This is Georgie's second day (of three) that he will be on 1 unit of insulin. Hopefully his numbers will start to become more normal. The highs and lows really gave me a scare. The one thing that I have notices is that he is a whines a lot less for food (thank goodness). I will take that as a good sign. The other thing that I have noticed is that he takes a real solid nap right after eating. Does this seem normal. I have to go to work for eight hours today, hopefully he will be okay without monitoring during this time. He doesn't free feed though. Should I leave some food out just in case he drops down?

Both of those are great signs!! A cats normal cycle is play/hunt, eat, groom, nap. So he's getting back in the normal groove again.

If you're worried about him dropping low then leave him a snack before you head out and maybe grab an out the door test. When I have to leave mine I'll grab an out the door test and then when I get home an in the door test. Just to reassure myself.

This is a good number.

If you are fearful of a large drop you could leave a snack. I give my sugar Wellness Core canned food for a snack because it is 8% carbs - high enough to stop him from dropping too low and then bouncing the next day.

looking good today, Georgie! I freeze the little cans of Fancy Feast to leave out when I know I am going to be away from home for many hours. Just run hot water over the frozen can to melt the outside, tip the frozen hockey puck of food out onto a shallow bowl. The cats nibble at it as it thaws during the day.

..unless you have a Bing who eats it while it is frozen and leaves nothing left to thaw for the others ohmygod_smile

Yay Georgie... that's a very nice start for the day! After my Max eats breakfast, he goes off for a nice big nap. Once he's out of the kitchen, I put a snack down before I leave for work. I add water to the wet food to keep it from drying out. Max has figured it out and after his nap will come up in the afternoon and snack. I do the same thing before I go to bed and put a little snack out for Max to eat later in the night.

Re: 3/12/2014 Georgie AMPS 239 BIG SPIKE

So Georgie's PMPS level was at 195. An hour later, after his insulin (1 unit) and dinner it spiked to 594. What is going on here?

He bounced plus food. His body doesn't remember what those blues and probably even green today feels like yet so it interprets it as the onset of hypo so reacts exactly like when it hit those 30s.

Plus his evening dose isn't even going to kick in for another hour or two and his shed hasn't filled yet it takes 3-5 days at the same dose for that to happen. It has to build up in his system first.

You're Welcome. That's what we're here for to answer questions and share what we learned from others that went before us. One day you'll be the one holding the hands and paws of the next batch of newbies. :-D

Whenever I get an unexpectedly low or high number, I do a retest maybe 15 minutes later. Glucometers are not precision tools, so I always suggest retesting "out of the ballpark" readings.

I actually did test 15 minutes later. The first one said Hi and the next one was in the upper 500's. I hope my meter isn't off.
