3/18 Shakes-sterile cystitus

I probably spelld that wrong but that is what he has
Now...Years ago he would always get blood in his urine and I took him to the vet
the vet would give him antiboitics and he would be better in 5 days...
Happened for about 2 or 3 years and always between April and October...
anyway after a few years I decided to switch vets to hopefully get some new answers
SOO...on to new vet who said that shakes was pre diabetic (sugar 126)
and put him on a special diet *(High carb), that GAVE hime diabetees(yes all before I found this site
I digress...,so after the diabetes he hasnt had this until now...BUT
this is the first time that he is actually starting to act not good
It started yesterday, he goes to the box in and out, and nothing
or he yesterday he kept going in and peeing just a little, which he NEVER does.
Today I dont think he feels well...peeing small amounts,,the vet said that it will clear up on its own
but I dont know as this is the first time I guess he is getting worse.
I am going to give tuna water with a little dasuquin as stated on the internet...
anyone else have any ideas? :cry:

I really don’t know anything about cystitis either unfortunately.

Do you add water to his food? Just wondering if that might be helpful long term.
We have done that with my Mom’s cat and Asher since they both had urinary tract issues years back. A vet recommended it to us since both cats were not good water drinkers.
 
My civvie Paulo seemed to do very well on the Royal Canin urinary canned food... he was on it for several months. I've just tried switching him to FF - and he seems to be doing well with it. Janet & Binky's list showed it at 3% carbs (if I remember correctly), but it made Grayson's BG numbers go right up... so I wasn't completely convinced. He sure liked it, though! It was about $1.25 per can (same size as FF), and available only at the vet's office. May be worth a try?
 
Sorry Shakes is not feeling well! I think there is some info on Dr Lisa's site. I think I remember it's painful so they need pain meds but not antibiotic.

What causes sterile cystitis? Did the vet explain? Would this make him more prone to getting crystals in his urine?
I sure hope he will get some relief from the pain soon.
Tuna and extra water in his food should help him go more often. I know from having kidney/bladder reflux all my childhood when it hurts to go that bad, you'll try to hold it as long as you can. I used to take an anti-spasmodic for the bladder that helped with that. I don't know if cats can take anything like that or not.

So sorry to hear about shakes! I will pray that he gets better very soon and the vet's know the right med's to prescribe, etc. Hang in there! You are doing a great job in caring for SHakes and he knows that too!

I was reading a lot yesterday and driving myself crazy trying to figure this out
Well....this is what I came up with
Before his diabetes he just to get this all the time...every couple of weeks
he was on anti biotics...etc for years!
When he got the diabetes it stopped....BUT WHY!!
ok here is what I am thinking from the reading I did yesterday...
DRY FOOD!
The last week or so when Shakes dropped very fast I had given him say 10 pieces of
dry food in hopes that he didnt bounce so much and because I know how much he loves it
In putting the pieces together I think it makes sence since he hasnt had the dry food since the diabetes
and he did get dry food a few times in the last 2 weeks...SO
NO MORE DRY!! (It was EVO dry but he must be so sensitive to it!)
 
I’m glad you got that figured out Denise. Makes sense. Did you have to get pain meds for him?
 
No , my vet just said that it will go away on its own.
Last night (2x) I gave him tuna water with the dasuquin
He seems to feel better today so I will do the same thing tonight

Very sorry to hear about Shakes but glad that it seems that he is feeling better. I'm shaking my head over here about reading that you think the dry food could be the cause behind it. I tell you this, I will NEVER give an animal dry food ever again. I really can't see how these manufacturers sleep at night.

Hope Shakes gets better, real soon.
 
I know a lot of people poo poo the internet, but I have learned soooo much about how to treat my family from reading online. And, my doctor is always open to being filled in on what I've learned - wish Hershey had a doctor like that. :YMSIGH:

Hope the dry is the cause and that Shakes feel all better uber soon!! You're such a good mommy and Shakes is one lucky kitty to have you :smile:

Glad to see shakes getting better. Hate the dry food too! My other kitty(non-diabetic) used to always crave water. He would even jump in the tub with us to get the water. When copper got Dx w/FD i switched both to canned ff and he doesn't go near water anymore. It definelty was the dry food. I don't know why the vet's do not say anything to people. When i try to tell others about it that have cats, they always say, well our cat has done fine on it his life so far, why change. I guess some kitties are just more sensitive to it than others. Both my mom's cats lived to be 21 yrs old and were on dry food there whole lives. Lucky!!

Look forward to hearing more about shakes improvement.
