Good Morning, LL! Looks like we are in a bounce, or an HC recovery, or both...yesterday: Chyna 3/14

Chyna seems to be feeling off the past few days  . Her fur is a little greasy looking and she's shedding lots. Her appy isn't quite as good as usual, but she will eat some. She'd getting some spoon feedings too. I was hoping that the poop last night would help, and she did eat all overnight fuds. Maybe I'm just a big worry wart just because she isn't eating on my time schedule...she's still purring, preening, and peeing. She just seems "off". Maybe residual vetty annoyance?

Subqs last night were again an epic fail. I tried RR on her ears about half an hour before and sprinkled some drops of it on the towel she sat on. I just don't know why suddenly the minute I put her there for fluids she starts whining and meowing, before I even put the needle in. Then proceeds to try get away the whole time. It didn't help that the drip was slow and no matter what I did I couldn't adjust it to fast. It's not like we had a bad poke or anything before this started a few days ago. It's the same spot we do her ear testing and insulin shots, which she mostly purrs through or at least sits good :YMSIGH: . So I guess tonight I will try a different location? We used to do her shots on the counter in the kitchen but I have to find a place I can hang the bag, I don't have an IV pole and can't buy one at the moment. If that doesn't work I guess I will go buy some Feliway even though I don't have the cash! Maybe I will have to buy the EZ harness I saw online!

I can't tell if the NV duck is making her scratch or not, I was wondering if it was the RR since I tried both at the same time and it seemed to be right after I used it on her ears and it is scented...I will discontinue the RR anyways, for now, and keep adding some of the duck. I've increased her ALOH and will be mixing into her frozen fuds before freezing too so hopefully that will help her phos levels, and I'm taking some raw to put into a container in the fridge to add to the fuds to get her used to it again.

Sorry for the long condo again! I hope you all have a good Caturday

Re: 3/15 Chyna AMPS 188 +3 201

I'm sorry Chyna isn't feeling 100%....maybe she picked up a bug at the vetty? That happened to Trix...a day or so after her last visit, she was snuffling a day or two later. I sure hope she feels like herself quickly. Eat your fuds, Chyna!!

I wish I had suggestions for the fluids....I just don't have enough experience with them yet. But, I do know what you mean about the slow drip. We were initially using an 18g needle and now we're using 21g. I have to admit, the 18g was like a harpoon, but the fluilds flowed so much more quickly than with teh 21g. Even though Trix is pretty cooperative, she does get a little antsy with the slower drip, so I think I'm going to switch back to the 18g when we get needles the next time.

Sending calming fluid vines your way....

Re: 3/15 Chyna AMPS 188 +3 201

Thanks Amy :-D . I have the Terumo UTW 21g but use the 20g and it usually flows pretty well...I'm scared to switch when it will take a bit longer. I have tried adjusting the needle while flowing like Marje suggests if it's dripping slow and sometimes it works but others squirmy Chyna will not allow for less than both hands on the cat! I wish I had a second person do to this with at times like that :? . I'm wondering if the admin sets are different too for this, as I have a few different kinds and the one I'm using is a "cheap" one...and maybe it's just the angle or the way she is sitting or the spot I've poked. She doesn't have a lot of loose fur to make tents  . Sorry to babble on

Chyna just ate some fuds, and purred for me while I petted her. I hope that she keeps it up :-D

Re: 3/15 Chyna AMPS 188 +3 201

Hi Rachel,
You might try one of those large brackets that fit over the top of a door (for hanging clothes on, etc.). You could hang the fluids bag on that, and since you can have the door at any degree of opening, you could probably find a good position for the bag.
I hope Chyna will be feeling better as the day progresses. Sending vines!

Have a good weekend,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 3/15 Chyna AMPS 188 +3 201

Another thing, too....are you inserting the needle with the bevel facing up? I know that helps with the flow, too. I have to admit, I'm not comfortable enough yet to mess with the needle while the fuilds are flowing, even when it's dripping more slowly than I care for. Trix's fur/skin is pretty tight, too...I swear I spend more time trying to get a good tent than it takes for the fluids to go in. Last night, she was getting pretty annoyed with me while I was trying to find the perfect tent.

Re: 3/15 Chyna AMPS 188 +3 201

Thanks Ella, that's what I am using now :-D. The only other place there is a door at a good vantage point is the bathroom and that counter may be too low to stand and too high to kneel and get a good grip  . I have a couple of those jacket hanging things that can be drilled into the wall...if I can decide on a good spot that doesn't look too weird  . I wonder if the curtain rods would take a 1000ml bag of fluids for weight...I think curtains crashing down may make the fluids time even worse for scardy grumpy cat :o . Thanks for the vines, I really appreciate them!

Hi again Amy! Yes, bevel up and bag as high as I can get it for a good drop  . I'm glad I'm not the only one annoying the cat trying to get a tent ohmygod_smile

We'll figure out something! ;-) I keep trying to find a cheap IV stand but other things need to be bought more, like syringes and insulin...I do have a carpenter for a dad and may have to pick his brain, even though he finds all this silly...I'm not even sure if a location change will help. But we'll try

I'm glad you're getting some purrs out of Chyna today. I hope you can find a good spot to give the fluids and a good way to hang the bag. Nice slide to green today.

Re: 3/15 Chyna AMPS 188 +3 201 +6 97

If that was a bounce, she didn't waste any time clearing it. I'd guess it had more to do with the HC fuds.

Sorry Chyna is still not cooperating for the fluids. I wish I had some advice, but I have been having the same problem with Cinco. Does music calm her? Maybe play some soft music? Just fishing in the dark here....

I use a clothes hanger and one of those long metal bars that you can hook over the door to hang clothes on. The tubes are just long enough to reach the counter, so I really have to keep Cinco still.

