Frustrated! Dakota my male fur son was diagnosed with Diabetes in Sept 2020. He is only 12 pounds and at his heaviest, was just barely 13. We have not been able to get his Blood sugar level. Started with ProZinc; at 2 units and was up to 8 units 2X daily. Curves with ProZinc were between 400-500. Switched insulin (at my request because maybe he doesn't respond to ProZinc) to Lantus. The numbers above are on Lantus at 7 units 2X daily. Moving to 9 units tomorrow per vet. He is always hungry (camps out at his water and food dish all day long) and of course just drink a lot and uses the box a lot. Has anyone dealt with this? Do I just need to be more patient?

Hi! Welcome :bighug: If you have any glucose data (from Prozinc and/or lantus), can you get a spreadsheet setup? Viewing the spreadsheet is pretty much the only viewpoint others have into how the insulin is working and how your kitty is responding. Instructions for the spreadsheet can be found in the How you can help us help you (link). Are you home testing by chance?

FWIW, most of those on this board take increases/decreases above 5 units at 0.5 unit intervals (i.e., increase from 5u to 5.5u)...I think at 10 units, increases are by 1 unit intervals. I haven't been around as long as some people but I have not heard of people moving up 2 units at a time. (as an aside, on less than 5 units, we take increases/decrease at 0.25u or 0.5u depending on the data).

Hope that helps a bit - perhaps @Wendy&Neko or @tiffmaxee can stop by too.

I've moved your post to Feline Health, where we ask first time posters to go first. The folks here can get you set up with a spreadsheet and help you with tips on how to testing if you need, or with food.

What food are you feeding now? Low carb wet or raw food is best for diabetics. You kitty is on quite a high dose if feeding just low carb food. I would NOT increase by 2 units at once, that is too much. At that size dose we would only increase by 0.5 units, if the blood sugar numbers told us it's the right thing to do. If you can get the spreadsheet set up, we can help you with dosing.

Is Dakota still losing weight?

The helping you link that Suzanne posted has instructions on setting up the spreadsheet. If you need help, let us know, we have people who can help with that.
