The "no food 2 hours before a shot" rule is to make sure the pre-shot number is not artificially inflated by food. With new members, they're usually not at the right dose yet and this goes along with the "no shot under 200" rule since there just isn't enough data yet to know what might happen.
I also had a hard time with this rule with Michelangelo and eventually got enough information on how he reacted to the insulin and to food that I now pretty much ignore it. Since you're already shooting lower numbers (meaning that you're already fairly close to the right dose) and you're getting a lot more data, it's probably also safe for you to move past this rule.
Pick a day when you'll be home to monitor if need be. Test him early, feed him, then test again at his AMPS and see what the number is. (This will give you some more feedback on how much food spikes his numbers.) Test again in 2-3 hours as the food should have worn off by then and the insulin should be kicking in and you'll see how much of an impact feeding an hour before the shot might have (maybe an earlier cycle, but most likely none).
