We're not in the lagoon, but this is much more Trixie-like....although I guess bounces like yesterday's are also Trixie-like these days, too  ! She tried her best at some kibble-thievery again today, but that's not really anything unusual. I have to admit she did get away with one; she's pretty guts in that she'll try to dive in if we so much as blink an eye - literally. And she is FAST> So, yesterday, she was in kitty-heaven, when MamaBean actually walked into the other room while kibbles were on the floor  !

Not only is today my long day at work this week, but I'll be manning the Artful Beads booth at the Princeton Farm Market. I'll be able to check up on everyone through my phone at times, but even if I don't respond in condos, I'm thinking of everyone.

Have a great day, LL!

Amy

Nice +2.5 there Trixie. She is getting back to her normal self. No more kibble silly girl. Sounds busy but fun there. Have a great day Amy!!

Morning Amy, it looks like Trixie is getting back to her usual numbers. They are about the same AMPS. So funny with the kibbles on the floor! Have a good day, sounds very busy. Maybe some Mannie coffee today!

Yo Trixie! Surf safe today. I'm watching from the shore.

Hi Amy, Sounds like you have a busy day ahead. Enjoy the Princeton Farm Market. Do they have it all winter? I can't wait for ours to start up again, but that won't be until May.

Have a fine day,

Ella & Rusty

Amy

I'm so so sorry it has taken me virtually all week to post about Trixie's USG and protein in her urine. I know it's a tough bit of news to hear but the GOOD news is you can keep her stable for a long time to come. You have caught it really, really early. It's also great that you have a baseline USG for her because when the time comes for fluids (and she's not needing those now for certain), then you know what you started at. Fluids always bring the USG down.

Many vets are still very old school and believe that a low protein diet is the way to go. You are correct to be leery of that. I think that the more proactive and up-to-date vets realize that it doesn't make sense to feed a low protein diet to a cat already possibly leaking protein. They need high quality protein (not an overabundance but not a low-protein diet) to help maintain muscle mass because CKD usually does result in a loss of muscle mass. So for right now, I'd focus on those low phosphorus foods. As others have said, Ann/Tess has put together a list of low phosphorus/low carb foods and Jill has posted some on the "New to the Group" sticky. Ann has really brought Tess's phosphorus levels down and that's huge in making sure they continue to feel really good.

I don't remember if you posted her HCT/HGB or PCV (depending on the lab, it would either be HCT or PCV). That's another area where you can start watching her closely and supplementing if her HCT is starting to decline. You should be seeing the HCT/PCV (whichever your lab uses) above 30% ideally. If it's below 25%, I'd consider starting some B vitamins. Let me know and I can tell you what, etc, which you should run by your vet. I think the B vitamins have been incredibly instrumental in us being able to keep Gus's HCT up and his anemia under control.

I really tired after a very long day...but thank you for the info, Marje! I've got it printed out...so much easier to follow and not at all overwhelming. I am very surprised that my vet's office is still so old school on this, but I don't know how my exact vet is on the subject, since it was a different vet who called with Trix's results and said we need to think about lowering her protein (ie, that treating CKD trumps treating FD). The actual vet who sees our kitties is unusually well informed about nutrition, plus she said that I obviously have a very good handle on Trix's FD and would leave all of that up to me. No doubt, she'll leave this up to me, too...and, naturally, there really is no other way to go, since Trix lives here :-D !

We're still waiting on the culture results. Honestly, I don't think it'll show anything, because there is nothing that points to an underlying infection. But, of course, the vet who did call with Trix's BW results kinda made me feel like I'd really better run the culture...

Trix's HCT is 38.9%, so we're looking pretty good there so far.

I'm going fuds shopping tomorrow...I'll study Dr Lisa's list in the morning, when I have a fresh brain.

Excellent on the HCT!!!

One thing I forgot to tell you is that the protein in the urine could be nothing. Gus often has protein in his urine and a little protein is not of concern unless they have proteinuria. To find out if it's something to be concerned about, you can have them run a protein:creatinine ratio. It can be run on a free catch and the hope is that it is below 0.2. Gus's has always been. The catch is that diabetic cats can have proteinuria. I'm not sure how prevalent that is or what causes it or if it is unregulated diabetics that tend to have it. But, next time you have a urinalysis, if you have a few extra $$, you could have them run that test.
