lbs and gets .1ml of bupe bid. The dosing limit is quite liberal.....he could easily go up to .25ml bid. My bupe is .3mg/ml injectable although I squirt it on his gums. You can just check with the new vet on the dosing. That .1ml bid for Gus never makes him drowsy but it's ECID and Eleanor may be getting used to it or she just might not feel well.

Sending her healing vines!!

Yeah, the vets live it 24/7. They are at the clinic maybe 8 hours a day 4 days a week. I betcha they're 'living it" in their off time all right. I have not gotten so mad in a really long time.
Marje I'm taking El to Dr Tobin tomorrow, pray I can borrow the money!

Vyktor's original vet also sneered at the internet advice I was getting but his advice led to full blown DKA for Vyktor. I have been too mad to let him know everything that's happened yet but will get on to it soon so maybe he can learn a lesson (probably wishful thinking but I think I owe it to other cats in his care to try). Good on you for standing up for yourself and Eleanor.

Vyktor's current vet realised that I seemed to know what I was talking about and, although was getting a little nevous of Vyktor's low numbers sometimes he has concluded that the board knows what it is doing and he will just write the prescriptions and keep his nose out of Vyktor's diabetes.

Sorry I have no advice about the meds.

I would make sure that the Cerenia liquid does not have sugar in it. Many of the compounded liquids have a sugar syrup base. Somehow, those very "wise" (wiseass?) vets seem to forget to mention that the cat they're prescribing for is diabetic.

punkin had cerenia tabs - in my notes it says that some of the doses were 16mg and some were 8mg. i don't know how that compares with liquid dosing.

he has had bupe a few times and the dose has been .2ml per dose, given every 12 hours.

i'm so sorry eleanor is feeling yucky and you're having to deal with vet issues. i hope the new vet is more helpful.

Julie...I really hope you like him. One thing...I never used him for FD....so I don't know how much he knows about that but I always thought he was a great vet.

Julie, its so nice to hear you full of confidence against these *&$%* vets that think they can push us around. Thats why I loved about the new mobil vet I found. She pulled up in an old van, that looked like she painted it herself, window and all, and her bag full of papers falling out as she came into my house  I just knew then, that she was my kinda vet. Didn't care about money, charged so little to drive all the way to my house, and best of all, complimented my SS and FDMB!

GOOD LUCK WITH THE NEW VET, and I hope you can borrow the cash, if not, ask them if you can pay in installments, won't hurt to try. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I'm sorry you had difficulty with your vet but you have the courage to speak up. You could ask him to do you a favour and print out what Mercks (spelling) says about ondansetron. Cerenia can't hurt, but may not be enough. They are compatible so he could just add ondansetron.

Ego's seem to be a veterinary job requirement. I don't get it, honestly. I went through four vets and horrible anxiety, and finally found Maverick the perfect vet (long story). But I had to get a pep talk from my board friends to have the courage to communicate with vets due to my horrible first experience. You want a vet that you can be open and honest with, that will keep an open mind. Some vets are just bully's.
