Yesterday was..... BLUE and Yellow day in MannieLand. It was so nice to see Mannie have a blue day yesterday. We had a nasty spike in the AM cycle to the red zone.. no clue where that came from. The rest of the day was good for Mannie. Rumor has it that the Blue Mannie Group was rockin' it at Rusty's Winter Carnival. Way to go guys!! Appy continues to be good, and no major rejects yesterday. I had to find the "right one" in the morning, can #2 was a success. LB continues to be good, ketones negative. He's still up and about, slowness still persists, though at times it does seem a bit better. I hope for a good day today, maybe some nice yellow and blues today too. Right Mannie? Think blue Mannie, you can do it! Mannie - here's to you, some very strong feel better vines. Lubs ya big guy! cat_pet_icon

Today Mannie has a appt with an IM vetty. The point of the visit is to make an attempt to get someone to take serious look at Mannie's overall care, and coordinate his Heart stuff, his abdominal stuff, etc etc etc. Someone to get all the specialized vetties on the same page, plus Mannie's regular vet. Plus I would really like to go over this bout with pancreatitis. We shall see how it goes... I so hope it won't be a bust or that they question how I manage his FD. Paws crossed that this IM vet and I are on the same page.

All is well in MannieLand. :-D :-D Yesterday was supposed to be a sunny day here. oh sure... clouds and drizzle , and cold.... BRRR! Despite that, Mannie still made three trips out on the deck.  That was fun to watch. He checked the yard from all three sides of the deck. One could see his little nose sniffing.  Later that morning he did take a tour of the yard - visit all his haunts again - gosh that is so great to see! He had a good time out there, and then back in for some nanner time and bed time. Yesterday morning was like days of old with him: camping out in the kitchen while breffis was being made, hoping for a morsel with his name on it, like bacon. He got chicken instead. Just like the day before, but he tried anyways. We had a brushing session yesterday too - and he PURRED! I couldn't believe it - for 20 minutes... purr purr purr...   Life is good In MannieLand. Test was good this morning, as was the shoot. Appy was good: he ate well. CPC!!!!! 98% Close to normalcy in MannieLand, still working on that last 2%.... :-D Looking good!

Have a great day everyone. Not too sure what will be here today, after the vetty stuff. The weather should be better today so maybe a short hike somewhere if I can. :-D

Hey everybody! What's up??? I gots to go to the vetty today. bummer! but I think it will all be good. Maybe we can just hangout in the treehouse when I get back... eat catmint crisps and stuff.. maybe grill some salmon burgers. hangout together. What'd'tya think? that OK? Let me know - I am ready for anything... after the vetty. I so don't wanna go... ~~ Mannie psssttttt.... here's somepics of me!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385

What a great day for Mannie yesterday. He is getting better and better. Good luck at the IM today. Lots of good vetty vines coming your way. Tarragon now goes to an IM for most things and he has been awesome. It is so hard to juggle so many conditions, but you are on top of all of it. ((((Michelle)))) When things are going well it seems like a breeze but I know how hard it is when something gets out of whack. We'll be thinking about you and watching for an update.

I LOVE THE PICS. What a handsome guy.

Oh no on the vetty Mannie. We'll be there when you get back and hang out. See ya soon! - T

Sending lots of good IM Vetty vine today for Mannie. I know when there is so much going on, it is nice to have a Specialist coordinate the heart and other issues. I hope all goes well. Have a nice day, and hope after the Vet visit, you'll have time for a hike or walk.
Mannie, many thanks for all the Espresso and coffee deliveries this week and today. Love it, Auntie Ann

Mannie, oh boy, good luck at the Vetty, and don't be scared. Yes, let's chill out in the Treehouse. . I'll bring burgers and catnip fries. I'll be there waitin with the other kitties on your return. Auntie Ann - :-D :-D ~~ Mannie, kitteh Barista

Maggie - THX on the vetty..... I hope it is OK, and they don't poke me too much... or prod or pull, or ... well, all of that stuff. Cool then on the treehouse! Burgers would be great. OOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Lavender is good - I like lavender. My bean uses that stuff. THX Mags! See you in a few. ~~ Mannie

