Good Morning ~O) Gobbles woke up in such a cheerful mood! Probably for one thing, because I shut off his PM+6 alarm last night and fell back to sleep. He ate 2 T. LC @PM+10 and one T. LC @AMPS. One moderate pee clump in LB. Preening. Sociable. He has a vet visit this afternoon and I will be bringing his Labs from SS (goes all the way back to 2009) and have a few questions: Ideal weight? Prescribe appy stimulants & anti-nausea medication. Request a pancreatitis test (possibly--anyone know the approximate cost or is it "quite expense"???) & routine labs. I've read about "Snap fPLI" and "Spec fPL1"--dependent on the cost I would like to get one of these done.
We are also taking the drooler in for a new patient visit and running a little short on cash....

Don't forget to buy your raffle tickets & please tell your friends, family, co-workers, etc. about our fun fundraiser! http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=90614

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

Morning Kat, ~O)

I can't answer your questions, but wanted to pop in and say hello and wish you luck with the vet visit today.

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

Wishing and hoping for Gobbles to make a full and speedy recovery if it's what you think it is. Also, hoping that his #s come down very soon. Have a great day.

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

The Snap and Spec fPLI are the same test. The only difference is that the Spec version has to be sent out to a lab and the results give you an actual value. The Snap is done in the vet's office (if the vet has the kit) and it gives you a + or - result (think pregnancy test type results). I don't know the costs.

I just assumed the Snap would be cheaper since it doesn't have to be sent out. Is the test specific to pancreatitis only? I assume if he is positive, the vet would prescribe something? If so, for example, maybe appy stimulants? anti-nausea? bupe?

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

Just stopping in to send good vetty vines and prayers for Gobby!!! I'll be watching for an update. Have a great day, Kat!

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

Hi, Kat ~ my think vet charges around $60-70 for the p'titis test. Ripley had one done recently, but the results came back waaaay off the charts because there needs to be a fasting period prior to the test (even though my vet said fasting wasn't necessary). Was likely a false positive. Just a heads up.

Good luck with the vetty visit today!

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

It also depends on whether your vet charges for the blood draw and to actually mail the test out. I had my vet run the specfPL/folate/cobalamin bundle because I wanted to look at a few other parameters and it was $132.50 for the test itself and then additional for the blood draw and mailing to the lab.

Josie is right, though. Many vets will say it does not have to be fasted but if you want an accurate test, you need at least a six hour fast or you could be wasting your money. Before Gracie was dx, I had them run the test and they didn't have me fast and the numbers were ridiculous. So my vet was nice enough to comp the retest with Gracie fasting and the test came back in the normal range. When I had the test done last fall, I fasted her six hours.

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 ? pancreatitis

Yikes...he certainly cannot get it done then--he's eaten twice already today and well, he seems better now. He's eaten and we've got 4 of 5 P's (waiting on poo)!

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 +3.5 242

I paid $85.58 last March and the same last April.

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 +3.5 242

Hey Kat, I had the SPEC FPL test done, the other one I believe has a higher chance of false positive/ false neg. The SPEC FPL gets sent to A&M in texas at the IDEXX lab < like the only place that does the test. Not positive tho.
Pancreatitis
I don't remember the exact price of the test but remember thinking it was chepaer than I would have suspected. I can look up his bills, but at the moment I have lil Ruben sleeping on me and don't want to move  Oh I freakin love him. Love feeling his lil warm body on me.
Good luck today at the vetty, Your lucky to have a vet who will even look at your SS. Any vet I've taken Ruben to, the fist thing they comment on is how often I test, it's like they miss the data or purpose of the SS.
Great job on the money raised so far...Yay!!! Hoping everyone put the tickets in any envelope except the necklace... Thats the one I'm hoping for.
Looking forward for the update on the kitties, Breath and think positive. I know I am
((((Ka & sweet sweet Gobby)))

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 +3.5 242 +6 164

Hi Kat. I hope Gobbles vet visit gets the problem with his appy and nausea diagnosed and he can get started on a treatment. Sorry, I can't give any advise or approximate cost on the pancreatitis test. You might ask the vet if you get the one done in his office and it comes back positive is he going to want to do the test that gets sent to Texas A&M for a more definitive result to be sure it is a real positive. If he says yes it might be cheaper in the long run to get that one done and avoid paying for both. Hope I stated that understandably.

Hope "the drooler's" vet visit goes well aso.

Great job on the fund raiser. Hopefully you'll get a lot more participants.

Have a great day.

Thanks Dyana; didn't have the test done. Gobbles ate a few hours before the visit. Report below.

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 +3.5 242 +6 164 +7 202 Vet Report

Gobbles (& Droolers) Vet report:

Gobbles went from 12.87 on his last visit, 2/26/13, to 12.81 pounds today = no real weight loss!!! Dr. gave him a Vitamin B 12 inection to see if that would stimulate his appy. He said he could prescribe appy. stimulants but they would make him drowsy as there is a sedative effect and would like to try the injection first. The tech took blood for Super Chem labs. Physical exam ok. Dr. advised to keep dose at .5 U for now (same as our experts!!!) and he will call me when Gobbles' lab report comes back. Gobbles had not fasted before the appointment. I took Gobbles' BG while waiting in the Vet's office and got 202.

Drooler, Jessie, is in great shape! She's a medium-size lab/shepherd 15 year old pound doggie. She was there for her continuing "itchies". She was prescribed prednisone every other day (which also helps with her hip dysplasia). Dr. said she is in good shape for her age.

Does anyone know about how long it takes for the B12 injection to kick in and stimulate appy?

Re: 3/13 Gobbles AMPS 387 +3.5 242 +6 164 +7 202 Vet Report

I love how the vets get on board with our dosing when they see how well it's doing. :-D
I don't like the fasting part either so I try to avoid it.

Will watch to see what the results say.

Re: 3/13 Gobbles PMPS 87 ? B12 injection & Vet Report

Does anyone know about how long it takes for the B12 injection to kick in and stimulate appy? Gobbles got his injection at approximately 2 PM and at 7 PM, he is still "picking" at his food....

Re: 3/13 Gobbles PMPS 87 ? B12 injection & Vet Report

I would think it would kick in in less than 5 hours, but I don't know. When I saw you wrote he is picking at his food, I automatically wanted to respond "did you get the Spec fPL", but I guess you didn't.
Sending eat your food and better appetite vines to Gobbles.

If he's not eating normal by tomorrow, I'll call the vet. He did say he wanted to try the B12 before prescribing appy stimulants (and he named the medicine--but it was greek to me and I forgot to write it down; would recognize it if I heard it though) because they had a sedative side effect. I didn't ask for the fPL because it was already about 11am by the time I seen something on my condo re: fasting--he had eaten at 10:30 and his appointment was at 2 pm; from what I read, it would of probably been a waste of money because he wasn't fasting...

Re: 3/13 Gobbles PMPS 87 +2 106 ? B12 injection, Vet report

It was probably mirtzapine or cyproheptadine . Both make my cats hyper...crying, pacing, etc. be sure Gobbles isn't acting nauseous before you give an appy stimulant.
