He was down to 119 at +4, he went out to play on the first nice warm day and had a blast, the garage is set up like a ferrety disneyland and they have a blast running through tubes and digging in several dig boxes, then we all went out in the stroller to soak up some much needed rays and smell the scents of springtime. I bet he sleeps through his next feeding time, he was one tired little camper.

Hi! I've never met a ferret. Are they nice? Do they bite? I've seen you posting here and I think it's great. I can't believe he lets you poke him too. Are their ears much smaller than cats? I met someone who is seeing a guy with a ferret who has heart failure and this guy is very devoted to his ferret. I told this girl about you caring for a diabetic. She was concerned that he might be "weird" for caring so much about his ferret and I said - if he loves and cares for his ferret this much, then he will probably be a good boyfriend too! ;-)

Awwwwwww he sounds like a good ferrent (ferret parent) and yes they make wonderful companions, mine have never bitten and are gentle and loving. Of course like any pet it would depend on the love and care they receive as to how they act and I am sure there are some who bite the same as any cat or dog or pet.
We have 6 and they are all gentle and good.
We test Pippin on his tail tip not his ear, their ears are very sensitive and small, he is very good about the testing and shots and has become used to all the poking during the past year although he never did make a fuss even in the beginning. I also test my other ferrets periodically and they dont even know I did it so there you go!
I send good thoughts to your friends little baby, I hope he is with him a long long time.

What a wonderful day for Pippin! Loved your post from this morning! And his bgs are sure looking good lately - hope it continues...

Wow - I bet testing on the tail tip is much eadier than the ear. Are a ferrets' number range the same as a cat? I'm impressed that you were able to diagnose and treat him! Do they use litter boxes too? Were his symptoms similar to what happens to cats?

Great WFR! Hearing about the ferret disneyland brought a much needed smile to my face! So happy to see his good numbers, too.

Ferrets ideal BG would be 90-110 a little higher than a kitty, its very rare for a ferret to get diabetes they usually suffer from the opposite, insulinoma where the pancreas has tumors producing too much insulin and they go hypo very easily so Pippin and I have learned together how to treat him as the vets basically gave a poor prognosis and didnt really know how to treat them.
Yes his symptoms were the same as a kitty diabetic, I should have caught it earlier but I was watching for too low BG not too high, a mistake I wont make again.
They use litter boxes, their digestive system is short and they have to go every 2 hours or so, so with 6 the litter boxes see a lot of action, I have to go check and clean them maybe once every hour to 1-1/2 hours. In fact his peeing on the floor was so unusual that is the first symptom we noticed when he became diabetic. I have also trained them all to accept puppy pee pee pads so when we go out or to the vet I just put down a pad and they use it, its very convenient!

OMG...Pippin is too cute!! Where have I been that I didn't know we had a special ferret member here?! One of my best friends has a ferret & "Peanut" is the cutest little snuggler I've ever seen.

How great that you've learned to care for your little guy when there is little known support for a ferret's diabetic condition.
FDMB also = Ferret Diabetes Message Board. Gotta love it. I'll be watching out for you guys in the future!
