Friday's Condo

Happy Caturday everyone! I'm going to venture out today to the Farmer's Market - which has moved to a new location - I think the other one was too crowded? And they're trying to avoid 'crowding'..

Mom was discharged from the hospital yesterday - I spoke with her for a while and she was cantankerous as usual and perhaps more so than usual. I'll be calling again today to see if she's calmed down. The hospital was stressful for her - when dementia is involved it's really hard to negotiate everything...

Luci's foot continues to improve. I've noticed that it is smaller and less furry than her right foot...but that's to be expected considering she was in that cast for 3 1/2 months - she's running and walking fine and occasionally seems to favor that foot a little...but it's not a steady thing and she seems very comfortable.

It's been a challenging week with work - very intense as we ramp up our new server and refactor thousands of pages of code to work in the new environment. Since I work for a major medical center they've been constantly sending out emails about the COVID-19 issues and how we're all to handle that. On Friday they finally sent all of the non-patient care staff home to work remotely - I think it's about time. It just lessens the load on resources for those who need to be there to care for patients - more parking, less traffic, and less crowds of people coming and going.

I sure hope I can find a few groceries this morning - the news makes it look as if there's nothing left in the stores...but I've been so busy this week there was no opportunity to go buy anything earlier. I'm just hopeful that they've had a chance to re-stock. I see that Publix (big in our area) has decided now to close all of their stores at 8 p.m. every night to allow for cleaning and restocking. Personally I think that should be more the norm than not - stores that are open 24/7 aren't getting cleaned and the stock people are in the aisles trying to stock the shelves while the shoppers (myself included) are trying to negotiate crowded isles. Maybe I'm old, but I remember when most of the stores did close early in the evenings and on Sundays. Staff were allowed time to clean and stock the stores AND got the day off on Sunday to rest. Maybe it's time we returned to that type of culture instead of this constant go-go-go one we have now.

I hope you will all be safe and have made plans to stay at home as much as possible - avoid crowds - stay 5-6 feet away from people you're speaking with - and most of all WASH YOUR HANDS and DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE.

Hey Sue and Luci !
So glad Luci is running still ! im glad your mom is doing ok . All of my grandparents had dementia . Its a hard thing to deal with . I told my mother the grocery stores will be shutting down next . Shes like why ? Mama everyone else is going home they do have employees too ? Thats a great place for the virus . Lots of touching and handling money and food ! She says but we gotta have food to eat? Lol i tell her yes mama but they gotta protect theirselves too . If it gets bad enough they will . I hope it doesnt. You know Tom Hanks and his wife and supposedly John Travolta have the virus . Have a great time at the Market . In Germany the markets are so nice . And its a store for each item .. a bakery a vegetable stand, you know .. its a nice place . I have only gone back once since i was born to see my Paw Paw before he passed . You know in Germany they do not use ice ? My sister in law loves ice the only place she found ice was at the MC Donalds at the airport . And do you know they had the old cigarette machines lol !
My other sister in law works for the research triangle psrk they have decided to work from home too for a few weeks . My son in law works at a hospital they can not leave the patients also so they are checked everyday for fever snd symptoms before they start working ! Have a great day !

Maybe it's time we returned to that type of culture instead of this constant go-go-go one we have now.

I totally agree! Years ago Sunday nearly everything was closed. It was a time to be with family!

Went to the K mart early yesterday just to pick up an extra box of Relion Prime strips. It was kinda scary! The shelves were bare thru out the store & no strips on the shelf. I asked when they would get some in & pharmacist said they don't know !
She said everytime they get them they're sold out in mins!

I'm glad Luci's paw is improving and your mom got to go home. I hope things settle down soon with everyone rushing out to buy everything and not leaving things for anyone else.

I've been thinking about you & your mom.I'm listening to an audio CD whenever I'm in my car. (car's 20 yrs old & still has a CD player  )

The Cd I'm listening to now is "Being Mortal & What matters in the End" by Atul Gawande You can get it free at the library or on Amazon. Kindle, book or CD. https://www.amazon.com/Being-Mortal-Medicine-What-Matters/dp/B00NPAJ32S?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

Lots of really good info about how to help older parents . What they need to make their life happier. Information that we will all need some day!

Something else I read a while back was about a study done at nursing homes. They played music from when the people were 16 to 22 yrs old. Amazing things happened. People that had dementia began talking about their life & "smiling" !

My mother was in a nursing home for only 4 weeks to get rehabilitation after an illness. It was considered one of the Better nursing homes! It was Horrible. I was there every day for 8- 10 hours. I don't understand why they don't at least play music for the people. Such a simple thing to do.

I'm putting it in my will ,what I want when my time comes!! Just wanted to mention this CD I think everyone with aged parents should listen to it.
