The likelihood is that Checkers was in the blues, possibly even greens, last night. What you're seeing today is a bounce. It can take up to 72 hours for a bounce to clear -- hopefully, it will clear sooner rather than later.

Nothing different or unusual food=wsie or timing-wise. He's staying up in those high numbers though. This is no fun!

+6 is 439 and +9 is 447 ouch!

I just now recall reading that high numbers could reflect a uti perhaps? But that wouldn't match with my concern that I'm not seeing evidence that he's using his box. He's restricted to locations in the house so he doesn't use the rug, and we've made him a "handicapped" litter box, where one side is completely open so he can drag himself in and up till today he's been using that.

:? Ride it out?

When cats start going into lower numbers on insulin, the liver panics. It has reprogrammed itself to believe that high numbers are "normal," so when Checkabunny got lower numbers, the liver panicked and dumped some sugar and hormones into his system to raise the BG#s, causing a sudden "bounce." At first, the bounces take longer to clear, but the more the liver gets used to things (advances in "LTS" or "liver training school," as we call it around here), the less severe the dumps of sugar/hormones, the less high the bounce, and the less time for it to clear.

Like Sienne said, it can take up to 72 hours, so be patient... it's part of the process. :)

Thanks Christie! I'm a panicky newbie! I see I want it all better yesterday. I'm so grateful to everyone's help on this site!

Does Checkers feel worse (as in pain or lethargy) as his numbers shoot up in a bounce? (I feel pain for him when I watch him try to drag himself around, but he seems insistent on wanting to get around.) Or is he likely beginning to feel better as he's had the longer times of blues and possible green? And if I'm understanding this, I could see an "unexplained" spike again here or there as his diabetes is starting to get under control? And it takes time for the neuropathy to get better too? But not until the diabetes gets under better control?

Hang in there... believe me, I'm the queen of impatience, so I have to sometimes repeat out loud "marathon, not a sprint.... marathon, not a sprint..... marathon....."

I'm guessing that wild swings in BG #s aren't the most wonderful thing in the world for anyone... furry or otherwise! And at first, low numbers will feel weird as well. But Checkers will get used to things, and will start to feel better. Willie had other things going on when he was diagnosed, so he was pretty miserable. Once we got that fully under control and he got used to having lower numbers, his mood improved dramatically! He's 15, but now spends much of the day in spontaneous play (granted, followed up with lengthy naps... he's sleeping on my feet as I type!) and is just a happy, furry purry guy. His fur is now shiny and glossy and he has more energy than I could ever imagine him having, and this is just 3 months from diagnosis!

The important thing to remember is that Checkers is now on a solid path to better health, and that is because of you. You are doing a great job!!
