So he got a fur shot last night and is high this morning. Am hoping he will come down soon.

There is another thing though. Ever since he was a kitten he was kinda clumsy on his feet but we attributed that to furry feet, kitten craziness and hardwood floors. He looks like he has maine coon in him (although he isnt a pedigree or anything) so he has fur between his feet. And he has always walked a little odd - with a swing in his hips. Anyway when he was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago we noticed his walk had gone worse - he would struggle to get up the stairs. He sits down a lot. And this hind leg weakness gets worse when he has high BG.

So with the diagnosis of diabetes, the vet and we assumed it was neuropathy. But I tried methylcobalamin and it didnt help. And he never really looked like it was neuropathy - he never walks on his hocks or anything like that. So I was always kinda suspicious. Then a few days ago I notice he has developed a click when he walks (even on carpet). I googled it and one of the causes is hip dysplasia. Common in maine coons.

So what do you think? Does it sound like dysplasia? It causes inflammation too so could that be triggering the diabetes?

I'd send a PM to CD. She's had a lot of Maine Coons and is very familiar with the breed. You can also get x-rays to know for sure.

Hi guys sorry about the fur shot. Not sure about hip dysphasia but I would def pm CD. Scrabble is part Maine coon too I thnk. I have noticed arthritis in the last year and started him on dasuquin a month or so ago and it seems to help. Scrabble has very furry feet too. Hope you get all the answers you need, paws crossed! All my dysplasia experience is with dogs but this sounds like it could be it. Would take xray to see if that's what it is - unless it's terribly out of socket, it really can't be felt well to diagnose. Even if it is, the body will remold the area to accept the new position altho' it can be painful for a bit. It takes about 2-3 months for a dog to 'remodel'....

i think he has had it for years... wouldnt it have remodelled by now?

Hi Wendy. Sorry that Tiggy is struggling. Big cats often do have issues with hip dysplasia. I wish I could offer some suggestions other than getting X-rays. The breeder I got my Maine Coons from was pretty careful about not breeding any kitties with hip dysplasia so I have not had any experience with it. That was not a guarantee ... but they do their best and if they see problems with a sire or dam, they take them out of the breeding pool. Mixed kitties aren't so lucky since the parents are not usually screened.

I had some concerns with Mackie my young MC (8 months). At 2 months old, my vet thought his knees were loose and so we needed to monitor him but he seemed to have grown into the joints. His 'knees' are stronger now but if this had continued we would have been concerned about hip problems as he matured into adulthood.

Perhaps Tiggy's clumsy kitten behavior was a similar thing. It is hard to tell with kittens because they are so silly. Like you, I see that Mackie is a little clumsy on the hardwood floors.

I guess the only thing I learned from my vet (if Mackie was headed for joint problems) was to keep his weight down to lessen the stress on the joints. We didn't get any further than that since it became a non-issue. I vaguely recall the vet saying that just under 20% of MC get hip dysplasia so I was worried.

Since I recently had my hip replaced, I was very concerned that my kitten might be headed that way too - so I was greatly relieved when he was given the all clear dx. nailbite_smile
I wish I could help you more. But from what you described, it does sound possible. I think there are treatments to relieve some of the discomfort and make sure Tiggy's activities are not too curtailed. And then there are more invasive treatments such as hip surgery.

It may have slipped further this time - the 'remodel' usually just pulls it closer by the muscles rearranging themselves around the change of structure. It can continue to 'slip' as it's used, jumped on, etc. We've gone thru one 'remodel' with our pug that was 'blessed' upon us in May last year but I noticed yesterday that it's sort of popping again. I let her get a bit heavier by about 3/4ths a pound which I hope is causing this - she's on a diet...poor old sweet baby....

My newfie mix had his slip 4 different times before he had to quit using it - he just lifted it when it got painful. I finally lost him when the other hip couldn't take it and slipped too. This took place over many years...

Hmm, do you have them on cosequin? I am wondering about trying that.

Got no answer on hip dysplasia in feline. Cats in Hongkong are basically smaller built. Hope you find out the cause soon & help Tiggy to get better.
