Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
After hitting green last night, Simon is up a little higher this morning. I think he must have had too much corned beef and cabbage last night celebrating his Irish roots. I guess I am just used to Simon kind of surfing along every day but the antibiotic seems to be jumping his numbers around some. At least I am hoping it is the antibiotic. Simon is happy this morning, eating all his breakfast, taking his pepcid and baytril in the pill pockets with no problems, and chasing a bug on the floor. One happy boy.

Meanwhile, Cleo, my civvie, seems to be feeling a little better. I am now giving her 3/4 of a pill of baytril instead of a whole one (suggested by the vet) and she didn't have any pukus last night and she cuddled with me all night. She even came downstairs to visit instead of just hiding upstairs all day. It is still a struggle getting her to take her pill, but I think she knows now that she will get a treat after so she isn't too bad.

Have a great Friday and thanks for all your support!

Re: 3/18 Simon AMPS 147

Yay glad to hear such a great report for Simon and Cleo.
Hope there are no post St. Patrick's Day hangovers at your place
Enjoy your Friday

Re: 3/18 Simon AMPS 147

Good morning guys! Choco and I wanted to stop by and say Happy Friday! Hope you all have a great day!!!

Re: 3/18 Simon AMPS 147

Sarah, I have never heard of a pill gun. Have you tried one before because sounds more successful than throwing the pill down her throat. I thought I was successful on the first try today and then found the pill on the floor 20 minutes later. I had to do it all over again!

Re: 3/18 Simon AMPS 147

Good morning guys ... even with the antibiotics this is a nice start to the day ... glad to hear simon enjoyed his corned beef last night  Glad to hear that cleo is feeling better too .. our civvie twix is a terrible cat to pill .. even the vet could not do it, even with the pill gun .. she foamed the pill back up whole! But when she was on antibiotics we did the pill pockets and she ate every single one .. it was a miracle ... hope you guys have a great day!

Darn!! Instead of going lower like he usually does at this time of the day, Simon went up. I really hope this isn't a trend.

Re: 3/18 Simon AMPS 147 +5.5 167

sienne posted technique and pics for someone (maybe anne & muffin) awhile back...
very detailed!

happy friday, btw!

Re: 3/18 Simon AMPS 147 +5.5 167

I was reading an article on dogs and baytril and a vet had responded about something about false blood glucose levels. I didn't think it would be relevant but I think I bookmarked it....

Urine dipsticks - possible false negatives and positives with baytril: http://diabetesindogs.wikia.com/wiki/False_Urine_Glucose_Testing_Results

Enrofloxacin (Baytril Rx) will react in some cases with sucralfate but in this instance the sucralfate interferes with absorption of the enrofloxacin and lowers the antibiotic's blood concentration. I have not heard of an interaction between enrofloxacin and blood glucose levels but this does occur with some antibiotics and falsely elevated levels appear in some instances when antibiotics are present in serum being tested for glucose. We have had difficulty with this problem in evaluation of diabetes when using cephalexin in diabetic pets.
http://www.vetinfo.com/dmederror.html

As with other quinolones, disturbances of blood glucose, including symptomatic hyper- and hypoglycemia, have been reported, usually in diabetic patients receiving concomitant treatment with an oral hypoglycemic (e. g., glyburide) or with insulin. In these patients, the monitoring of blood glucose is recommended.

Re: 3/18 Simon PMPS 171

Karrie, thank you for the information on dogs and baytril. Simon's bg seems to be going a little higher so maybe there is something to bg and baytril. My vet didn't seem to think so, but every cat is different, so you never know. Good thing I hometest! I'm going to not get too freaked out if the numbers keep going up and see what happens once he gets off the pills. Unfortunately, he has only been on the meds for almost 1 week so I have 2 more weeks to go.

I am going to petsmart tomorrow to look for a pill gun. Cleo is giving me fits. I thought I got the pill down her throat, but 5 minutes later, there it is on the floor.

Re: 3/18 Simon PMPS 171

Are you chasing the pill with tuna juice - something to make sure it goes fully down the throat? This is a must with pepcid and baytril.

Re: 3/18 Simon PMPS 171

Hi guys - another night where I a so late in visiting people. I am sorry Simon's numbers are higher - perhaps it is he AB's. Maybe it was all that corned beef and cabbage. I hope he come down for you tonight. It is great to read that Cleo is doing better. Sorry that she is so difficult to pill. It take it she doesn't like the pill pockets?

have a great night guys!

Simon has quite a bounce from his PMPS so I'm not sure what to think. Maybe it is in anticipation of the super full moon.

Cleo just doesn't seem as well tonight although she is eating about 1/2 of her normal amount of her food (about 4.5 oz.). I really think the baytril is not agreeing with her tummy although I am giving the pepcid. She is hiding under the bed right now and I know she doesn't trust me because I am the one giving her the pills. She doesn't like the pill pockets so I have had to throw the pills down her throat. I haven't chased it with tuna water or water -- how do I do that? With a syringe? I'm just a little frustrated with this whole situation and I'm worried about her. Meanwhile, Simon seems to be doing well with the baytril, although he is only getting 1/2 of the amount Cleo is getting.

I'm so exhausted so I am off to bed.

Georgia: I'm glad Simon is doing better and so happy to see him in green in his cycle again; I know you think his PSs are higher than you are used to but he's still looking good.

Wow...I've certainly got no other suggestions if the pill pocket won't work. I've never had any luck with pill guns and my cats but they are all really easy to pill. Poor Cleo....baytril is supposed to be easier on the tummy than the other ABs. You are feeding her before you give it right so she's not getting the AB on an empty tummy?

Hope you get some rest!
