Hi all,

Crystal had another good start to the morning, then a slight increase and back to blue for +10. I think she is feeling much better today, eating better (she knows I will break out the tuna if all else fails) but mixing everything with olive oil to keep things moving. Other than that, a quiet day (for her, I had a rush of oxygen to the brain and decided to do a bit of spring cleaning like a mad March hare!)

They do know they can test our nerves and force us to break out the tuna, don't they? Mine likes to hold out and stare longingly in the direction of the cabinet where I keep the temptation tools like tuna and treats. It's a battle of wills. :joyful:
 
Crystal, you're looking so pretty in these blues!!

Cobb used to just bat at any kind of plastic bag because he knew treats came out of a plastic bag...to the point where we had to make sure everything was put inside a drawer or closet before we went to bed...every night. Crazy cats!

I just saw that she was having some constipation problems the other day- pooping outside the box, and vomiting are definitely signs of constipation. And the diarrhea can occur if there is a stuck hard stool blocking the way. I am wondering if you have tried increasing the Miralax substitute--most people start with 1/8 teaspoon once a day, but it is a dose to effect, you should ask your vet, but it can be increased as needed. My vet has said to mix it with water, not adding it to food, but you again want to ask your own vet.

You were asking about mineral oil, this is what I found on Tanya's website:
"Mineral oil (liquid paraffin) should not be used, because since it has no smell or taste, it can easily be aspirated and cause pneumonia. If given regularly, it may also interfere with the absorption of nutrients."

Likewise, olive oil isn't ideal either, not for long term use. This is from Feline Constipation.org:
  • Olive oil – Technically a cholagogue (see Glossary), not a lubricant laxative, olive oil has mild laxative properties when a larger dose is given. A larger dose for a cat is a small amount! For a mild bout of constipation, a quarter teaspoonful of olive oil can be given for acute treatment but cats require animal fat sources, not plant oils, so olive oil is not suitable for ongoing care. Olive oil contains terpenic acids and phenolic compounds which a cat's liver is not able to properly detoxify. Some pharmacies carry small bottles of pharmaceutical-grade olive oil. Do not force any oil into the mouth of a cat.
 
Hi Ruth, yes I read about the olive oil on the Feline Constipation site, I am hoping to get some bio coconut oil on Friday. I also noticed about mineral oil not being a good thing to give cats, funny, my vet said to give it a go - but I wont be doing so. Crystal seems to be eating normally now, I'm adding plenty of water to her raw mix but thanks for the recommendation about increasing the Miralax substitute and I will try mixing it with water, rather than sprinkling it on the food. We live and learn a lot from other people who have had similar problems.

Thanks Patricia and Suzanne for looking in, she is doing well on this dose so far and holding steady. They soon get to know where the goodies are stashed, don't they.
 
I mix the miralax in a spoonful of all meat baby food as a treat after Max's amps. He gets 1/8t once a day but if he nees it I add another at night.
 
AMPS 167 good start for Crystal again, yes blue suits her so much better than pink, now if she could just edge down a tad that would be wonderful.
