Thank you for the advice about ketones. The clear explanations really brought it home to me what I'm trying to now achieve with Sid. I thought it was regulation, but now I see it is balance with enough food/insulin to combat the ketones. I understood before that food and insulin were important - but I didn't make the connection with raising the insulin a bit and combating low numbers with food. Part of the reason I didn't get that I think is because I was also trying to avoid him going too low to keep him from rebounding so high.

I think the focus on regulation is part of the reason Sid ended up in the hospital 3 times - because the specialist had that as the goal. Telling me to only feed him 2x day- I know he is wrong about that!! I'm honestly not sure that regulation is possible with Sid at this point due to the other conditions he has. I think we'll be pretty lucky if he doesn't end up in DKA again.

So far the IM shot seems to be working. I gave Sid .8 Prozinc this morning and I came home at lunch to check him and he was in the 150s. Then tonight he was high at PMPS - 500+ so I gave him 1U of Prozinc - probably should have given 1.25 -oh well I will next time. Right now at +4 he is around 200. I'd like him to be lower so I will see how he does for a couple more checks and maybe tomorrow evening I will give him a bit more insulin because I will home to watch him. I am glad to know with Prozinc I can vary the dose a little. That will help. (I hope.) I did update his SS for today and yesterday and shaded in the days he was in the hospital the last 2 times - it's a start!

Lucky for me I know so many good beans on this group who are offering advice and kind thoughts for Sid. :-D
Thank you everyone!!

Lydia, you're doing a great job with Sid. Trying to sort out all this information (and misinformation from people who should know better) is a huge challenge. We are fortunate to have found LL and all the caring people here. Big hugs!

Hi Lydia & Sid,
It sounds like you are getting a handle on everything, Lydia. Yes, we are very lucky here to have such knowledgeable friends to help us. I hope that Sid will have a good night and that you will be able to get some good sleep in, too.

Lots more healing vines are on the way,

Many hugs,

Ella & Rusty

Focus on beefing him up. When that happens the ball will be rolling in the right direction again.
Pack him with as many calories as you can and let those evil ketones know you've got insulin - and you know to use it!
put regulation in the back of your mind for now - first things first.

How many calories do you think he's getting in a 24 hour period Lydia?
does he get fluids?

Have you ever looked at Garlands ss - Violet used an additional row under each days bgs to keep track of feeding times and amounts - might help you to do so.
At the very least it will keep folks like me from constantly asking how much he ate ;-)

sending more healing vines your way. . .