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +2 310

What a nice start for Mannie today - no fuds spike, way to go!!! Sending many IM vetty vines your way!!!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +2 310

Hey Mannie,

You can always bite the vetty or better yet, pee on the vetty! That will show them who is king and make sure they don't touch you! And sheesh, you are going to smell when you get back. I'll ask my bean to come with so she can give you a proper bath! tee hee, hope you like showers..... ;-)

Signed, Maui the Magnificent

Hi Kittehs - I noticed that Maui's wagon is full of all kinds of things - wetsuits, silly looking hats, scarves, gloves, all kinds of kitty clothes, not to mention nanners and even a pi....I don't know how all this stuff ends up in Maui's wagon, but somehow it does. If any of these items belong to you, just let me know and I'll be sure they get returned...Maybe you kittehs put them in her wagon for safe keeping and then forget? confused_cat Well, anyway, it's all here for the returning......And Mannie, thanks for today's tea, it's super yummy, not as cheery as yesterday...maybe you can add some cheery to the cimmamum?

You will be fine at the vetty bean. And you have permission to bite and pee on them if they do something you don't like! Your mom bean may not tell you that, but it's true.

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +2 310, +4 245

245 @ +2 WOOT!! We are back to the yellows. It will be interesting to see that the vetty visit will do to Mannie's BG. One never knows... sometimes he drops, other times he flies high. ;-)

Morning Pat ~O) ~O) ~O) THX so much on the vetty. It should be interesting to say the least. I hope we see eye to eye, and that I come back with a plan. THX too on Mannie and the fuds. So far is good.

Morning Amy ~O) ~O) ~O) Thanks - it is so nice when we don't get the fuds spike that he likes to do so much. YES: back to the yellows!! Many thanks on the IM vetty. Paws crossed there.

Morning Hillary ~O) ~O) ~O) Love it - no doubt he will pee everywhere - he usually does...
Auntie Hillary - oh oh on Maui's wagon.... I will make sure the kitties know so they can get their stuff... we all love Maui's wagon - it holds everything! OH! You is welcome on the tea. heeheeheee.... I like the cheery versions too. I will add a splash of cheery in yours, for sure! THX too on the vetty - I think I may do that. I get so nervous there..... ~~ Mannie, kitteh barista

Maui - heeheehee on the biting and the peeing... I will pee for sure - nail the techs and their floor. I don't mind the touch so much as the pokies in places where no one should be poked, ya know? I know... I will stink for sure. bummer..... oh oh on that shower. I dunno about that.... ~~ Mannie

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +2 310, +4 245

Hi Michelle
Good vet visit today. Sounds like a good plan to get all the vet specialists together on one page. I think it will be easier for you to sort it all out. Well okay, it would be for me :-D

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +2 310, +4 245

Hi Michelle and Mannie! Woo hooo that he is down to yellow already! Paws crossed and good vetty vines for the appt? What is an IM vet? I hope it all goes well, look forward to hearing the report! Wow lots of purrs on the brushing that is awesome. So good to hear things are returning to normal. Have a great Monday!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

195 @ +5, 254 @ +7.5 -- vetty visit in between. Not too bad on the 254 for a post vetty visit...

IM VET: Mannie did well at the vetty - such a good boy. I do like this IM specialist - very thorough, and she listened to me,. WOO HOO! We reviewed all that has happened to him during the past two months, all labs, all U/S. She agrees that Mannie is hypertensive, but also felt that his dose was two high (ETA: this refers to his BP meds dose). Going forward that will be adjusted to a smaller dose. We also discussed Mannie's general behavior, and what I have been seeing over the past month: the slowness, etc. It is her opinion that Mannie has Hypokalemia, or too low potassium, which is the reason this slowness, and general muscle weakness. So.... he will be put on a potassium supplement Tumil K ("liquid", as the pills were HUGE). Potassium level came in a 3.1, further labs were sent out for aldosterine testing, results are pending (shipped to UMinn). Once those come in he will be reevaluated, and a determination will be made on the BP meds. We may switch. We are not starting the BP stuff for at least three week to give Mannie time to process the Tumil K. Plavix/baby aspirin is on hold until these first two items are resolved, possible a few months down the road. The priority right now is to get the potassium level up, getting him feeling 100% (knew there was a reason I couldn't give that to him), then address the BP, and then the blood-thinners and potential clotting, issue in conjunction with plavix/aspirin. Sooooo.... that is it. and for once I was not questioned on my FD management (she actually said - good for you on home testing etc) or told I should be feeding science diet. she actually said FF is a decent food...  ;-) I like this vet.

