Moonie has been not well for a while now We are snowed in and cant get anywhere right now--Last night she couldnt poop so i tried to help with some ky & finger cot over a q tip & just put it in a little bit-She did poop.
Today this am I gave her her shot & she sort of fell over, like she was dizzy, but after a few seconds got up and was fine.
She was ok all day after that, ate, and drank during the day, but didnt eat a lot.. Tonite she is straining to go, so much that she threw up before..now she keeps going to the litter box with no help--Right now the roads are so bad & we cant get to vet..I dont know if I should try again with the ky or give her an enema, which totally freaks her out..Please help if you have any advice..
Her numbers today were AMPS 185, +4~100, +7~117,PMPS 297
Sorry I would not do this if it were not important.

roni, i've never given a cat an enema so i know nothing about it.
do you have any hair ball gel? my brianna gets constipated and a healthy sized strip of hair ball gel (maybe a 1 - 1.5 inch strip) gets her moving within hours. is there any reason moonie shouldn't be given hair ball gel? given the circumstances, i'd also try the k-y/cot/q-tip again.

(((((hugs)))))

When was her last bloodwork?
Does she seem dehydrated? Could she be anemic?
Can you "feel" any poo in her? The vets can palpate for that, but I've never tried it.

vines and prayers...

Have no hairball meds they all were lost in the hurricane, along with everything else--Thank you so much for answering this I am pretty upset..Trying the Q-tip & finger cot now--I never gave a cat an enema either!! vet gave it to me & showed me how, but I never had to--Besides if anyhting bad happened, I'd rather it be tomorrow when we can get out of here to some vet..Trying to help her now.

I am so sorry that Moonie is not feeling well. Good luck with the QTip and finger cot, I really hope it helps her. Will be sending poo vines.

Hugs, and healing vines.

((Roni)) I don't want to tell you to do an enema, but based in my recent experience of giving Ripley a home enema, it helped her constipation almost instantly. It did take 2 of us, though - 1 to hold, the other to administer. We used the feline Pet-ema (I believe it was 6oz). Within 30 secs. She used the LB, and several more times over the next 1/2 hour. She did vomit a couple of times, but that's to be expected. It wasn't nearly as bad/messy/stressful as I had thought it would be. I'm sorry you and Moonie are going through this. It's stressful, especially since you are snowed in.

I'm sending positive thoughts and love your way!

from the link marje posted:

Instead of a glycerine suppository, you can try dipping the end of a Q-tip in liquid glycerine, thoroughly saturating it. Then gently and carefully insert the saturated Q-tip into the rectum and remove it, repeating three or four times. This will not only lubricate the passage but stimulate the voiding reflex.

does anyone know if roni could use k-y instead of glycerine in the treatment above?

roni, good info for you:

Understanding the construction of the anus will make the job of inserting a suitable and suitably lubricated object, whether a suppository or a thermometer, into a cat's anus much easier. The anus has not one but two sphincters. You could think of this as a storm porch on the back of the house. The outer sphincter is under voluntary control, the inner sphincter is not. Normally all traffic is one-way which means the anus does not expect traffic in reverse, something coming in rather than going out, so initially it is a bit of a surprise. Gentle steady pressure causes the outer sphincter to relax, to 'answer the door'. The cat also appreciates this approach. No one wants someone to come busting through the door when a polite but insistent knocking will result in a warmer welcome.

A cold object causes involuntary muscle contraction so prewarm a thermometer, just enough to take the chill off but not enough to affect its reading.

Remember to talk with your cat. Show your cat what you plan to use and explain why and what you plan to do. Talk as from one adult to another, which this relationship is after all. Your cat is an intelligent being and while not every word will be understood, cats pick up on our intent and our intent informs our action. If we think, for instance, that taking a temperature or using a micro-enema requires us to 'shove something up a cat's ass,' that is exactly what we will do with predictably negative results. If, instead, we imagine using gentle steady pressure and visualize gliding in smoothly, that is more likely to happen because our movements will follow. It is far easier to work with a cooperative cat; take the time to elicit cooperation. Cooperation is the kinder and safer approach.

oh, sweet Moonie, I'm so sorry. I've never dealt with kitty constipation to that point, so I'm pretty useless. It sounds like you've got some good ideas and I don't blame you for not wanting to do the enema until tomorrow. I remember when my kids were little, one of the pediatricians recommended massage and I remember some of our patients used to have them for the same reason. I don't know if it works for kitties or not, though.

