Brian was super aware of doing tonight's shot correctly after thinking he likely gave a fur shot this a.m. due to the numbers we saw today. Now, seeing the +3, we're skeptical.

To recap:
AMPS 158 (beautiful!!)
+3 (174)
+4 (189)
+8 (225)
PMPS 302
+3 (287)

Our vial of insulin was just opened on 2/3!! What the heck?! It's only out of the fridge for 10 minutes (tops) a day. It does reside in the refridgerator door, so that may not be ideal due to opening/closing (and we plan to change that), but that's how we've been doing it all along.

Any ideas?

Re: 3/12 Johnny PMPS 302 +3 (287) ...insulin bad?

Is Johnny acting normal -- no change in any of the 5 Ps? Does he need a dental? (Don't I remember something about Johnny needing one?)

If you don't think there are any health issues (and you may need to get a vet appt. to rule this out), try a new pen and see what happens to Johnny's numbers.

Celi...I love that you call him JC! You're awesome.

I think Johnny definitely needs a dental. He's never had one and he'll be 10 this year. The vet has recommended one, but doesn't want to do the dental surgery until he's "regulated." He last saw the vet at the end of November when he started to require insulin again. Blood work was perfect.

I would be surprised to find out that an ongoing need for a dental would present so suddenly as NOW, but I don't know what else to think. He's pooing (and dancing, for those who remember!) and playing and all of the Ps...I can't remember what they all are, but he's been typical happy Johnny and there aren't any issues we can see. We didn't leave the insulin out. Everyone is eating the same food, etc.

also remember that due to the shed, if you really had a furshot this morning, the effects could just now be showing. Did Brian think it was a furshot because it felt wrong, or just because of the numbers?

Did your vet say what they would consider "regulated" enough to do a dental? Jazzy's numbers are pretty close to where Johnny's are now, and my vet considers her to be well regulated. Bad toofies can definitely cause wonky numbers and could very well be what is keeping Johnny from returning to the Falls.

Re: 3/12 Johnny PMPS 302 +3 (287) ...insulin bad?

The only thing that's been different these last few days is that we've been inching his shot time back to accommodate for the time change, but no more than the 15 minutes each day. And, if that was an issue, we'd have a "low" monkey, I'd think.

Re: 3/12 Johnny PMPS 302 +3 (287) ...insulin bad?

301 at +4. This makes me so sad. Maybe if we went to another vet (the one Sienne recommends) they would do the dental?! I don't know about the dangers of a dental in conjunction with DB, but his numbers lately don't make sense with today's. Lots of green on that chart. He definitely got barely-more-than-a-month-old insulin tonight. No drops...

Gabby has had 2 dentals since she was diagnosed and is probably due for another. My vet understands that the inflammation from gingivitis or a bad tooth will cause wonky numbers. (Cat Hospital of Chicago -- Holly Pohl, DVM. She's great. She just thinks I test too much!!)

Re: 3/12 Johnny PMPS 302 +3 (287) +4 (301) don't understand

@ Libby - It was just the numbers that made Brian think it was a fur shot. He didn't quite get on board that it coud be until the +4 today. Johnny is very compliant and has fine fur, so it's easy for us to tell when the needle is 'in.' The vet didn't specify exactly what she meant by 'regulated,' but given our discussion, she felt it was him receiving regular shots of the same dose for a period of time that kept him in normal numbers. Maybe I misinterpreted, since I'm skeptical that she is on the same page as to how much insulin he needs. We didn't go with her dose recommendation for round #2. I think she said 1.5 units. I could be wrong, because it sounded ridiculously high at the time.

@ Sienne - Maybe we should take him in to see Dr. Pohl...if this return from the falls could be dental related, I'd like to get a dental done. He started insulin in May 2010 and went OTJ 3.5 months later. Then, he was OTJ for 3 months and has now been back on insulin for 3.5 months. From what others have experienced, this doesn't seem to be normal. I know every cat is different, but he has become a little less responsive to the insulin, I think.
