Food post

Hello! I'm back! Not such a great thing but oh well.

I recently posted in the main forum about foods for Grem as he was recently diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. BUT... His PS BGL keeps on rising and rising, with in between tests being great! He's on 0.1u of Lantus. This morning he hit yellow! Yellow! :nailbiting: I haven't seen a yellow from him in so long! Unfortunately I'm at work so can't get home to test mid shot.

Full story... He has been regulated for a long, long time until two to three months ago when he became hungrier and started losing weight rapidly, he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and put on medication. Testing a month later showed his hyperthyroid under control. Another month (last week) and and he's getting hungrier and losing weight again so back for tests. Hyperthyroid is still under control and early stage CKD detected as well as a lump where his thyroid gland is. Possibly cancer but no diagnosis as yet. I've since found two more lumps, one on his back and one on his inner thigh.

From what I can tell, he doesn't need more insulin, his hyperthyroid is under control and it's not the food I'm giving him. What could be making his PS BGL rise, as well as making him hungry ALL the time and losing weight?? He's a big cat and he's down to 4.6kg (10.1lb??) last time he was weighed. He's skin and bone :arghh: I don't know what do and I don't think my vet has any idea either.

Unfortunately I'm strapped for money at the moment so heaps of testing isn't viable right now. I've got my civvies both booked in for dentals next month and then I'm in debt. If there is something it definitely could be, I'll manage and get the test done.

Thanks so much for getting through my huge post!

He is looking thin:(
Do you let him eat all he wants?
Have you tried giving him food 3 hours before Preshot. If the pancreas is working it should bring down the numbers. Can you give him some extra food such as cooked chicken thighs (no bones) or breast?

In that photo, I think he was over 5kg. He's lost even more weight since then.

I can't free feed as my other two cats are getting ridiculously fat but I do feed him every hour when I'm home, and as often as possible on work days including two hours before PM shot and once overnight. He's started eating raw chicken breast to supplement his diabetic/CKD diet.

His BGL does come right down in between shots. It's only at pre-shot that it's high which is why I know something else is going on. Plus he's almost eating more that he was just before his hyperthyroid diagnosis! It's a lot!

I don't know what to do :( I'm beginning to think that this is the beginning of the end for my Gremmy boy.

I think I might need to buy a second auto feeder when I have the money. Either that or I need to start racing home during my lunch break every day and then race back to work again. Not something I want to be doing at the moment as I'm suffering from (unexplained so far) fatigue and a herniated disc in my back. We're a household full of sickies! :banghead:

Houston, we have a problem... PMPS 320 (17.8), we've hit PINK!
I'll retest tonight before I go to bed. Hopefully I'll be able to stay awake until +3

I'm so sorry. With the lumps and losing weight, it does sound like cancer is a possibility. I hope you can figure out what is going on with Grem and it's not cancer. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks so much Carla!
I really hope it's not cancer too.
Would cancer make his BGL rise though?
Ahh, who knows, anything is possible. Just being unwell makes it rise. Fingers crossed!

It's hard to say. I think it could go up or down. Are you going to get any bloodwork done to try and figure out what is going on with him?

He's already had blood work run. That's how we found the hyperthyroidism and early stage CKD. My vet suggested an x-ray as the first thing to do. This would be to check for abnormalities that would point to cancer.

Good luck!! Everyone else has suggested what I thought. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Could it be possible to keep him in a room with food, water, and a litter box while you are working so you don't need to rush home at lunch to feed him?

Looks like I'll have to increase his insulin to cope with these way jumped up numbers! 247 at +3 :arghh: I'm devastated! Considering before this started, he was off insulin again and almost in remission.

Unfortunately he's outside during the day and always has been. I can't leave food outside as he either eats it straight away (I do this anyway, he's currently having three meals in the morning before I leave - all in about an hour) or the crows eat it. He sleeps in the garden across the road and I'm not sure he would hear the auto feeder to come home for food. I have it silent as I use it overnight which is why I thought maybe I should get another one. His feeding arrangement has been like this for a long time and has always been fine. Also, I can't lock him in a room, he's like a dog and would destroy the door to get out! If I just knew the cause, hopefully I could fix it. My guess is it's cancer and it's aggressive to have this effect. He's not himself and he's losing weight so rapidly.

And thank you!

Any chance Gremlin found anneighbouring source for high carb crunchies? More than one cat here has been caught with their paw in a next door dry food bowl.

Have you tried feeding him higher calorie food like kitten food?

If he had, he's have been doing it every day. There's too many dogs in this neighbourhood, I think, for him to even try. Plus all the symptoms coincide with each other and all point to his diabetes NOT being the underlying issue.

I haven't tried kitten food. I'm not sure what's out there that is low carb for diabetes and low phosphorus for CKD. Although at this stage I don't think the CKD will matter much, it's early stage and what ever is happening to him, it's happening fast.

P.S. It's lovely to hear from everyone again! Bron, Carla and Wendy. It's been too long.