Prayers and hugs -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Couldnt get it in very far but did about 1" she went to LB but only water came out..
Dont have any glycerin, but DH said I should leave her alone for a while-she looks miserable...
I found lots of litter in there though!! She sits down in the LB when she strains and her legs, well you know she has neuropathy, dont hold her as well as they did..Will see what happens==
I gave her lactulose at 7pm. and syringed her prednisolone & pepcid around 9...
Poor thing gets so much done to her..My heart is breaking for her.
What next?

Roni, so sorry you & Moonie has to go through this.
I beleive a warm hot water bottle to warm up her tummy & her back the area near her tail part helps to relax her.
Sending healing vines to Moonie!

And since you dont have Hairball remady, I often heard from here that petroleum gel helps with hairball. Do you have that at home?
Anybody has experience on this?

I've got nothing to add except maybe try to relax yourself... breathe... imagine yourself continuing the process
successfully.
The vet showed you how before your DH left. Try to visualize it and copy his actions.
Wishing you success and calming vines.
Prayers for you guys... always!
Hugs!

Has anyone suggested you join the yahoo group for megacolon? I am positive you can get some good suggestions from them. I don't know how quickly you can get accepted, but you can apply and see if you can get in quickly.

I know that just warm water enemas may be enough to loosen a mild blockage, and they did help Oliver a bit, but he's got megacolon and it's taken much more to keep him semi-regular. Using a bit of dish soap can also be used but it's much more harsh.... starting with just warm water may be just enough.

Spoke to ER vet-said he cant tell us to use the enema as things could happen, & he cant commit to that advice..We will go in the morning hopefuly to our own vet 7 miles away, who is in for 1 hour tomorrow or if need be to ER vet about 15 miles away...Please pray for Moonie ~~ She isnt eating or drinking now..I will stay up with her tonite & will syring feed her food & water.. Just tried giving her water & she fought, dosent like to be hugged..I am so upset=Please say prayers for her..and us!

i have nothing to offer but prayers and poo vines

Go easy on the food..... putting more into the cat when nothing's coming out..... watch for vomiting as it's not a great sign when constipated.

Best of luck at the vet tomorrow.

(((((((Roni, Moonie)))))))

I just Googled "glycerin" and the Wikipedia article states that it is used in personal, water-based lubricants, so I'm pretty sure you can continue to use the KY jelly. (I think Jill asked about this earlier.) I am so sorry that our Moonie is having this problem. The snowstorm is a huge factor and I hope and pray that you will be able to get to your vet or to the ER first thing tomorrow. I wish I could be there to help, but I know that you and Brad are experts when it comes to helping your sweet kitty. The hot-water bottle or heating pad is a sensible idea, as is hairball gel (you can use vaseline)--anything to get the intestinal tract moving. Have you considered plain yogurt with active cultures? How far are you from a grocery store? Those are the only ideas I have, but just want you to know that we are right there with you.

We are sending many prayers and strong poop vines for dear Moonie tonight.

And lots of love and BIG HUGS,

Ella, Edward and Rusty

Oh poor Moonie! I would call you vet to let her know that you need to bring Moonie in tomorrow. She seems to really care about Moonie and I'm sure she would do her best to accommodate you especially w/ the storm messing every thing up.

I have given enemas to Cleo (GA) and it really isn't as bad as it seems. What are you worried about happening? It isn't much different than what you were doing w/ the KY and you don't need to use the whole thing. The site Jill quoted is very good. The biggest thing is to be calm and gentle.

Hi Roni,
Just catching up with Moonie and you, as I wasn't on much yesterday. Sending healing vines, poo vines and prayers for Moonie. Mags just went thru a bout of four days constipation with her UTI. I realize Moonie needs more help as she hasn't been eating, so what helps Maggie won't apply. I've never given Mags an enema. I don't remember if you have also been adding Miralax! For Maggie's Megacolon/chronic constipation, I need to give her Miralax daily, several doses spread thru the day, along with the doses of Lactulose. She also gets fluids which really helps her have a poo. I wonder if you could ask the Vet if adding a Miralax maintenance, along with the lactulose, would help Moonie stay regular. So sorry you are snowed in and hope it is cleared this morning. All our love and prayers go out to you and Moonie.

I am hoping you get an appointment with your vet this morning, and I'm sending poo vines to Moonie, and hugs to you.
