Last Condo

Good morning LL!
It's Friday! Hopefully the weekend and next week will be better.

Clyde was doing good this morning. He was around 100 on his BG. I think it was upper 90s. It wasn't a number that was outside his normal range. (I tested and the results are sitting on my meter at home, with everything else going on it was the least of my worries.)

Max is back at the vet this morning. Five days and three trips to the vet. He's not a happy camper. The good news is this morning I no longer saw his third eyelid covering his right eye and he seemed to be much less congested. His behavior seemed normal and he was back to being my alarm clock.

The bad news, and which resulted in me calling the vet's office when they opened is that I noticed his pupils were no longer symmetric. The pupil on the right eye looked weird. It was like the one side of his right eye was showing more of his iris then the other side. His left eye was perfectly round.

The vet's office had me bring him in and let me drop him off since I had to go to work before the vet came in. At this point, I'm just hoping it's a side effect of the medication and not a sign of something more serious.

The vet's office just called about Max.

It's not good.

My regular vet wasn't in. My regular vet will be retiring soon and sold the practice to another vet but is staying on for a couple of months to help with the transition. The new owner saw Max.

He said that he believes Max is now functionally blind. He looked at the x-rays that were taken on Wednesday and talked to my regular vet. With this latest development is their belief that the solid area is a tumor that is starting to eat away at the bone and pressing against the eye.

After talking with him, because Max is currently eating, he thinks he will be ok through Monday. We are going to make him comfortable as possible for the weekend and I will talk to my regular vet when she comes in on Monday. I told him that since my regular vet has been working with Max for 15 years, I want her to be the one to help him cross over.

So sorry to hear the news about Max!!

If his quality of life is still good, there's no reason you need to rush making the decision to help him cross over. Cats adapt really well to blindness, and if it's been coming on for awhile, Max is probably already been "preparing"....which is why if he truly is totally blind now, you hadn't noticed!

We know you'll do what's best for Max though....just so sad that it looks like his time might be close. We never have them long enough

The vet said his eyes aren't changing at all when he shines a bright light at them. I think he can see a bit, at least when the light levels are low. He's not moving around the house like he's totally blind.

I just picked up Max from the vet. He's now avoiding me like he typically does after a vet visit. I asked them to have my regular vet call me on Monday when she gets in just to make sure this is what is best for him. If it is, I have the last appointment of the evening on Monday night.

On a better note, Clyde appears to have spent most of the day so far in the lagoon. He posted a 91 at his +10.

@Tricia & Cinco Cinco has had both eyes removed and is a very happy camper. If it's possible to remove the eye with the tumour that might be an option to consider. Some hard choices coming up

Hi There. Is the tumor and blindess the only reason you are considering helping Max cross? I ask because Cinco had a tumor on one eye, which was found after he was diagnosed with glaucoma and was found to be totally blind. We removed the tumor, and the eye, and he did much better. He was also FHV positive, and kept getting infections in the other eye, so we removed it, too. This all happened about a year ago, and he is doing wonderfully. He just had his 6 month check up with the Oncologist, and no sign of cancer. He gets around the house just fine and his QOL is good. I would never consider letting him go unless he was miserable, and he is not.

Have you taken Max to an Ophthalmologist? If not, and if it is within your budget, I'd recommend that you do so. Cinco had a wonderful Ophthalmologist, and he took great care of him. His regular vet never noticed the tumor and wasn't even 100% sure that he was blind. Sounds like your vet is a little better.

Bottom line is, please don't give up on Max until you know you can't help him. Cat are amazingly adaptable. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I'm more than happy to help.