Hi Roni - Many thanks! He did well. it was a god visit, got answers that explain a few things.

Hi Barb - THX! It was good visit - she was very good, IMHO, at prioritizing things, seeing the big picture. It did help me to out things in perspective. I liked her - she really listened.

Hi Michelle - THX - it is turning out to be a decent day for him. YAHOO! Vet was good, go things resolved I think. OH : IM = Internal Medicine THX too on the comb sessin - Hooray for ourrs. YAY!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

Great overall report!!!

For the BP meds...I don't know if you recall this, but I remember mentioning that Mario was on 1/4 tablet amlodipine twice a day, and his vetty started him out at 1/4 table once day, then reevaluated - at that point, it was determined that he needed the BP meds twice a day. When I took Mario for BP checks, it was at his "+6" for the amlodipine, for the most accurate read. I remember that Mannie was on 1/2 tablet once a day...maybe, when you reach that point, see what the vetty thinks about BID smaller doses with the BP meds....

Glad they can give the TumilK in liquid. Many years ago, we had a kitty who needed it...I remember how gigantic those pills were....and how the vets act as if giving such a thing to a kitty is "easy peasy" for us owners. Yikes!!!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

WOOT WOOT!!!

What's the potassium dosage in the Tumil K? BTW, it may taste HORRIBLE...I use 3 different types of potassium supplements for DH's hypokalemia periodic paralysis, they all work at different rates and ways. What's the potassium mixed in? Choices are normally Chloride, gluconate or citric acid. Hopefully they've put it in something that will mask any flavor or added other flavors to it. It CAN cause stomach upset but I'm sure your vet covered all this with you. I hope this helps his muscle weakness!!!

BIG HUGS!!!!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

Hi Amy - yes I remember that wit Mario - and yes, we will discuss it. Right ow she feels that 1/4 tab is what he should be getting, so once we start that should be the dose, unless the ending labs indicate we need another med. And yes, I was so glad that there was a liquid - well more like a very soft gel. Those pills were just too big - it would have been a battle... Even the IM vet said they were monster pills, and not easy to give. Funny she even tasted the gel: salty she said, but not too bad...

Hi Lyresa - it is potassium gluconate, 488 ml/2.34gm, if I read the label right. does that sound right? I'm supposed to give him 2.5 ml/once a day. it is supposed to be very palatable. I opened it for him and his little nose was working overtime, so we shall see how it goes. I too hope it helps him. Funny - the vet tasted it: salty she says, not too bad. ;-)

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

I'm glad Mannie's IM vetty visit went well. It sounds like she is a good doctor. Hopefully the potassium will help get him feeling better quickly.

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

Hi Michelle, I was looking for a Mannie update. It sounds like a good IM Vetty visit. That's great she diagnosed the low potassium issue, and he can be started right away, and then the bp issues eventually. I think the liquid definitely sounds better. Mags does better on liquid meds than pills. Sounds like she's in tune with home testing, too. All in all, a good visit. Sounds like Mannie wasn't too stressed either!
Hey Mannie, get ready for the KTSS and my lavender lotion. See you in the Treehouse, Mags

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

a good IM vet is worth their weight in gold! sounds like you found one. :thumbup

a few things about potassium supplements to file away for future reference...
--- there's another veterinary version of Tumil-K which is the same, but less expensive called Renakare: http://www.thrivingpets.com/index.php/renakare.html
it comes in tablet, powder, and gel forms. buying it online is about half the price of what my vet charges.
--- tablets can be crushed and added to food. it's how most of us give it. alex gets 3/4 tab twice a day crushed and mixed in her food. she doesn't notice!
--- the tablets are less expensive overall than the gel. i used to use a pill cutter, but they're easily broken into halves and/or quarters with your fingers.
--- an even less expensive alternative is to buy a potassium supplement (potassium gluconate) from a Health store. just make sure you're buying the same strength.

i'm rather confused as to why she thinks mannie's dose is currently too high... given the data you've collected.
perhaps she thinks his insulin requirements will decrease as his other issues are addressed and resolved???
<-------- ignore this. N/A.