Sending calming vines for your next fluids session, for both of you! ;-) And feel better vines for Chyna, too. Enjoy the rest of your Caturday!

I'm so sorry that Chyna isn't her usual self, but it's great that you saw some greens today. Unfortunately, I can't help you with subqs. I can, however, send out lots of healing vines. They're on their way.

Hang in there!
Shelly

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

Well, I'm not sure where the yellow is from but what can you do? I hope she didn't keep going down...I was planning on another poke this afternoon but mom stopped in and then I fell asleep  . Then I did fluids at AM+10. Chyna seems to be a bit happier tonight, and we have lots of poo  .

Thanks Carla, Tricia, and Shelly, for visiting and for all the vines :-D . Fluids went better today, but we did them in the kitchen on the counter so she was surprised and only let out a few grunting mews and pouted a bit after. We'll see if it continues to work...it did flow slower again too, and I couldn't get the bag very high for a drop. I'll have to rig something higher, or check around for cheap IV poles...where would you buy those? I've seen them online but they cost an arm and a leg to ship here  . I wonder if the vet would sell me one for cheap...haha, something cheap from the vet

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

Hi, Rachel, I'm glad to hear that today's fluids were easier and that she's feeling good tonight :thumbup
I'm not sure if you've tried this or are doing this already, but with Ripley it was easy to distract her with food and/or treats while administering the fluids. Sometimes I gave her a little bowl of watered-down baby food (she thought that was really special), and as she slurped I administered the fluids. If I had to turn or adjust the needle, I waited until she was mid-bite to avoid her getting annoyed, or added freeze-dried treats to her little bowl. This was especially helpful when it was just me or my husband doing the fluids solo.
I wonder if your vet will let you borrow or rent an IV pole... we used a sturdy nail in our wall above Ripley's rocking chair/fluids station. It's still there.

You are doing such a great job with Chyna ♥

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

Awww thanks Josie :-D . She does get treats during of all her flavors...sometimes she will eat them, others she is too upset  . I tried food and she looked at me like really? I don't think so. I've put her catnip nanner for her to lay her paws on...I try to scratch her ears and forehead as she likes that too. And now I've tried RR. The things we do for our furbabies!

My mom said she'd ask dad if he could rig something like an IV pole up, but I'm still going to ask around to see if I can buy one, in case. It's funny, I thought about the nail, but it would be in a really obvious place in my white kitchen...maybe I could paint it white

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

Hi Rachel,
I'm sorry to hear that Chyna has been a bit off, but glad the fluids session tonight went better.

I'm by myself for Lucy's fluids too, but I'm lucky that she just stays still now and I just have to lightly hold the needle so it wouldn't slip out.
I don't have the stand either because I do the fluids wherever she happens to be lounging at the time, and I think my approaching her with a big stand will freak her out.
But before she used to try to get away, and I used my legs to contain her. Not very attractive, but hey it worked.
One day there will be a day Ginger also needs fluids support, and I am worried about that as she will be much more wiggly and hates being restrained.
Probably Ginger will be more like Chyna.
My plan is to put her in a box, maybe a clear plastic box, so she can see through, but can't move ahead or back.....
I'll just have to not let her jump.... Hmmm maybe I should try now and see if she'd really stay still....

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

Thanks Mariko! It's just weird we've been doing them every second day since September and just the past few days she decided to be squirmy and grouchy...of course right when the vet says ok you can do them every day   . She used to (usually) just sit there and eat her treats, and only got antsy at the end, she doesn't like being restrained but I just lightly had my arms around her. Here's hoping she will adjust again to the munching treats kitty, like she did with the other pokies! I don't blame her, I don't think I'd appreciate all the poking and prodding :? . I hope your Ginger experiment goes ok ;-)

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

Oh, Rachel, you gave me a good chuckle with your funny, "maybe the vet will sell me one cheap."

I am glad that fluids went a little easier for you tonight. When you do it on the kitchen counter, could you put a hanging hook on the top of the cabinet door while it is opened? Not sure if that would be the right height, but just throwing another thought out there.

Hope Chyna stays happy and you able to figure out a comfortable way to get through the fluids for both of you. You are doing a fantastic job with her. Cleo's hair is flaky/greasy/shedding too - maybe the change of seasons?

Have a good night!

Re: 3/15 Chyna PMPS 221 +2 211

I was thinking, maybe you could use a plant hanger with an S hook as an IV stand? In my pea brain I was picturing using the corner of a room so maybe she would feel safe & enclosed. I don't know Chyna - maybe she wouldn't appreciate feeling boxed in. I hope you can find a simple solution.

Since you're scrambling numbers around, lil Chyna, how about 122? Have a good night guys!

Thanks for visiting, Jane and Tara! And for the suggestions :-D . I thought about the cupboard one and the screwing one of those hook things into the ceiling so great minds think alike ;-) . The cupboard may work but I'd like it higher since I used a door hook thing it was a few inches from the top...and the ceiling one I'd have to buy a stool to reach it (haha, yes I have chairs, that was a joke) but it might work :-D . I don't have any corners to use though, I have a small house with all my stuff jammed in where I can  . The kitchen will probably work.

Well, we're blue, and it's bedtime. Night night LL! Thanks for all your input today

What about in the shower? Can you twist a cost hangar, hang it over the shower head, and sit in the shower or tub with her? That's how a friend of mine did them.

I hope she will settle down for her fluids.

i like the shower idea! we used to do them on the floor with the bag hanging on a hangar from the door jamb. great gravity flow! we could only get punkin to hold still for long enough to do it if he was eating - and even that took 2 of us. i tried a few times on the sofa - what a joke!

looks like Chyna is coming down quite nicely now! hope you're having a great evening!
