I think was my last condo... http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/10-14-bubby-ambg-106-pm-3-82.126975/#post-1310928

Hi everyone. I'm sorry to have been a stranger again, I do stop in now and then to check up on everyone though, even if I don't post. I feel kind of terrible for posting with a question, but I know that someone here will know off the top of their head. My question is, I remember seeing some info about Cerenia being used for more than just nausea.... Like for inflammation in cats with IBD. My vet is reluctant to try Cerenia for more than a couple of days, as he said it can have some damaging effects on the liver, and that it also hasn't been proven to have enough of an impact on inflammation. I was hoping that someone might have a link to studies that I can share with our vet.

An update on Bubby.... Once we stopped the prednisolone (he did not vomit much on the pred but it increased his BG) and switched to novelty protein foods his BG came down drastically and has remained in the 70 - 90 range. He does still have IBD issues though, frequent vomiting. We have tried everything, and I just recently switched foods again this time to Ziwipeak Venison. I Had been feeding Wellness Core Beef Venison and Lamb, but now question whether he might have an allergy to chicken (there is chicken meal in it), or maybe some other ingredient, I don't know. The vet is kind of out of ideas, the IM specialist suggested Budesonide (but I'm afraid of the diabetes risk) or Leukeran, not a great choice either as far as I'm concerned. I'm wondering about trying Slippery Elm Bark first. The vet hadn't heard of it and wanted to do some research first. I'm so happy to have a vet that will listen and is willing to try new things.

Other than the vomiting, Bubby is doing great, he is such a lovebug. His last ultrasound showed great improvement in decreased inflammation, most likely due to the steroid that he was taking. His BW was great, his EOS which had been off the charts was on the high end of normal so that was great. His platelet count was on the higher side but the vet wasn't overly concerned. If we could just get the vomiting under control we'd be very happy.

My other kitty, Missy, is doing great, she has come such a long way since I adopted them. she was very skittish and would hide at every chance she could. She now demands attention, loves her toys, and has the loudest purr. She does still run if someone makes any sudden movements or walks too fast in her direction. But, she came out to greet a new friend recently, and as long as she can make the first contact, she is happy.

Thanks in advance for stopping by and if you have any info that I can share with my vet. I will keep looking as well. Thanks so much!

Hugs,
Kathie, Bubby and Missy

I think the info on Cerenia that your vet has is slightly out of date. The latest seems to be that cats can take it for longer than previously thought. The "old" recommendation seemed to be to give 4 days on Cerenia, then have a break for a few days before continuing with more. That doesn't seem to be the current thought, however, I can't provide you with documentation. My vet did give punkin Cerenia for longer periods of time - say a week at a time when he needed it.

I checked with Dr. Google and found this link on pancreatitis, but the part i thought you might find interesting is this quote under the anti-nausea treatment for pancreatitis:
Cerenia (maropitant). This is a newer drug, but has quickly become our first line of defense for nausea in cats. This drug not only reduces nausea and vomiting, but it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-pain properties.

I'll tag @tiffmaxee and hopefully she'll see this. Elise knows a ton about the topic. I'm not getting notified of tags, so if she doesn't show up, you might look for Max's condo and post a question to her.

One good website that I've recently become aware of has some good info on diet and IBD: www.catnutrition.org Take a look at the tabs there and under "diseases" she has some about IBD. Maybe there will be something there that's helpful.

I'm glad Bubby is doing pretty well overall and Missy is doing great. I hope you can find something to help Bubby's vomiting. I've seen other people talk about Slippery Elm, but I'm not sure about how to give it.

Thank you Julie and Carla. I found another website too written by a vet, and that had a link to a round table discussion at a veterinarian info network. I've sent it off to my vet to look at, as well as the info on slippery elm bark from Tanya's site.

Thanks again!

the IM specialist suggested Budesonide
My Skooter actually was switched TO the budesonide from the pred when he was dx'd last April. He has done fantastic on it and his numbers are doing great (with the exception of a few hiccups for reasons other than diabetes or IBD related).

I do a compounded version that I get from Wedgewood Pharmacy, as Skooter is darn near impossible to pill. I have links to his 2014 and 2015 spreadsheets and as you can see, the budesonide has not really changed his BG numbers at all. He actually has a lot less flare ups on the budesonide than he did the pred.

This link has some information on Cerenia and how it inhibits Substance P which is involved in several inflammatory processes. the author notes that there's research going on investigating it's use in IBD.
