hey there, long time no see :-)

anyhooo, i just picked up a kitty today for DCIN and am fostering him for a bit.

HISTORY:
diagnosed diabetic in January 2011 and was on lantus 1 unit twice a day. There is no history of glucose numbers other than what is on his last labwork that looks to be from May 2011 if I am remember correctly.

bean fell on hard times and has not been able to give him insulin for a bit now, exactly how long I cannot say but I would say it's been at least a month from other details I know about her situation.

been eating trader joe's dry food, will eat wet she said and he was eating a fancy feast appetizer when I arrived at our meeting point today. she said he likes chicken anything and his favorite treats are temptations in the yellow bag. obviously we are going to get rid of the dry and the temptations. :-) he'll be on the same low carb friskies as my cats tonight, assuming he'll eat it.

we arrived home just about half an hour ago and i've checked him out. he actually seems pretty healthy. no signs of any illness, ie. mites, cold, etc.... no signs of neuropathy. not too stressed out really given what he's been thru the last few weeks and then being in a strange place. i am aiming to get a temp and a ketone test today too

tested his BG within 10 minutes of getting home and got a 287. not bad i thought given the dry and the stress and strangers. drank quite a bit as soon as i offered it to him. gonna see if he'll eat my wet of choice here in a minute.

oh, i did the old weigh me, pick him up, weigh again, do the math thing and he looks to be roughly 12 lbs. he's a maine coone mix btw.

i'm thinking starting him at 1/2 unit twice a day tonight or does anyone think I should do more than that to start?

i haven't bothered with a ss for Mousie in so long but I will get one going for Qxxyd here in just a bit hopefully. might need a refresher course on that :-)

Re: 3/11 Qxxyd-foster kitty, would like your input before

287 for dry food and high carb treats isn't too bad . . . i'd probably lean towards the .5u and since you're going to be testing, i assume, you'll know if it's too much. wonder what he would be on straight LC food?

Re: 3/11 Qxxyd, would like your input before

yeah i already have visions of an off the juice kitty here pretty soon :-)

get him back on insulin, lower his carb intake, and no more changes in his life for awhile and i bet that old glucose settles down quite a bit :-)

yeah, Mousie's made my life pretty easy with her diabetes but now it's back to frequent spot checks and curves again, at least until we get him figured out. c'est la vie

I explained to fiance when I asked him about this that it could be a whole different ballgame than Mousie, what with her being diagnosed young and having no complications. This guy is a senior and who knows what he's got going on for him just yet. I think his vet records said his birthdate was 1997. We'll see. For now I want to get him on insulin and proper food before he has a chance to develop a complication like ketones and fiance agreed so here we are

cindy, i'm just sitting here thinking that it's really good of you to take him in!

Re: 3/11 Qxxyd-foster kitty, would like your input before

I agree, that's awesome! He is a very lucky little guy. :-D Got any pics of him yet?

Re: 3/11 Qxxyd, would like your input before

LOL! I'll have plenty of pics of him in no time at all :-)

for now the only one i have access to on the computer is the one on DCIN's page so here's that link

Cindy --

Your plan sounds good to me. He's adorable, BTW!!

Let us know if we can help.

Re: 3/11 Qxxyd would like your input before

fwiw, wet is NOT going to be a problem :-) he gladly gulped up some friskies canned. he was so happy about it that we had to step in and regulate him a little for fear he'd scarf and barf

Re: 3/11 Qxxyd, PMPS 218

ok, here we go. first pmps is 218 (down from 287 when we first got home) and i went with the 1/2 unit. i'll get a test or two in tonight just to make sure he's doing ok with that. don't really expect to see much for a couple days but you never know, we've seen kitties react to their first dose occasionally so i'll be safe and get some extra tests in tonight

eta: btw, his pmps was better than Mousie's tonight. she didn't like that big carrier coming thru the front door. any movement of a carrier, filled or empty, and she goes into panic mode. LOL!!

What a lucky guy! So glad to hear everything is going well. Mousie, it's ok. You're not going anywhere. :-D

he's gorgeous! his face actually looks a lot like a gray version of punkin. are those big eyes characteristics of maine coons? i've been told punkin is maine coon as well.

looks like it will be a quiet night. :-)

tech question: someone remind me how to add a signature to all of my posts? i can do it to each post but i thought there was a way for it to always be included without my having to remember to do it??

Good to see him here- I saw him on DCIN's page, and it's nice to see him with a condo. Thanks to you for taking him in. Those numbers don't look bad at all, considering everything. What a champ!
