Nova and I are still around.. have just mostly been spending more time with her in her favourite places which don't happen to be near the computer.. she's doing good.. she's still not feeling fantastic.. but her spirit has been improving in the last day or so..
Nova isn't exactly one of those open her mouth and say aaaaaah for the dentist sort of cats.. so we had some surprises (good and bad) when she was under and they could get a complete looksie.
They only ended up removing one tooth (much less then expected).. but it was a doozy... resorption.. the dental surgeon said we actually caught it earlier then often is the case.. but looking at the xrays I don't see how it could have been caught much later, was nothing really solid left of the tooth but the outer shell. Her gums were growing over the tooth.. I don't remember all the details.. but it ended up taking almost hour of digging around and restructuring the area. Left a pretty big hole, which they stitched up really well.. but it's still a big hole.
The other adventure as far as the surgery was her top 2 canines.. I was pretty worried about them, was a good chance they had to go.. there was lots of swelling, little bit of infection, some bone loss.. but it turns out that under the gums the canines are still mostly there.. and since removing canines is a pretty significant deal.. the surgeon felt we should make a real go at trying to save them... and heck I'm up for anything
. Cat toothpaste ingredients seem to be sugar, sugar, some random thing, sugar, etc.. so going to give that clear liquid stuff (that I can't remember the name of, and cats of course hate the taste of) a shot..wipe her canines with that each day (once the surgeon gives the go-ahead).. decent chance the teeth will still have to go sooner or later.. but she'll have frequent dental check ups and hopefully we can keep them in her head as long as possible.
They did a big cleaning.. things were nasty.. she's got some pearly whites now though, she glows from across the room when she yawns
. Anyways.. because of the infections (not really bad) around her 2 big teefs, and some of the gunk they removed from the teeth pretty likely ending up in the grand canyon hole she has from her resorption removal.. the plan of no antibiotics went out the window.. I brought her home with antibiotics (clindamycin) and pain killers (tramadol).
She's really sensitive to the antibiotics (clindamycin).. gets sick off them.. and has some weird side effects..so she's on a reduced dose which she seems to be handling ok (aside from HATING me every 12 hours for giving it).. hopefully it's enough to chase all the bad stuff away.. Never did get the pain killers (tramadol - can't get buprenex in canada) down her.. she actually seemed to be less mouth sensitive after the surgery then before, and doesn't seem to be in much pain.. I couldn't get her to eat anything with the powder in it (even tried parmesan cheese).. she's nutorious for being a real tough piller (and I have a heart disease cat and an immune system disorder cat, I pill like a pro!
).. her doctor didn't want me forcing it if she wasn't suffering, and risking ripping stitches.. so I've just been keeping a real good eye on her watching for signs of any discomfort..
Her diabetes.. meh.. gong show... right before her surgery she started rebounding like crazy and feeling crappy.. her teeth really couldn't wait any longer..so I backed off on the insulin a tiny bit so she could have a couple days in the blues so she could get some good rest. Since, I haven't tested her BG much, have been at her side almost 24/7 and she's been eating like a horse so haven't been too worried about her getting too low. It sure is easier to catch pee tests when I've always got a litterbox within 10 feet of us (moving a portable one around when she moves so she doesn't have to go far)..
As for her human.. I'm TIRED!!! exhausted.. worried.. stressed.. you name it!
Hopefully Nova feels a lot better and I can get a safe-ish dose settled in her in the next week.. a week from today my husband (who currently works in the US.. sigh).. and I are going on our "honeymoon".. taking a quick trip to the mountains for the weekend (honeymoon 6 months ago was canceled because of sick kitties)... One of the assistants from the vet is (foolishly) brave enough to come live at my house while I'm gone and go for the challenge of taking care of my 3 special needs cats... all of which get medications and hate to be held, touched and/or medicated.. I wish her the best of luck
.
But anyways.. Wed night I could tell Nova was starting to feel better.. she's still sleeping a lot but is starting to be more social too.. so back on the poking ears, chasing greens and haunting FDMB bandwagon
.
