My vet told me to lay off testing Theo or else he would stop being a living, trusting guy so... I did. But today I felt like I should really test him before the shot... Thank goodness I did because he was at 74! I can only imagine what might have happened if I shot him and then went to school for the day.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74

Next time ask him if his child was diabetic would he give insulin without testing first? Bet the answer would be no so why is your furry baby any different?

Really glad you listened to your inner voice this morning. :-D. And I bet Theo is even happier you did.

Now for a little story time. I have 3 diabetic kitties all of which I adopted after they were already diabetic. These cats didn't know me from a whole in the wall when I first started testing, yet right now one is sleeping on my lap, one is curled up against my side and the other one is chasing my ball of yarn that I was just crocheting with... Now two of these cats are tested at the very least 4 times a day now and in the beginning upto 8 times a day. All 3 sleep in my bed draped all over my husband and I. Untrusting and unloving I so don't think so !!!

However my very first girl I gave insulin to and listened about not testing and her grave is in my rose garden.

Oh here's a picture for your vet of a Sugarcat that has been tested for 3 years sometimes multiple times by multiple people because he goes with me to not only teach people to test their kitties but once a month he goes see little kids with diabetes to see that blood testing is no big deal..Because how scary can it be if this cute fluffy kitty cat can have it done without batting an eye. lol

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74

So glad you listened to your gut today Arienne! I have a story too. Not with my current cat Max, but with another cat that I had that was diabetic and before I found this board and new about home testing. Anyway, we had a major hypo incident and had to rush to the ER, 2-day stay in the animal hospital, and a substantial vet bill. Every time my mom asks me if I have to test so much, I remind her of that one time. I'm training her to test, so she can help me with Max while I'm out of town. This board has really made such a difference in how I care for Max. His #'s are so much better and he's safer.

@MommaOfMuse - gorgeous pic of Maxwell (is it?). Those kids are lucky to have such a great example of how to test.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

That is low...You didn't shoot this morning right ? If not you might want to retest and make sure it's not meter error.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

I did not shoot this morning... He did have a light breakfast though. I'll retest him in an hour and if it's still low, should I plan on staying up late?

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

I would definitely get a before bed check and of course no insulin for Mr Theo tonight..If he has dropped this low simply off his shed he may well be on his way to remission. At the very least he's earned himself a dose reduction.

Really really really glad you tested this morning. And I think I'd send these numbers to your vet and let him know if you'd followed his direction you'd have a dead cat right now.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

I actually called them this morning and gave them the results and let them know that I wasn't going to be giving him his am shot. I didn't push the dead cat thing but... gee'z. :( It took me about an hour to realize how close we got to a devastating result. I swing home between classes a lot to check in on him but I had a solid four hours of back to back classes and lab meetings.

I still have cans of Fancy Feast Grilled poultry stuff - think it'd be okay to give him something with a little gravy?

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

Give him just a little bit like a teaspoon of the gravy..If he's in remission a tiny bit not gonna hurt him and will help off set that shed. If he eats comes up and drops back down on his own you might have a working pancreas. :-)

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

Oh man! This is hopeful... Theo started showing symptoms of diabetes back in October after his first steroid shot. I didn't know what it meant but I did mention to the vet that he was drinking and peeing a LOT and he'd lost a couple lbs. It was enough that the vet ordered blood tests but still gave him a second steroid shot. Within two days he was in DKA. Scariest moment I've had in a long time. It was a ridiculously expensive hospital stay and I know we've got good chances of remission if this is mostly due to the steroids. :/ But I was told it could be up to five weeks for the steroids to work through his system and it's been two and a half weeks.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

What was he on steroids for if you don't mind me asking? My guy that's been OTJ for 3+ years we believe was steroid induced. He's asthmatic. And we think he was treated with steroids for it while in the shelter after hurricane katrina.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

He was itchy! Some allergy we couldn't identify... Although I'm told switching him to the low carb wet food now might help. His dandruff cleared right up! But I won't be able to tell until the steroids are out of his system.

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

I had a civie like that he was living on pred. He would tear up his face..Then we adopted Maxwell put the whole family on the low carb grain free diet and he never itched again. Sadly we lost him to cancer a year ago in November. He was 18

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36

He just gnawed huge swatches of his fur off. :( He looked so sad and silly with his naked butt and belly and legs. Gave himself an infection from the bacteria on his skin being forced in.

Well definitely not meter error. How's he acting overall? Can you leave food down for him? Or set an alarm to check in on him throughout the night?

Mel and The Fur Gang

He's himself, but in a bit of a mood. He's objecting to being moved off my lap and keyboard with more irritability than usual but not outside the bounds of him when he's in a mood. He's eaten about half his food and he didn't clear his breakfast plate though he ate most of it. He's eating his freeze-dried chicken liver with enthusiasm and is coming running to the testing station when I shake them - though vocally annoyed at the testing. I can definitely leave food out tonight and check him as often as you suggest. I wouldn't like to because I have a challenging structural analysis class tomorrow and a design meeting, but I could sit vigil over the Theo-cat tonight if I have to.+

I would leave him some chow down for the night. Does he sleep with you? If he does maybe take his test kit with you and set an alarm to check him again at +6 He shouldn't be able to hypo without insulin. I'll be watching tomorrow to see where he comes in in the morning.

And my phone will alert me if a new post comes in tonight. And I'll check in.

*hugs!* Thanks Mel, that's a real good idea. He sleeps with me all night and makes sure to escort me to the bathroom so I don't get eaten by a monster. :) It should be easy to give him a quick vampire kiss at +6.

Sound like my Autumn. Now Maxwell will just take over my warm spot and Casey would rather go cuddle will Angel and Arabella. Which is fine by them since they have mooned over him from day one. lol

Re: 2/6 Theo AMPS 74 PMPS 36 +1 38 +3 40

40! We are at 40! Woo... Alright, I think we're trending sloooowly upward and I'm going to risk taking a nap. We'll do this again at 4 or 5. Thank you for all your help, Mel. I hope your sleep is restful. ^_^

phone died but just woke up when it beeped at me to change it so I'm checking in. Hope you got some sleep..Seeya in the morning.

Your SS mentions that you are feeding DM?? if its what I think it is, that is not low enough in carbs. Please advise exactly what food he is getting.

Plus, prescription food from the vet is super expensive!

Hey Linda :) Theo had a two cans of DM and a small amount of DM dry from the vet 'cause they'd send me home with it. When he was DKA we were testing and injecting him with tiny amounts humulin N on a much shorter clock (trying to control hisBG AND dangerously low Potassium levels) and back then the goal was to get him to eat ANYTHING. Now he eats a regular diet of Friskies Classic Pate and FF Classic Pate. Yesterday though he had one can of the FF grilled chicken and FF grilled beef in the morning and then at night... I don't know why I fed it to him in the morning with his 74 BG because generally it's considered to carby for him to eat, but I had it laying around and I felt like it was what he should eat. Just like I really felt like I should test him that morning instead of putting it off like my vet had suggested. That night with his test results being 36 and 38 I fed him another can of the slightly carby grilled stuff. But now that we're out of the Hypo Danger Zone (next time I'd rather have the Hippo Danger Zone) he's back on his FF Classic and Friskies Classic.
