Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
After going back and forth about whether to start Simon on the antibiotic for his UTI, I decided to go ahead and start the medication. Even though his UTI is very minimal, it is a different type of bacteria that is fairly uncommon in cats. I thought about monitoring him a few weeks, but I don't want the infection to become something bigger and harder to treat. I'm going with my vet's recommendation and I just hope I am doing the right thing. After Simon's huge reaction to the ear drops, I am really nervous he is going to react to the baytril. The dosage the vet gave me meets the guidelines for a cat his side so it is not a huge amount and I am giving 1/2 pill 2x/day. Simon is good this morning, eating well and chilling out. He had no problem taking the pill in the Greenies allergy forumula pill pocket. He just loves them! Keeping fingers crossed that the antibiotic doesn't do anything crazy with Simon's bg.

Have a wonderful day!

Re: 3/13 Simon AMPS 112

Hi Georgia. Happy Sunday.

Baytril did a number on my dogs appetite. So you may have to get creative with Simon. We were told by some doggie folks not to give probiotic yoghurt with baytril also - just a heads up. I wouldn't play around with a UTI either.

Did you find out if its spread in the litterbox?

I wonder if it will help ear infections too? Or is this something that needs the drops? I wonder if baytril will have a positive impact on BG if it makes him feel better.

Good luck!!!

Good morning, Georgia!

Better safe than sorry, so I think it's the right thing to do to treat Simon's 'mini-infection' before it gets bigger. I know I'm a bean and not a cat, but I ignored a UTI once, thinking it had gone away. Meanwhile, it had "crawled upstairs" and was wreaking havoc on my poor kidneys! Some time in the hospital taught me a lesson for sure. I hope Simon tolerates the meds well. If his numbers go wonky, at least you have an idea what's causing it. Good luck and healing vines to you and Simon today! :YMHUG:

Nice amps today Simon! Nice and flat and low level blue! Good luck with the AB's. I have no experience with the baytril - just clavamox. Mannie loves the greenies too - ate them right up, no problem. Sure made pilling easy. I think probably a wise decision on the Ab's. I just know from my dealing with Mannie that waiting for him was not a good decision. I hope all goes well with Simon.

Re: 3/13 Simon PMPS 114

Simon has surfed in the low blues all day and I'm happy with these numbers. I am a little confused about the Baytril. I was getting ready to give him the PM 1/2 tab of baytril when I noticed on the bottle that it said 1/2 pill every 24 hours. I thought that most antibiotics are 2x/day. I didn't give him the pill and will call the vet in the AM to see if possibly it was a typo and he meant every 12 hours. Simon is eating well today and doesn't seem to have any stomach issues so far (keeping fingers and paws crossed he likes the antibiotic).

Re: 3/13 Simon PMPS 114

It's possible that the Baytril is a once a day dose. It all depends on the pharmacological properties of the medication. It's obviously best to ask, though. Since you're calling the vet, make sure it's OK to administer the Baytril and Pepsid at the same time or if they need to be separated by a specific period of time. Some medications need an acid stomach environment to work. The Pepsid would reduce stomach acid and could have an effect on the Baytril if it's one of those ABs that needs an acid environment.

Sienne, thank you for letting me know about the possible problem with pepcid and some medications. I was giving the pepcid first and then the antibiotic shortly after. I'll ask the vet if I need to have a longer timeframe between the two.