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

What a great vet visit. She sounds like a keeper? How did you find an IM vet? Referral?

And not bad BGs considering. :-D :-D

Mannie! KTSS is on the way to the treehouse for the full treatment! Hey, if the vetty was nice i hope you didn't pee on her! -- Tess

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

Michelle, that vet sounds just wonderful...easy to talk to.
I assume IM is internal medicine? I'm guessing at that....Michelle (Scrabble) asked also.
Oh my goodness, how are you keeping all this straight? I would be so flustered trying to explain Checkers from the beginning, and try to remember what all she said. I take notes, but don't remember details between the lines.

Are you excited, and hopeful about getting Mannie all fixed, one thing at a time? :-D :-D

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

all those nanners, and Mannie needs potassium? confused_cat

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

It's specialist day in the PNW - sounds like Mannie was a very good boy at vetty. And you've found a great IM vet - so good to have someone you can trust and relate to. Nice that's it's relatively easily treatable too.

Paws crossed you've got to the bottom of things and you can get him back to 100% soon.

I could be wrong, but I think the IM vetty was referring to Mannie's BP meds, not his juice....

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 - IM Vet Report

Potassium gluconate is one of the supplements in the raw recipe we were using. I got it at the health food store $5 for 100 tablets, 99mg each. 99mg seem to be the size of most tablets. I'm not sure how that would compare to your gel. Does it say how many mg of PG are in a ml of gel?

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 +11 HI - IM Vet Re

+11 HI. ARRGGHHH!!!!! perhaps this is vetty stress..... aiyee..... ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile :YMSIGH:

Sienne - yes - I thought she was. I lvoed the fact that she listened.

Jill - thanks for the additional info - much appreciated. I got the gel becasue Mannie has become very savvy to anything in his food, and will not eat it if he thinks I've messed with it - the little stinker! I will give this gel a try, and see how it goes. Nice to know the pills are easily crushed. have you heard that this supplement can cause vomiting and diarrhea? website for tumil-k says it can. sure hope it doesn't with Mannie. No problem on the dose question - she was referring to the BP meds, sorry I wasn't that clear....

Ann (Tess) oh wow on the raw... all it says it that 1/2 tsp=488mg. ???? hmmmmmmm - I might have to see about these tablets.... question is - will he eat it if I put it in his food. and yes - via referral. I asked by regular vet who she would use, and she gave me a few names. then said - pick peterson, she knows her stuff, is honest, and very very good at what she does. I did like her, she is, so far, a keeper. bg's were great, until that +11.....

Amy - yes it was the BP meds... not the juice.

Hi Ann (Maggie) - Yupp - I hope this helps him - sounds like it will, addresses that other 2% of normalcy. Yes -the vet was on home testing - i got not one lecture - YAY!! manie did well - good BG's until that +11, aiyee!!!

HI Carla - thanks! I did like her, she really seemed to grasp the overall picture of what is what with Mannie. I so hope this will fix what ails him. paws crossed!

Wendy - I hope all w ent well with neko - i so need to get to your condo... yes it seems to be easily treatable. I hope he tolerates it well. I did like the vet - she seemed to be knowledgeable, she listened! THX - I so hope to be able to say 100% again, soon.

Mj -    I KNOW!!!! All those nanners and the boy has a potassium deficiency. go figure....  ;-)

Barb - yep, she was - nice to have someone who will talk your language. i thought she was great, has a good plan for Mannie. and yes IM = Internal Medicine. sorry - I should have said that. and it is tough to keep this all straight!!! OMG!!! Even the IM vetty said - wow: quite the file here. I said, yes, it is.  I ask for written reports from them too - they are darn god about being detailed. and YES!!! I hope this fixes him, takes care of an issue I have been seeing in him, especially since the P'titis came into being.

