Georgia and Simon (GA)

I need some help with some test results and whether I should put Simon on antibiotics. The urine culture came back from the vet and tested slightly positive for beta hemolytic strep. Simon's vet said this is pretty unusual to find in cat urine. He said that Simon's result was not really significant and said that he was at 1000 CFU/ml and 10,000 is a very significant number for cats. I don't really know what these numbers mean. Simon's vet said that since he is diabetic it might be a good idea to go ahead and put him on an antibiotic just to be safe. My question is: Does he really need an antibiotic? I am pretty nervous about starting him on it because just last week he was on a steroid ear drop for only 2 days and it caused his bg to skyrocket (just when he was getting ready for a trial of no insulin!). Today was the first day he started coming back down to normal numbers. Any help with this is appreciated. Thanks!!
