I am really concerned at her plus five, because that is typically her nadir. She has had 2.5 cans spread out over amps and plus three, which I did not get a reading. But she was drinking lots of water and when I just tested got 300, checked again and it was 313. Here is the problem. I now am pretty sure she got no insulin this morning. She had her dose increased last night to 7 u. And I am sick with the flu and my own bs has been in the HI range, which is over 500 for my meter. I didn't want to mess with the syringe this am because I feel so bad so I used a pen cap needle instead. Well after that reading I tested the solo star pen using pen cap needle, clicked in 7 units and nothing came out when I pushed the button. I tried three times and I do know how to use them because I used to use pen insulin for myself. What should I do? I'm really worried she is going to skyrocket today. I know she didn't get it but should I give her a syringe dose now?
Thanks, I'm so worried

Edited, vet hasn't called back. I'm am thinking maybe giving her one unit of my novolog, which is a rapid insulin, not going to do so until I here back from vet or from someone here.

i wouldn't reshoot, elizabeth. it sucks when you think they haven't gotten the full dose, but just in case some went in, you just don't want to risk it. you're also already halfway to her next shot and if you shoot now, you're way off schedule.

in the future, though, i don't think you want to use the pen needles. my understanding is that they aren't nearly as accurate as the syringes.

this happens sometimes. just count it a furshot, save strips for the rest of this cycle, and take care of yourself. Mary Grace will be high for a bit, but she'll get back on track. :YMHUG:

just saw your edit about the Novolog. I have no experience with that, so can't say. it would be important to know what the duration in a cat's body could be expected to be if you were going to use it. If it's out of her body by the next shot time, it might be a possibility, but how would you know what to dose?

when we have people use Novolin R or Humulin R, we have them start with 0.1u. In some cats, one-tenth of a unit is enough to move them significantly. Giving her 1u might be enough to make her plummet. A cat that drops 100ish points an hour will often bounce from the speed of the drop, and that can set up a bouncing zig-zag cycle. I don't know if that would happen with the Novolog or not, but the potential would make me nervous.

honestly, i know it's hard to have high numbers but i think your best bet is to just wait it out.

Perhaps a good option is to give her evening shot early. If you do, then tomorrow morning's shot is due 12 hrs later, so you'll have to think how you get to your regular schedule by monday morning. Maybe a couple of slightly longer cycles would get you there.

Good Morning ~O)

Being that you do not know if any insulin got into your kitty my recommendation is do not give any insulin.

7u is a sizable dose therefore she has a sizable depot.
Think of it as a 'fur-shot' - your kitty will be OK.

Better a day too high than an hour too low.

Okay thanks Julie, when I saw you were online, I gave a sigh of relief. Just concerned that she will get into the HI status and it will take awhile to get back down. I have tossed the pen needles in disgust. I had them left over from when I used them.
I'm am all worked up and that's not helping me any, I have bolused myself five times since 3am and my sugar will not come down, so we will be hi together. @-)
Thanks Julie, I will remove the question mark. Hope you have a good day

aw, you have a good day too. at least you won't need to worry about her going low.

The pen needles are good for one thing - i got just 2 and hung on to them. If you develop bubbles of air within the pen, you can put on a pen needle, turn the pen so the needle points up. flick the pen to make the bubble rise to the top, then dial in a "dose" and click it to push out the air. might have to do that a couple of times.

snuggle up with a blankie, a good book and some soup and take care of yourself. :YMHUG:

we're snowed in here - day 3. i'm a bit stir-crazy.
