Good morning all,

Shasta is about the same as yesterday...appy is ok, but not great. Got some purrs as part of my wake up call. She's preening at the moment. Pee and poo was good yesterday.

Question: is there anything that I can add (low carb) to her meals to help her add weight? I feel like she's starving to death. I give her as much food as she'll eat, but this low carb stuff just doesn't really appeal to her. Don't get me wrong...she's not emaciated or anorexic, but I just don't think she's getting enough calories per day to sustain energy. :-| Any suggestions would be appreciated.

OT: If my back is not better by tomorrow, my chiropractor will most likely send me for an MRI. There's a possibility that I have a bulging disc or weak/leaking discs due to an old accident from college. If it didn't hurt so bad, I'd laugh at the irony that I messed up my back while doing leg work at the gym.

Ok, off to get ready for work. Wishing everyone a spectacular day. Blessings to all, especially those dealing with loss, pain and/ illness.

I'd like J.D. to put on some weight, too.
All I can think of is more freeze dried all meat treats or boiled chicken, tuna in pure water, etc.
Some people here use Coconut Oil.
I'm sure you'll get other suggestions.

I hope Shasta slides down for you today. Hopefully your back will get better and you won't have to have an MRI.

Hi Deborah,

I was going to suggest the same thing that Dyana did. I sometimes sprinkle some freeze dried chicken treats on Kismet's meals. We use the Pure Bites Chicken which is only 1 calorie a piece, but there are other brands with slightly higher carb counts. I see you're feeding Shasta FF... have you looked at Dr. Pierson's chart for higher calorie, low carb foods? http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf Evo is still a low carb food, but has close to double the amount of calories than FF.

Sending vines for your back and hoping that it's nothing serious.

Hey, Deborah -

I don't have any suggestions for weight gain. I'd like Hershey to put on a little, too, but he can't seem to hold the weight. And, I can't exactly force feed him. So, I've given up on trying. He's feeling good, so I'm hanging on to that.

I'm sorry about your back pain; I sure hope it gets better soon. I've had two MRI's on my neck - one before surgery and one after. If you've never had one, I'd advise you to keep your eyes closed the whole time. A friend said they piped in music when she had hers done. I wasn't so fortunate. I just sang praise songs LOUDLY in my head and pretended the banging was Doug adding on to the house! :-D

I hope Shasta has come down some today and y'all are having a great night -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

I don't know about gaining weight...
my little girl gained all her weight back and probably more....
but there was a hint from something my dh told me the other day since Shadow prefers turkey anything to chicken...
turkey has a higher fat content than chicken.... so that' s probably why the preference.

I guess I've been lucky on my mri's. they always give me headphones and ask me what radio station i want to listen to.

Nice   tonight Shasta!

Some proteins have are higher fat than others (as Rhiannon suggests). Two other higher fat proteins are duck and lamb.

My DH injured his back doing exercises in the gym too. Core exerises did the trick.

Well! Look at Shasta splashing in the lagoon.  We give Zener a little bit of appy stimulant (cyproheptadine) to keep him eating. It was originally an asthma med but caused increase in appetite. We think Zener may have a touch of asthma so that part is ok too. Paws crossed for your back to get better.

Thanks everyone for the weight gain thoughts. I am trying to be more consistent with the Coconut Oil...she's very strange...doesn't like it in her food; can't put it in her bowl around the sides (away from her food); but she'll lick it off my finger - no prob! weirdo! She gets freeze dried treats (we're on Turkey right now) but she has a history of pukus after too many. She's on Fancy Feast because she'll actually eat it (most of the time...right now is not most of the time!). I've tried several of the Wellness flavors and I think I've tried an EVO (or I have some EVO)...I don't remember right now. I'll check on it this weekend. Kind of hoping someone had a miracle cure! ;-) Thanks again.

As for the MRI, I've never had one, but I've heard they can be "scary". As a singer, I constantly have music going in my head. Oddly enough, it's kind of nice (sometimes) to have a break from it and just listen to weird machine noises...I typically make up songs to those noises though. Me...in the copy machine room...by myself = hilarious dance/sing party!

Thank you all again! Hope you all had a wonderful day with happy healthy family members and kitties!

nice green for Shasta.

I don't find anything scary about mri's.
i can understand someone who is claustraphobic ... sorta... altho' the man made machine doesn't scare me....
but i get nervous if i'm in a cave crawling thru a small opening.... that makes me nervous... like the ground might start shaking....
i'll have to go look up a fear of caves....
i have vertigo and just getting in a cave now makes me spin now.

you might like the noise and even hear a song it the rhythms....
