Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS

Good Morning Claudia and Rocket-
Im very sorry to hear about the results. :YMHUG: Tho Im glad you know what you are dealing with, rather than continuing to wonder. That wondering mind can really do a number on us!

I dont know if it helps to share my experience with Latte, but I can...just in case.

Latte had Acute Renal Failure, then crf. After a few yrs we did a u/s because her crf was stable, but she was not eating for a VERY long time. I syringe fed for a year despite being on all the possible medications for nausea, appy stim, etc. The u/s revealed IBD and/or lymphoma, along with possible chronic pancreatitis. We did not do a biopsy to determine because of her condition and the risks involved. I waited it out a bit until we had an emergency one night. That is when she got her first dose of steroid (dex shot, followed by daily pills). It took a few weeks, but huge improvements were seen. She then became diabetic (from the steroid). At that point I had to make a decision to pts, or restart the steroid, knowing I was going to keep her diabetic for the rest of her life. It was really a hard call for me. When stopping the pred proved to be life threatening, I restarted. She spent the remainder of her life (almost 10 months) on the steroid. It certainly did cause a headache with the diabetes. But generally her QOL was good.

I know you are worried about how it might affect his kidneys, BG's, etc. I was too. But the alternative of losing Latte didnt feel right either. I cant say my decision to use the steroid was a good or bad one. Its what I chose after much contemplation, and many talks with her. It gave us a total of 14 extra months together. Tho stressful at times, it was worth it. I think if you could talk with her 'spirit' she may just say the same thing. ;-) No one can guarantee how much MORE time a steroid would give you and Rocket together. But it could make the remaining time, no matter how short or long, much better quality.

many hugs to you two in your journey together.

ETA: Also keep in mind, ecid...for some cats, steroids do very little 'damage' to BG's. In some, it will even help their bg's improve if high, because they start feeling better. One never knows!

Good morning guys ... we will continue to send positive thoughts and prayers your way ...

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS

At least Rocket is enjoying his chickie dust - take every little positive to heart. I'm sending more prayers for both of you. ((((Claudia))))

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS

thanks Carolyn for sharing your experience...much appreciated

i talked to the IM vet to give her an update on Rocket and i'm to call back on Monday and speak with the neuro to let him know how the tremors are (he is not in today)...so most likely we will start the pred on Monday night...

i also contacted his reg vet...and i spoke to the vet tech who told me they do not come home to help kitties cross...they would want me to bring him there...i insisted that if/when the time comes i want him to be at home...i owe him that...no stress no car rides (though he loved them once upon a time)...so they will give me names of vets who do that...

i am hoping for the best with the treatment but have to be realistic and prepare for the worst too...

thinking of Cheryl and Whiskers and praying for them as well....and for Ele and Blakie....hope he gets better with the pred in place

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS

There is a mobile vet in town who has been well recommended in the past...I'd suggest googling mobile vet calgary or something to that effect....

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS

Claudia, continued love and support from North of you....
hang in there, and should the time come, you wanting it done at home, is/will be a final amazing show of what a fantastic mommabean you are!!!
Many hugs!
i am going to pray that the treatment gives him a turnaround....

I also want Maverick and Nike to be at home when they cross. Keeping you two in my thoughts.

Claudia....continuing to send you prayers during this difficult time. I hope the pred will really help.

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG QUESTION

i've noticed lately that each time i test him for his AM and PM BG it seems to stress him further...with the tremors getting somewhat out of control....

i'm wondering if for now....until we start the pred

can i stop testing him to give him that rest?

guidance needed

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG QUESTION

Claudia, of course you can stop testing! His BGs are great, why add something else to what you have to worry about? Why not test every couple of days or something?

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG QUESTION

So there's no chance a kitty goes hypo on their own right - even with bupe? Is only a concern if they are on insulin?

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

(((Claudia))) I think it's fine for both of you to take a break from testing.

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

I hope you're hanging in there, Claudia, and getting whatever rest you can for yourself. :) continued thoughts and prayers for both you and Rocket. unless someone suggests there's an issue, I'd definitely give him a testing break until you start the pred.

hope you and rocket are enjoying a good friday evening.

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

Hi Claudia & Rocket, I, too, think that it is a good thing to take a break from testing, especially if it is stressing Rocket. He will be more comfortable and so will you.
Continuing to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Many hugs,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

DH took me out again....trying to get me out of it all....gave Rocket his med and we headed out...the not testing him made a huge difference as he stayed out of the tub and slept on the floor near the entrance in the spare room...that's where he was just now that we got home and that's where i left him...

soon it's time for the next bupe dose...he has eaten Hi-Tor Neo food...i don't know the carb content but at this point anything he eats will be ok with me...

he is alert and staying out a bit...

this morning he enjoyed his time out on the balcony...it was nice and sunny and he enjoyed being on his bed sleeping (i covered him with warm blankets) for a full hour...then it got windy so i brought him back in...

he is alert for the most part...and i am enjoying EVERY minute of it with him....he is my precious Rocket....forever close to my heart!

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

Claudia, I'm so happy that you were able to go out tonight and relax a little bit. I think it is a great idea to give Rocket and break from testing. He sounds like he had a great evening and I'm glad he enjoyed the outside a little bit. Sounds like he was acting a little like the old Rocket.

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

Awesome update Claudia. That made my heart feel a little lighter tonight.

Your DH really gets some hubby points. Good for you going out for a bite with him.

Hugs.

(((Claudia)))
I have not been posting very much but I have been following your story. I am so sorry for what you have been going through and have been thinking positive thoughts for both of you.
You and Rocket deserve a break from testing....he has not had insulin and his numbers seem to be good.

I am glad you got a night out......you deserve it!

Re: 2/4 Rocket AM BG 67=NS/ PM BG=no test (giving him a rest

Hi ((((((Claudia, DH and Rocket)))))

I agree it is perfectly fine not to test Rocket while he is not on insulin, giving you both a break. I too now worry about causing Miss Witty more pain, but we will keep testing some while she is still on insulin.

As for steroids. I am an asthmatic and for severe attacks I will use oral prednisone (severe attacks are rare for me as my asthma is well managed). I am not a fan of steroids, but and this is a very important but , when I have used prednisone, it is like magic, the asthma is very, very quickly helped. That is what steroids do. There are concerns with long term use and it's effects, but in our situtations with Miss Witty and Rocket (and Blackie too, tho I am not as familiar with Blackie's situtation, so don't want to scare Ele, as her situtation does not seem as dire) the steroids are the only way to go. Rocket will feel better and improve his quality of life. (in our situations it is the present that matters, not the long term).

I am hoping that you, Rocket and DH are finding some peace. Live in the moment (as my friend Michelle and Peeps are doing).

Love to you,

Cheryl & Whiskers

P.S. I am not an expert on steroids, I just want to share my own personal experiance.
