2/7 Zelda - AMPS 92 / +2 122 / +10 169 / PMPS 230

Question for everyone - is it common (or at least not unheard of) for the night curves to be consistently lower than the day ones?

Just thinking now that the insulin dose is so minuscule maybe we're starting to see more of her natural metabolism at work. Perhaps sleeping most of day and expending very little energy keeps the BG a little higher but at night she's more active so it's lower? Just speculating...

Most cats do go lower at night. That's why we always recommend one more test after PMPS to see if a pajama party is in the cards.

So maybe more food at night than during the day rather than 50/50? Last night she only ate 1.5 cans because her tummy seemed upset. Typically she eats 2 cans twice a day. Maybe I should push her to only do 1-1.5 during the day and 2 at night.

speaking of which, her calorie count relative to weight is absurd. I'm not even sure whether the 400 calories are necessary to maintain her weight or they're just literally going nowhere. Or if they're artificially inflating her insulin requirements. Maybe we should try to stick to 3 cans a day for awhile? 1 during the day and 2 overnight?

How old is she? Is she quite active? That seems like a lot of calories for 7lbs. Are you able to weigh her to tell if she is gaining or losing? If she isn't gaining, then she needs it!

14 years old. Not very active.

I weigh her often. Fluctuates between 7 and 7.5 since last July.

It's an absurd amount of food. Every vet I tell, they just shrug.

I would love for her to be more like 8-9. She used to be over 12 (thank you Hills Perfect Weight). Was looking into adding an egg yolk to her fancy feast but of course that has a small amount of carbohydrate.

I encourage you to do that. I give dried egg yolk to all my cats and it really made their fur soft. It also helps with gut motility. Try it.

ETA: Do not add a whole egg yolk. That would give her diarrhea. Give like a tsp.

Cool beans Do you ever do raw or always cooked? I feel like she'd like raw more. (I always get organic and/or pasteurized so I eat 'em raw myself :) )

I think her favorite meal would be steak tartare - raw chopped beef with an egg on top!

You can check to see what she likes. Raw? Hard boiled yolk? Scrambled? I am not sure about the egg whites, though.

I read ideally not to let them have raw whites:

https://www.catster.com/lifestyle/cat-health-can-cats-eat-eggs-ask-a-vet-food-tips
"Raw eggs, however, are special — sort of. Yes, they can contain bacteria. But egg whites also contain a protein called avidin, which binds biotin (also known as vitamin B7). Overconsumption of avidin could cause biotin deficiency. Cooking denatures the avidin. Therefore, it is recommended that cats consume only cooked eggs."

It would be neat because I like to use whites for baking so now I wouldn't have to waste the yolks. :)

Maybe I'll give her some of my scrambled eggs next time and take it from there.

Needless to say, any other weight gaining suggestions that aren't going to destroy her digestive or endocrine systems would be welcome too!

+10 169. Was stuck getting the car fixed all afternoon otherwise I would've rather had closer to mid-day.

Very curious to see PMPS. That lancing device is really becoming useless though.

I didn't much like the lancing device. I keep the lancet in it, but don't use the mechanism.

PMPS 230

It's so bizarre. It's like she's on a 24 hour cycle with an early morning nadir - despite receiving injections twice a day.

She did get a small raw beef treat 1.5 hours ago after that test. But that shouldn't affect BG should it?

I'd love to see Zelda's numbers after PMPS - a 2+ could be very telling of things to come in that cycle. We try to get 2+ and 3 or 4+ after the injections - just to see where Miss Luci is headed...often not where I'd like for her to be headed...it's very beneficial to look back at your SS and see the trends (of course don't look at Luci's SS for trends)...she refuses to be predictable in any way...keeps us guessing all the time...

We free hand here - that lancet device just made noise and wasn't helpful at all - I use a warmed rice filled baby sock to support her ear and just give her a little poke to get that drop - she started purring this morning after the poke...ah, yes...time for food! :)

I'd rather like to see what's going on smack in the middle of the night. Pretty sure nothing remarkable is going on right now.

I just had a realization. I do the ear antibiotic at night. Could that be the X factor - the antibiotic is helping LOWER the BG by attacking the infection? If so then green might be her natural state right now and during the day is under the influence of the infection?

Incidentally I just looked it up and Baytrill is supposed to be twice daily, not once (as I was directed). No wonder it's not going away. It's amazing how I have to independently verify FREAKIN EVERYTHING EVERY VET TELLS ME. I'm gonna try applying tomorrow morning and see if it makes a difference in BG.
