28 DAYS AND OTJ

Hi!

Just wanted to let people who understand how we have been feeling that our sugar kitty Roscoe after 28 days is OTJ! We are aware that she could have to go back on insulin, but we are going to try it with diet control. Wish us luck.

There are several opinions I have gotten from vets that it is okay to feed the Purina dm or Hills MD food. Since Roscoe is only 8.8 pounds it would be 3/8 of a cup per day. What is the opinion of my friends here? Also, are the low carbs, shall we say, over the counter foods okay to feed her. She loves the Friskies Mixed Grill and does not like the Purina dm, it's very dry wet food. Any advice is so welcomed.

Personally - and this is just my opinion - but I would steer clear of the Rx foods. Purina DM wet is a low carb food, but has low quality ingredients (and has too much chicken liver to be a good sole source of food), and can be expensive. There is nothing magic about it - Janet and Binky's food charts will show you a lot of alternatives if he gets tired of the same food (and a lot of cats grow to hate the wet DM quite fast!). Regular ol' Fancy Feast and Friskies has lots of better quality, low carb canned food, for example.

So, yes - the over the counter foods are more than fine, they are actually preferred! Just check out the food charts and make sure you keep the carb content low (stay away from gravies, veggies, starches, etc.).

Congratulations! And long may the h*n*ym**n (see note) last!

(Note : That's a bit of old FDMB superstition. We refer to going OTJ as "honeymooning" or "going to the Falls" as a reference to Niagara Falls ... so we do an anti-jinx thing by not spelling it out. )

Roscoe got tired of it very quickly and just would not eat it anymore. She loves loves loves Friskies Mixed Grill and Country Style Dinner!

Did I read correctly that the regular Fancy Feasts were okay. I had checked the Elegant Medley's and I thought those were the ones with low carbs. I printed out that list. I am going to try the Merrick brand this weekend. Have you tried those? If so, do your cats like them?

Thanks for the support and I will not spell the OTJ out at all!

Rita and Roscoe (sugarcat)

*Some* of the regular Fancy Feast (FF) are perfectly acceptable, and quite low in carbs - just stick with pates, and stay away from gravies. If in doubt, check Janet's lists. The Elegant Medleys are nice, too ... just a lot more expensive!

Can't get Merrick where I live, but I'm sure they would like them. They like everything ... except DM. ;-)

Roscoe loves the Merrick food. She loves Cowboy Cookout and Grammy's Pot Pie! I haven't tried the Turducken or the Southern Delight (I'm from the south). She will only get the Thanksgiving Day Dinner once in a blue moon because it has 16 grams of carbs. Maybe just on Thanksgiving Day and that's it!

The DM food just wasn't working for her anymore. Does anyone feed dry if you are going to be gone from home for longer periods at a time, just so they have something to eat and do not go hypo while you are gone?

Rita

There is no dry in my house, if I have to be gone for an extended period of time, I just freeze a can of food, and put it out frozen so Maxwell can nibble on it as it thaws.

I think a lot of folks here either freeze the canned food like I do, or use a timed feeder. But since Maxwell has been OTJ for 6 months now I'm not willing to chance it with so much as a mouthful of dry food, as I'm pretty sure that is what got him where he was before I adopted him...in other words, Diabetic.

Hope that helps.
