He wants to play with the sharks and I have to leave in 30 minutes for an appointment. I gave him a carbed up lunch 15 minutes ago.

Note to self: bypass the LC to steer - go right for the HC!
 
Oh course he would play with the sharks today when you have an appointment. Teasel, the nice numbers you are giving Momma today get over-shadowed but having to leave you. Behave!

I don't know the %, Tanya. It was one of the Friskies types with gravy in it ("Turkey and Cheese Dinner in Gravy"). I don't worry too much about exact percentages. His regular food is LC pate and I keep a supply of gravy/sauce types in the cupboard. When I want MC I mix LC and HC half and half. I think I'd go crazy keeping track of several types with several different % carbs. That's just me - always trying to reduce the variables down to the essentials. ;)
 
No, he's not extremely carb sensitive. I've had to use this type of food before when he was too low and a teaspoon didn't prop him up very long. I ended up adding a little honey to a second teaspoon and that worked. Today, the LC I gave him after I saw he was dropping at +2.25 didn't do much to slow him down. That might have put a carb sensitive cat into a surf.

Every cat differs in carb sensitivity as well as insulin response. That's one of many things that makes this such a challenge. As I said above I try to simplify as much as I can so - only two types of food in my cupboard and honey to add if he needs higher carbs.
 
I am just trying to understand your feeding schedule and tactics for the days he is lower and you have be out.
How often do you feed Teasel, normally? And in what amounts?
The +2.25 LC - was it his regularly scheduled meal, or did you give it as extra because you knew he was lowering?

His normal routine is: larger LC breakfast (about 3/4 of 6 oz. can), smaller LC lunch (about 1/3 of 6 oz. can) around +5, larger LC supper (a little over 1/2 of 6 oz. can), bedtime snack around +2 or +3 (about 1/3 of 6 oz. can). There's no free feeding here because I have three cats who eat different wet food.

When I saw him going lower by +2.25 this AM, I gave him about 1 Tbsp LC hoping to keep him from going too low. It didn't work though so at +4 I gave him his lunch but made it half LC and half HC (14%) because I knew I had to go out. I did another test at +4.5 to check where he was (BG of 83) and to be safe I decided to give an extra teaspoon of HC (14%). This was something I was figuring out in a rush as I went along and it worked - luckily!

Thanks, Tanya! I was just lucky because I haven't been stuck like this before. My appointment was at +5 and I couldn't change it or skip it. I live alone so there's no one else to do all this. I crossed all my fingers and toes that he would be OK but not go too high. Now I'm waiting for his big bounce!
