Good morning!! ~O)

I woke up to a high number this AM, but I think Sasha ate during the night. Didnt want to take his food away last night, because of the ketones. He ate his normal food and his BG dropped 200 points in 3 hours.

I was able to get a test with a ketostix, he is testing negative to trace.

I gave him fluids last night, only .75 mls but it doesnt look like he's absorbed them all. He's still thirsty though, drinking a lot of water.

I'm not sure if I should continue with yesterdays plan and the R today... yesterday to get him to eat a lot, I had to put a couple of tablespoons of HC fancy feast in his regular food?

Ok I'll check in in a little bit!!! coffee time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: AMPS 518 +3 310

That's a good sized drop by +3. Not having used R, I don't want to advise. I do suspect you could have given R at AMPS. At this point, if you're going to use it, it would be after nadir.

Perhaps you can work out a set of guidelines for using R with Libby, Sandy, or Dyana. This is the strategy that is used with the acro cats.

You might want to add Sasha's name to your subject line!

just on my first cup

Ii just looked at your ss - you have 418 as AMPS - ??? (please add date to condo header)
Did you shoot 3.25 or 3.5 lantus this morning?
(please change PM+7 and +8 to yellow)

How much food did Sasha eat yesterday?
How is he behaving?

Re: 3/18 Sasha AMPS 518 +3 310

Sienne, thats actually a great idea. I wasnt sure what to do with him this morning.

Sandy  !!! whoaaaa.... I just changed everything.. I definitely need to drink my coffee first before I get on here..geez.

He's acting okay, pretty curious and starting fights with Ruby... but he only ate about an ounce of Wellness, every time I go into the kitchen he follows me to see if I'm going to add any HC food to his dish, and when I dont, he snubs it....sighh.....

Yesterday because I was adding the HC food, he ate about 15 oz.

Re: 3/18 Sasha AMPS 518 +3 310

If you have to, use the 3/4 LC 1/4 HC mix. He needs the calories, so if a little HC mixed in gets him to chow down add it.
Use just enough HC to get him to eat -- you want him to get the most calories without raising the carb % too much.

I've forgotten - what was his ideal weight, before he got sick?

If he is still pink at +6 today, give him .25u R.

We'll put together an "R scale" for you - some guidelines around what to do and when.

Re: 3/18 Sasha AMPS 518 +3 310

Hi Sandy, thanks!

He was 10 lbs 10 oz at the vet's last week. He should be about 14 pounds. He looks so skinny.

I just took his +6 he's at 256. I mixed a tablespoon of high carb ff into his wellness. He chowed down. Now he's probabluy up in the 300's...that highcarb food is no joke. Just a little makes him sky rocket.

I also took a test with the meter just now, his ketones are at 1.9... these ketones are crazy...

Re: 3/18 Sasha AMPS 518 +3 310 +6 256 L+7/R+1 267 L+8/R+2 25

Hope the ketones come down today!!! Good job on the "R".

Sending hugs!

Re: 3/18 Sasha PMPS 327

I read that you might be given an "R chart" If so can you share it with me if applicable? if that is OK? Or is it just geared for Sasha? Because if ketones increase for Sid, I'm going to be in panic mode and I don't want to overreact so a chart would be nice. Let me know :-D :-D :-D

I hope that you and Sasha are doing well today. I read you had a 1.9 today on the meter - that isn't horrible. Not the best but actually Sid's highest reading was a 3.1 a week or so ago so I think you still have Sasha under control and are doing a great job. (I said before 2.9 but I was wrong - sorry  )

Re: 3/18 Sasha PMPS 327

Thank you so much Sandy! It will be great to have that. Still battling these stupid ketones...he's a 1.4 now. But outwardly there's no sign of anything. When he's not lounging, he's eating like a horse as long as there's some HC food mixed in  ...his tastebuds get spoiled quick...

Lydia, I will absolutely share it with you but I want to find out if it is specifically being put together based on how Sasha responds to the R. I am so glad Sid's ketones are low, that's awesome news!!!!

Its really scary the way these ketones creep up... but keeping his BG low and loading him with calories and giving him SubQ's really seem to blast the little suckers away. What scares methe most is when I'm at work and I cant check him. I am wondering if Sasha is going to be prone to ketones now that he had DKA. I really hope not!

:YMHUG: to you and Sid!

Hi there

He has some work ahead of him in the eating dept.

About R scales -
An R scale is guide you develop, based on data you collect on your cat's response to R.
Use it as a fall back, for times when those with R experience may not be available to help.
It is unique and specific to your cat. No one should ever follow another cat's R dosing.
If a cat is using R, it's due to something out of the ordinary. In Sasha's case it's the ketone situation.
In our case it was ketones as well as IAA.

Along with being highly individual, an R scale it not static and can quickly become obsolete. As Sasha's response to insulin (both lantus and R) changes, so must the scale.
There may be times when what was appropriate 2 days ago may not be appropriate today.

Based on where Sasha is right now and his responses so far, you may want to start with something like this:

Remember, no R at AM/PM shot time if you gave it late in the previous cycle

Some of BKs R scales on the second tab of his ss. They changed often. (the dose was high due to his condition of extreme insulin resistance from Insulin Auto Antibodies.)

Always use caution with R. If you notice a particular dose having more punch that it previously did, that's a signal to cut back.
Monitor closely and keep good track of responses.