Tess - Maggie - HURRY!!! I STINK so bad.... Bring lots of lavender, please!!! nah,.... I was good, she was so cie! so i just peed in my carrier instead.... ~~ Mannie

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 +11 HI - IM Vet Re

So happy your found a good IM vet that listened to you  now Mannie lets come on down from the ugly floor

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 +11 HI - IM Vet Re

Lots of stress for Mannie today although it does not affect how handsome he is! I'm glad the IM vet was so thorough. I hope the potassium will bring those numbers right up and then you can get the BP meds adjusted. At least you have a set plan to make Mannie feel better.

Tobey said he will be right over as soon as he finishes with Neko. His massage abilities will be put to the test today!

Re: 2/4 Mannie AMPS 385, +5 195, +7.5 254 +11 HI - IM Vet Re

Michelle,
I noticed you amended your signature but you might want to change that to 'hypOkalemia' rather than 'hypERkalemia' - hypokalemia is not enough potassium, hyperkalemia is TOO MUCH potassium... :-D

Gluconate should be good...

Re: 2/4 Mannie PMPS HI - IM Vet Report

Hi Michelle - wow, it is AWESOME you found a vet like this. Wonderful to have someone looking at the *entire* Mannie. And yeah, he needs more nanners!

Re: 2/4 Mannie PMPS HI - IM Vet Report

HI @ PMPS. oh my..... down Mannie, Please...

Hi Lisa - I am glad that I took Mannie to see this vet - I really did like her, it was wodnerful to have someone look at the whole cat, and just not one part. and!!: MORE NANNERS!!!!   Mannie likes that part. :-D

Hi Lyresa - oh my goodness - what a typo. I knew it was hypo, not hyper too! Sheshhhh - and thank you for telling me. It i s now fixed. THX on the gluconate too.

Hi Marje - I hope so too. We will take this slow, give him the time he needs to process. Even this vet noted that he is sensitive, we have to go slow. OMG - what a plus that was that she understood that. YAY! Agreed too on teh BP meds, as she is firm in her belief that he has high BP, so this will need to be addressed. Mannie says tot ell Tobey he is so ready.... massage time!

Hi Lisa - me too - and a big yes on leaving the ugly floor....

Re: 2/4 Mannie PMPS HI - IM Vet Report

have you heard that this supplement can cause vomiting and diarrhea?
only from what i've read. i usually read up on meds/supplements before giving them to alex. i don't recall any kitties on the fdmb experiencing either of those symptoms. actually, i haven't heard of any problems/side effects when giving potassium supplements under vet supervision. your vet will want blood work every so often just to make sure he's not getting too much.

Re: 2/4 Mannie PMPS HI - IM Vet Report

Wow, Michelle! What a report! So glad you like this vet. It sounds like your sensitive guy will soon be getting the best treatment to get back on the road to his normal self.

And those pics! I just want to smother his cute face with kisses!

Mannie, whatcha doin up there? Come down, my friend!

Re: 2/4 Mannie PMPS HI - IM Vet Report

Hi guys,

Wow, I missed a momentous day! Michelle, I'm so glad that you got to a IM specialist, that you liked her, and that she has a good plan to go forward with.

Mannie, you did very well! I learned a lot from your condo today. I hope that the meds won't be too distasteful. Remember that they will help you to feel better and better.

Hey Mannie, I'm on my way to the treehouse to help with getting off the vetty smell and to grill some of those salmon burgers. You did good, man!
Your pal,
Rusty

Hopefully the weather will improve tomorrow and you'll be able to get out for a long walk. Have a good evening,

p.s. Great pics of the Mannster!

Re: 2/4 Mannie PMPS HI - IM Vet Report

Great pics of the handsome guy and a good report from the IM. And, she sounds wonderful and supportive! We're sending the crew over for soup and post-vetty cleaning rituals.

Glad you found a good IM vet & Mannie will be getting what he needs...I have little knowledge of BP & these supplements...We just are sending Giant Healing Vines to our buddy Mannie and hope he will be all better soon! Hugs & love from us!
