Hey everyone!

Carter is 8 months in remission, hurray!

So I posted last time that I suspect Carter has IBD but we will be getting an ultrasound done with a possible biopsy at our new veternary practice once we arrive in Seattle (2 weeks until the big move!!) as my current veternarian admittedly is not very well-versed in treating a cat with diabetes and possible IBD and didn't want to refer me to someone here when we're not going to be living here shortly.

Carter gets:
A probiotic/digestive enzyme twice daily.
Slippery Elm/George's Aloe Vera before his breakfast and dinner meals.
I got a RX for Cerenia as well, and the new veterinarian might prescribe Bupe (I think that's what it is, the alternative to Pred but I can't remember the rest of the name off the top of my head.)
I've done an elimination diet and nothing sticks out as a sole trigger but I'm trying to avoid chicken/beef/fish where possible.

Despite my best efforts, raw just hasn't been working for him, he would vomit on and off either with homemade, premade, etc. He didn't have nearly as many issues when on canned. I decided to switch him back to high quality canned (Ziwipeak) and I noticed he has been having slightly lose stool. So basically raw makes him vomit and this particular food is making him have the runs. I was feeding him Weruva canned before but it has so many gums and fish which I was trying to avoid so I tried Ziwipeak for the novel proteins, but now I'm wondering if I should go back to Weruva? Or maybe Tiki Cat's Gourmet Line?

I found the brand "Koha" at a local shop here and bought him some of the "stew" cans, he enjoys it but I'll have to see how he does. Does anyone have experience with these foods? According to the carb calculator the "stew" formulas came out low carb, even in negative numbers which is suppose to indicate "super low carb", but the pate LID version had some of the proteins well above 10%. Does that seem right? He had the Kangaroo Stew today and his BG was 68 +3 hours after eating so it clearly didn't cause a spike but it seems weird since it's in a gravy texture - but I specifically went for the stew because of it being low carb, gum free, agar-agar free and carrageenan free.

If someone could check my math, that would be awesome! Any advice appreciated!

Doodles had the U/S and biopsy done back in 2015 and it came back mild IBD/ food allergies. The IM vet wanted him on Atopica which is an alternative to pred. Pred will likely knock Carter out of remission. I declined the meds for Doodles and got this allergy test done. It's not validated but he hasn't had any IBD symptoms since I was able to eliminate 95% of his "allergens" ImmuneIQ Groupon It's $45 on Groupon, they mail you the kit, you mail back a hair and saliva sample. There are so many ingredients in cat food that I've become a master label reader. Fortunately he does well on ZiwiPeak. His results are in my signature.

The protein levels are fine....it's the carbs that need to be under 10%

The real test for any food is the numbers....the Kangaroo stew looks fine to me when I calculate it and since it didn't spike Carter's numbers, that's the answer you need!!
Sorry Chris I meant that certain proteins in the pate form (when I calculated them) came up at over 10% carbs. I just thought it was weird that the stew would be lower than the pate. :bookworm:

Yeah I would decline the Pred as well unless absolutely necessary, fortunately if he does have IBD I don't think it's as bag as some other cases. I will definitely check out that allergy test, thank you so much!

Hi Erica - happy 8 month aversary. Make sure you pack your woolies when you move up here. Winter doesn't seem to want to move on.

It's budesonide you want for gut inflammation (not buprenorphine) instead of prednisolone. Budesonide did not spike Neko's blood sugar. Depending on where the vet sees inflammation in the bowels on the ultrasound, they may be able to do diagnosis via endoscopy, which is less invasive that a biopsy.

Feline Naturals got 4 paws up here, and in Vancouver it's cheaper than Ziwipeak. The Koha has agar agar in it, at least the cans I have around, and it's derived from red seaweed the same as carrageenan, which some kitties can't handle. You may find it's a food additive, not a particular protein that's the problem.

Good luck with the move.
