3/16 Sunny AMBG 150 - passed out from hairball

I was lying in bed and heard Sunny vomiting -- and then heard a thud. He had vomited up a hairball and passed out. I ran over to him and roused him - and he grumbled a little and woke up. I carried him upstairs and he was purring like a motor boat. took his BG which was 150. I fed him and now I'm watching him - he's walking around the house - and seems a little slow like he's still groggy.

He had a vet visit Friday and the vet said everything looked good -- but we are still waiting on bloodwork which I should get this week.

I did have another cat in the past who fainted from vomiting and she was alright - had her checked out by the vet at the time and they couldn't find anything wrong. they said it can happen just from hard vomiting, which makes sense.

I'm going to watch Sunny closely today. I'd like to avoid the emergency vet $$$ if we can since it's Sunday. :nailbiting:

He's acting much more like himself now an hour later. He's purring and used his scratcher and asked for more food, and he's up on his cat tower watching for birds. Hopefully this fainting event was just totally from the hairball and not anything more serious.
Oh, my, I’ve never heard of something like that. I hope Sunny is OK. Sending prayers and hugs your way:bighug::bighug::bighug:

OMG, that would have been terrifying! I hope it was just one of those things.

I'm sure you've likely read some about this. I, of course, had to go to Dr. Google who says that this can happen as a result of vagal nerve stimulation. I'm so sorry for Sunny, but glad you posted so that we can be aware that it can happen occasionally (in case I ever see it in my five cats). Will you discuss it with the vet?
Thank you for looking that up! I am going to bring it to the vet when she gets back. She's on vacation all this next week.

Sunny seems his normal self today so I'm hoping that this was just a one time event. It better not happen again! I almost had a heart attack. Now I have to find him some sugar free hairball treatment.

Exactly, it's from straining which restricts oxygen and blood flow to the brain, so the body tries to save itself by getting you on the ground to increase blood flow.

Never heard of this happening to a cat, how scary! :bighug:

:eek::eek:

Do you give any kind of hairball remedy? Maybe something to look into to prevent another episode. Egg yolk powder won't affect bgs. A lot of the commercial gels and treats contain sugar. Vetbasis was super popular on FDMB long ago since it was diabetic-friendly but it has been discontinued.

I don't have any low carb hairball stuff currently but I gave Sunny some pumpkin today and I have coconut oil, and I could get plain old Vaseline and use that. We tried the egg yolk powder in the past but it gave him terrible diarrhea. I also ordered this today: https://a.co/d/ieXwjwW
