Alley hasn't checked in since November and wants me to relay what she refers to as, "exciting news". She weights precisely what she wants to weigh. I'm not at all thrilled by this but she's very proud and wants the world to know. It's been a long fight. I started with a target weight for Alley of 13 pounds and she tried to murder me in my sleep. Some folks here might recall my account of waking up one night only to find Alley rooting around in the knife drawer. Well, not actually, but for the sake of hilarity, let's say it happened. So up and up her daily feeding amount has gone and we finally have peace at 16.5 pounds. It can be a problem since Alley has to eat up on kitchen counter (which I think is nasty, but she'd starve if her food was on the floor since Sophie craves Alley's food) and she sometimes has trouble making the leap from the chair to the counter.

Me: You look like a football from above.
Alley: I look in fine form.
Me: The extra weight aggravates your hip arthritis.
Alley: You should try minding your own damn business.
Me: You're so heavy, I have to pick you up sometimes to feed you.
Alley: Then get rid of the stupid dog.
Sophie: Remember, when you die, I'm going to pee on your grave.
Alley: Not if I kill you first.

Alley's blood glucose is holding steady enough. It's been most commonly in the low 70s and has crept up lately into the low 80s with this morning's reading at 84. If she starts to make a move toward the 90s, I'll step in and cut her food and push her back to 15 pounds. It wouldn't be pretty and I dearly hope I won't have to do this.

Other than the weight gain and hip arthritis, Alley is doing great. Blood work is due this coming July and I'm hoping her kidney numbers remain viable. Her BUN is getting up there (60s) but the more critical creatinine is still in the normal range at 2.0. The vicious fights that Alley and Sophie were getting into last summer are a distant memory. Again, some might recall that Sophie had a tough time accepting that, "No, Alley doesn't want your cookie", whenever Alley would walk past Sophie chewing on her dog treats.

Anyway, congrats to all the kitties who've joined Alley at the falls since last Summer, and God bless all the kitties having a tough time of it and especially God bless those kitties who've gone ahead.

I'm glad Alley is doing well overall. It is really hard to put a cat on a diet, especially a diabetic one. I hope her bloodwork comes back good. I'm glad things have settled down with Sophie and Alley.

Hi Dan!

How lovely to see an update on Alley! I miss your condos - they were always so entertaining. I'm glad she's enjoying life at the Falls and that she and Sophie have managed to maintain an armed truce.

With your chemical knowledge and skill, couldn't you manage to drop the calorie content of her food somewhat, while still giving her "enough" volume? Easier said than done, I'm sure. Alley, the alternative is less food, more moving around!

Are you giving her Cosequin or anything else for the arthritis?

Please don't wait so long to check in next time - we all enjoy hearing from you!

I messed with the fat content to bring the calories down, but then Alley poo-poo'ed the food. I supplement her food with glucosamine and chondroitin and that helps a good deal. Alley's movement suggests more stiffness than pain... sorta like my own movement.

And if Alley hasn't been a trooper enough, we have a friend with a two year old dachshund/min-pin mix (same as Sophie) who unfortunately has to give her up due to a long battle with cancer. We're seriously considering adopting her. Now this little girl is much more well-behaved than Sophie, but still, as they say, three's a crowd!

Figure I'll add this here rather than start a new thread. I was a bit concerned, perhaps paranoid that Alley gave an 84 for her BG last week. She's been a picture of consistency since she went OTJ back in June of last year with reading after reading in the low 70s. Today I tested her twice, in the afternoon she was 109 and now in the evening, she's at 95. These aren't numbers to be concerned about in their own right, but since they represent a departure from a previous consistent reading, they concern me in that they might be the start of a continuing trend in the wrong direction.

Any advice? Should I put her on a diet now since she's gained almost 4 pound since June (up to 16.5 lbs)? I really hate to do this because she's finally at the weight she wants to be and if kitty ain't happy, nobody's going to be happy. Or should I simply relax and continue to monitor to see if the upward trend stabilizes or continues? Maybe I'm just spoiled at the tight consistency she showed for so many months?

LOL'd at your post, Dan, and so happy to hear all the good news re Alley. Angel is a little envious of Alley -- he's down from his 12 lb of some years ago to 9 point something. Still, he looks healthy and fit (I THINK) but not the bruiser HE wants to be ;-).

Numbers can fluctuate. Is there anything going on that might be causing Alley to be stressed out? Does she act like she feels bad? I think I'd just keep an eye on her numbers and keep testing her. I hope she stays in normal numbers for you.

Hello Dan - good to see that Alley update. I had the constant battle between weight and arthritis too. Unfortunately, more weight does make the arthritis hurt more too. I wonder if there is an element of soreness contributing to her numbers. I wouldn't worry much about a number or two out. Might be time to see if the vet thinks Adequan might help Alley.

300 calories a day seems like quite a bit, of course it depends on how active she is too.

Hey Dan, good to see you and Alley. It could very well be the extra weight aggravating some arthritis . What should her idea weight be ? Maybe by using that figure in the formula for feeding would be enough to shave a few calories off her daily intake without too much fuss on her part .

Do I remember that you make her food? If so, what are the supplements you are adding I am thinking to make me own supplement mix.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Alley stressed? Nothing I can see unless you count eating and sleeping and laying in the sun as hard work. lol. Same goes for activity... eating, sleeping, and lounging.

Re the weight, it's clear that 300 calories is good for 16.5 pounds over the long term so if I want a lower weight, I'm going to have to cut the calories. Ideal is 12 - 13 pounds per the vet. Alley has made it perfectly clear that if I want her at 13 pounds, my only option is to kill her and wait a couple weeks (Hey, she said it, not me!)

There's room to cut the fat but not too much since if her food gets too lean, she won't eat it. Maybe a modest decrease in fat along with a 10% reduction in amount to try to get her closer to 15 pounds for a 10% reduction in her weight. She's down to her last 2 days of food, so I'll be making more today.

Me: Here you go Alley, a new batch of fuds, just like the last one!
Alley: NOM NOM NOM... What!? Do I detect a modest decrease in the fat? WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
Me: You know you're the last cat we're ever going to have?

Supplements are limited to taurine, B vitamins, vitamin E, and glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM. Her movement makes me think more of stiffness than pain. Plus, the more I pick her up and bring her to her food, the more Alley warms to the idea of meals on wheels.
