Sam seems to be responding much better to the insulin. Maybe leftover drug effect from being under anesthesia? Maybe hitting a better dose? Maybe getting rid of those teeth? Maybe finishing up the antibiotic and getting his stomach under control again?

Whatever the cause, it's so nice to see him hitting better numbers, even if it does mean testing a bit more!

Wonderful news! When they have a bad tooth that needs to come out, it really plays havoc with the BG's and I am so glad the dental is behind you and Sam and that the is eating for you. Hopefully, you will see some better numbers now that bad tooth is gone and his insulin needs will lower. Glad you are home to monitor him.

He's eating well, but he hasn't slept a wink since he came home. I scrolled through the security camera from last night and he barely closed his eyes the entire night. He's still sitting on the bed with his eyes wide open. He's at least resting his chin now which is some progress since he was sitting with his head up the whole night. I'm really worried about him going this long without sleep. The vet said to call back at noon if he's still awake, which is only two hours away.

I've tried kitty calming music, he's in a quiet room, not sure what to do to help a restless kitty sleep.

Sounds like the anesthesia jived him up. Hope he'll close his eyes soon. Does he like to have his belly or head rubbed? Maybe that could help him relax some more and sleep.

He loves having his head rubbed, and that has gotten him to close his eyes, but the second I stop he pops his head up again and stares around like a paranoid stoner! If I try to rub his cute white belly he rips all the skin off my hands. That is actually how we met at the shelter. Silly me trying to rub a kitty's belly! He taught me well that day!

I just did some googling, and it sounds like this isn't all that uncommon. I do hope he'll sleep soon! I would get more work done if I wasn't staring at the monitor seeing if he's closed his eyes yet!

Just got off the phone with the vet and he says that they gave him a pain med after he woke up that stays in the system for 24 hours, and may be the cause of the insomnia. I asked him to pretty please not use that pain med again! It's just a different preparation of the bupe, so I'm thinking this may not be the best med for Sam and will pick up the onsior in a few hours to give him going forward. The vet said the injection should be out of his system in the next few hours and to try not to worry too much since he's eating, drinking, and peeing. Easy for him to say!

It could be that the dose of bupe was too high. Some kitties need more, some less. My experience is that vets often are a bit heavy handed with it. Onsior is a NSAID, I wouldn't use it any more than the 3 days which is the max recommended by the manufacturer.

Here's hoping Sam is snoozing soon.
