Greetings, LL!

Karre's 27th July Condo

Well, this morning didn't start quite as prettily as we'd like - but first, here's the overview, to see how we got there:

27th July AMPS 4.8/86 --- Shot 0.1u
(+2) 4.5/81
(+3) 4.9/88
(+6) 4.8/86
(+10) 4.9/88
(+11) 5.4/97
PMPS 4.7/85 --- Shot 0.1u
(+2) 4.4/79 --- Yaaay, a visit to the 70s! Let's see how he reacts.
28th July AMPS 6.2/112 --- Shot 0.1u --- Karre had a squabble with another (neighbour's) cat this morning, prior to AMPS. He had some fur still in his mouth, and showed slight signs of stress.
(+2) 7.9/142 --- No, wrong way, Karre! Come back down!!
(+2.5) 7.8/140
(+3) 7.3/131 --- Better. On just a drop of Lantus, I think we can assume Mr. P is pitching in here.

Okay. So the 4.4/79 last night was the lowest he's been in a few days, and even though it's really *not* that low, there's a chance Karre's liver might have overreacted a bit. And then this morning, Karre must have had a run-in with one of the nieghbour's cats. Karre had some of the other cat's fur around his mouth, and seemed a little stressed as Jack took the AMPS. Given that he seems to be coming back down to where we want him to be, I think that's the most likely explanation. Back in 2008, just before (i.e. on 0.1u of Lantus) and even *during* his OTJ Trial Karre had a couple of visits to the 130s, so it's not as though we've never seen this. At 13 months OTJ, we got a reading in the 180s even, and he brought himself back down within a few hours. So it's most likely nothing to worry about, and just Karre teaching us a lesson about secretly going shopping for party shoes. Guess we didn't do it secretly enough!

WCR remains wholly unblemished - all 5 Ps present. We though at first he might have squabbled with Luca, but Luca would never actually injure Karre. They love each other:

So, here's hoping the (+4), and the rest of the cycle, will prove me right!
Happy Caturday, everybody! Cycle well!

Jane

I just won't worry about those little surge. After all Karre has his way of showing his beans, hey you'd better love me more! Is the black & white kitty brother Luca? He's adorable! They are so sweet together.

Re: 28th July - Karre AMPS 6.2/112. Vet re. Wound Check?

Thanks so much for the reassurance, Helen! Even when we beans *know* it's most likely nothing to worry about, we worry anyway, don't we. Karre is proving you right, it seems, with his (+4):

28th July AMPS 6.2/112 --- Shot 0.1u --- Karre had a squabble with another (neighbour's) cat this morning, prior to AMPS. He had some fur still in his mouth, and showed slight signs of stress.
(+2) 7.9/142 --- No, wrong way, Karre! Come back down!!
(+2.5) 7.8/140
(+3) 7.3/131 --- Better. On just a drop of Lantus, I think we can assume Mr. P is pitching in here.
(+4) 6.3/113 --- And better. Now let's see some green for the mid-cycle, Your Majesty!

And yes, Helen, that's Luca in the photos with Karre  He's a total lovebug!

Regarding the squabble Karre must have had this morning: I just discovered a bit of a scratched, fur-less skin on Karre's left flank... It's *extremely* unlikely that Luca would have fought Karre hard enough to give him an injury, even a very minor one... So now we're thinking it must have been one of the neighbour cats. I'm going to make a quick call to the vet and describe what I see, and possibly I'll take Karre in for a little check-up, just in case they want to treat him with some antibiotic ointment or something along those lines. I know the wound and the risk are both small, but I'd rather be overly careful than have him develop a bit of an infection that could mean a setback from his FD-progress. Better safe than sorry, as they say. Calming healing Nothing-to-worry-about-Vines, please!

Unlucky timing had it so that the vet had *just* closed for the day when I called - I had thought they were open longer on Saturdays, but apparently both Saturday and Sunday they're only open between 11am and 12 noon. With Jack's help, we were able to get a proper look at Karre's flank. He has two superficial scratches next to one slightly deeper one (ca. 0.5-1mm). They look typical of the kind of scratches caused by a cat's claws. There is no bleeding, and no sign of crusted blood either. Around the deeper laceration, there is an area of about 1cm² where the fur has been pulled out. The area is tender, but not excessively so. It's clearly a fresh wound. The most likely culprit is the white and brown tomcat from one of the neighbouring properties. (We've seen him trespassing in our garden a few times. Beautiful boy. Still, if he scratched our darling Emperor, he's definitely on my list now.) A run-in like this would explain the stress spike in his BGs. Karre allowed us to clip the fur around the area a bit. We irrigated with sterile saline solution. He's now happily resting in the sunshine again, and is completely relaxed and purring away. He accepted some ostrich meat as a treat. WCR defies the fact that anything happened: if it wasn't for the blue BGs, you'd never know something had happened at all.

