It's a melancholy day here...today would have been my sweet handsome GA Mario's 19th birthday. Happy Birthday to my angel!
Not loving that AMPS, but I'm glad she didn't food spike it like crazy. Trix is loving, loving, loving her Paw Lickin', so I guess once we find the right dose, it will be worth it. Back in the Wellness FortiFlora days, she was always the first to walk away from her bowl...she so didn't like it. But, with this new menu, she is always the last one eating and doesn't even glance at the kibbles. When she leaves, she's usually 95% done...I scoop up what's left and pile it in the middle of the bowl, serve it to her in front of the heating vent, and we have our CPC.
Last night's fluids session was not super-duper smooth. She was being fidgety...I guess I didn't hit a great spot with the needle and her skin was being extra twitchy as the juice was going in. Finally, she could take it no more and she rolled...and the needle came out ohmygod_smile . Ugh. The worst part, was we were only half way through, so I had to stick her again. I did find a better spot the second time, though...she didn't flinch and just purred.
I was thinking today how she's so oddly sensitive to foods that are supposed to be LC. She was the same way with Wellness. When she was first diagnosed, I tried all sorts of LC fuds to see what she would like (note: she was actually eating Wellness when she was diagnosed!). If I fed her other foods, her numbers went down and were stable; when I fed her Wellness, they were all over the map. I finally settled on Fancy Feast and Purina One, and she was always roughly a 1.25U kitty, nice and flat low blue/high green.
But then last year, her kidney numbers were just a hair out of range, so it was time to search for a LC/LoPhos fuds. She hated EVO (even more than Wellness, if that's possible!) and Merrick's BG (which doesn't exist anymore anyway). She loved Paw Lickin', but it sent her BGs through the roof - we ended up at 5.00U before I finally took it off the menu. I finally re-settled on Wellness and while her numbers eventually settled down, it did require quite a bit more juice to keep her in those low blues/high greens...she was needing around 3.50U to stay there, although she eventually worked herself down to about 2.75. Still so much more than she required with the Fancy Feast options.
I don't know...but this numbers trend is pretty much a carbon copy of what we went through last year when we switched around her fuds. She must have a very finicky pancreas.
I also have this fear that Wellness is causing whatever is going on with her kidney values. My vet did see a larger trend of cats with urinary issues who were eating Wellness (all kinds...wet and dry), and when she tried to contact the company about any changes they have made in the food they refused to talk to her. And, she was already eating it when she developed FD. I have never ever been a fan of that company. While Trix doesn't outwardly display any urinary issues at all, I do wonder...and I know the vet is considering kidney stones as one of the possibilities here.
So, I really want the Paw Lickin to work for so many reasons. I just wish I knew NOW what the right dose was to get her back to better numbers.
Anyway, she is her usual radiant self this morning.
And, everything is white again. Fortunately, it is just a dusting, but at this point, even that is way too much snow.
I'm off today...hanging with the kitties and doing chores (if you check in Kim...yep....still spackling sheetrock in the basement! Having to work is really slowing that project down!)
Sending prayers out to Dyana's sister, and to Jennifer and Cain.
Have a great day, LL!
