Super busy morning took Fritz to his holistic vet pat. They took BW and prescribed Levothyroxine 0.1mg.
Fritz is sleeping and enjoying being back home.

He has been busy working the juice. Down from 9u to 8u now I read that the Levothyroxine can make you have to increase the insulin. I will wait and see.

Karen tons of hugs to you! That Doodle bug was a very special fur baby......

They think he is hypothyroid? That is really rare in cats unless they have received I131 treatment and it caused the hypothyroidism. I'm surprised they got a thyroid function test back the same day. Did they do a TSH as well as T4?

I mean, if he is hypothyroid, it could explain his weight.

No the BW isn't in till Monday but wont hear from them till Tuesday. I was nervous to put him on it without the BW. I sure hope she ordered the TSH. I checked the bill and it only said T4.
I read it is really rare too.

Marje would appreciate your thoughts on this.

You are smart to wait for labs. Sometimes when cats have other things going on, their thyroid levels might be really low. We call this euthyroid sick syndrome. His asthma treatments might be affecting his thyroid levels. Here is an opinion from Dr. Mark Peterson who is a leading feline endocrinologist.

Other conclusions from Dr. Peterson's studies:
So which cats should be treated with thyroid hormone therapy? Peterson suggests that cats that have supportive clinical signs—lethargy and weight gain—and low T4 or high TSH concentrations should be treated. Cats that have no clinical signs but have supportive laboratory test results and azotemia should also be treated.

Neko got euthyroid sick syndrome a couple of times. We got a full thryoid panel done to figure it out. Cats who have had SRT (stereotactic radiation therapy) like Neko did, can also go hypothyroid, so it was a possible diagnosis when we saw the low total and free T4 numbers. Fortunately her numbers were normal in subsequent b/w and full thyroid panel. Blood for full thyroid panels is usually sent to Hemopet, Antech or MSU. Idexx doesn't do all of the values.

Good luck with the b/w results for blue Fritz.