We're going to get a mid-cycle BG test as usual, but won't be surprised if he's still a little higher than normal, given the stress of the day he's had. We'll keep a very close eye on the laceration from now until tomorrow morning, and re-assess then. Hopefully, Karre will just do what our cats so far have always done with minor scrapes like this one - sort himself out and heal without problems. If there is *any* sign tomorrow that he's not going to be fine on his own, we'll take him to get checked by the vet.

Poor Karre! But he's so brave, and stoic as always. He *is* royalty, after all.

Sending nothing to worry about vines.

At the last place I lived, there was a neighbor's? cat who would come onto our property and fight my two boys (cats), and after 3 incidents (the last one being J.D. could not walk on his hind legs), I insisted my cats learn to walk on leashes when out doors. I hope your neighbor's cat learns to stay where he belongs.

Does Ostrich taste like chicken?

Thanks for the vines, Dyana! Normally, confrontations between our cats and the ones who live on the surrounding properties on the estate are only vocal, not physical. This is vary rare. It's part of having cats who can come and go as they please, I suppose. Still, the benefits far outweigh the occasional run-in, at least if you ask the cats

Ostrich, although I guess technically poultry, is a red meat. It's got a rich flavour that I think is more like game than chicken or even duck meat. It's sooo yummy!

Hi Jane, sorry to hear about Karre's laceration and the outdoor kitty. I can understand your concern, and I hope all turns out okay. I was wondering if Luca deted the smell of the outdoor kitty that bit Karre and thus their little brotherly squabble. Still very nice numbers, and Karre will be back on track in no time. Sending some vines for his laceration.

Thanks Ann! Yes, that's possible! We're even thinking that it's possible that Karre never had any altercation with Luca at all, and that it was all to do with the other tomcat. That's probably the most likely scenario. Jack thought it may have been Luca because the fur that Karre had in and around his mouth was white, but he never *saw* Luca and Karre squabbling. He saw nothing at all, and the I just discovered the laceration hours later. So most likely, it was just a run-in with the "foreign" tom.

Karre's still relaxed and happy, showing zero signs of residual stress. His (+6) was a perfect green 4.4/79. So hopefully, as you say, he'll be just fine even by tomorrow, and all will be forgotten

Thanks for the visit and the vines!
Jane

Praying the Karre will be okay after his run in with the tomcat. Nice that he reached green today. I love the pictures of Karre and Luca. You have such beautiful cats.

Thanks, Carla! I'll tell them you said so - they love compliments  Hope Furball's curve goes well today!

Oh, and before I forget, there was a question as to how Karre's name is pronounced: It's KAH-REE, like the word "car" and then with an "eee" at the end. My husband Jack named Karre and his brother Lucci (GA) for a well-known pair of mischievous Bavarian folklore figures.

Back for a late-cycle BG. Meanwhile, we've installed a little improvised water-feature "fountain" - mainly because our Coon Kitty, Henry, is making good on his breed's reputation for absolutely loving water... He discovered the delights of running tap water a couple of weeks after he moved in with us, and realized that all it took for that magical drink of choice to start flowing was for him to sit in front of the tap crying to high heaven. Which wouldn't even be a problem, really - if he hadn't now taken to doing so at 5am! So, obedient beans that we are and knowing our place as lowly minions to our feline rulers, out we went this morning to find a suitable little water pump. Then we gathered together some of our large rose quartz crystals for some pretty pink splashes of colour, collected some regular rocks for good measure, and set about putting together a trickly little water bowl fountain, as it were. To test it out, we set it up outside first (and that's where the picture was taken), but of course far be it from us to expect our cats to venture the gruelling seventeen paces towards the catflap, only to have to endure a further twelve steps to their new fountain outside - so now it's in our living room. My, my. They *do* have us well-trained. It's only a matter of time before we replace the water in the fountain with catnip tea

That water fountain is awesome; I love it! Amazing how you put it all together and is a work of art! I came back to add that I forgot to mention I love the pics of the two brothers, so adorable sleeping together.

Thank you, Ann, how sweet of you to say! And I've pleased you like the water fountain  I'll be intrigued to see who tries it out first. Knowing Henry's fondness for simply splashing water about and batting it with his paw, I suspect it'll be him!

And here's the latest update:

I think we can assume it would have been a standard-issue green Karre-Cycle, had it not been for the altercation with the other tomcat. Even so, we'll just give him tomorrow to relax and do whatever he likes, rather than imposing any kind of You-Know-Where thoughts on him. We'll revisit that option early next week.
