So last night Fortune was giving us beautiful blues - we were checking to make sure he didn’t drop like he did the other day!

I’m not sure if we missed a drop, or if going down to 120 would cause a bounce, but today he is super high again!

We figured out yesterday’s spike was from him eating through the garbage bag, and contents therein, but he definitely couldn’t have gotten more garbage last night. We are stumped. I was holding my breath that he was in the blues for a change hoping it wouldn’t dip and now he is back to too high

And worried. I’m not home today (medical appointments) but my husband is going to check for ketones.
 
I agree with Elise. You're seeing a bounce.

Bounces don't happen only due to low numbers. A bounce can occur if there's a fast drop or a big drop in numbers. Those numbers that were over 500 during yesterday's AM cycle and a drop to the 100s by PMPS triggered a bounce and you ended up with numbers in the 500s as a result.

Bounces are a pain and they don't make for a pretty spreadsheet.

I might point out that you missed the dose reduction with Fortune dropping to 45 on 1/31.
 
Thanks, both! It’s helpful to understand that it’s a bounce. He has so far tested negative for ketones.

We went from 2.75 to 2.5 after the AM cycle on 1/31. Our reduction was .25 IU. Are you saying that it should be a greater reduction in dose?
 
I just got home and Fortune was acting differently (vomited, went limp but still alert) so we are sitting outside the closest emergency animal hospital holding our breath.

we were told he may need to be hospitalized for 2-3 days, but he is still responsive right now.

we are both hysterical and scared for our baby. And because of covid we cannot even see him.

Fortune was transferred from the Local emergency hospital to the specialty and emergency hospital because he is a complex kitty. The emergency hospital wasn’t able to test his acidity because their machines were broken, but they do suspect DKA. The doctor told me that he can be acidic without Keytone ‘s, and he is displaying the symptoms. Apparently, he is also mildly anemic and his white blood cell count is high. I need to compare the current labs to the ones done earlier in January, because I’m not sure if he was then too.

At the emergency hospital, they administered fluids and did some preliminary blood tests. They put a cone on him so he wouldn’t mess with the IV catheter, but he wasn’t very responsive in the car so I took it off. He perked up a smidge, but didn’t try to escape, and didn’t move around as much as he does normally.

we are so scared. The doctor at the emergency hospital explained that DKA can happen with too much insulin, but that it’s better than hypo. I’m trying to hold onto that right now while we wait for an update from the other emergency doctor.

Because of Covid we can’t be with him, but I hope to hear from the doctor in the next hour, though I was promised he’s being looked at right now. As of now he is the only animal in the hospital being evaluated.

we would do anything to help him. I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out if the other things we noticed could help discern what is happening right now, and get him the best care possible.

The emergency vet informed us that he is severely anemic in critical care and his bp is very low, along with his BG being high. He will be hospitalized overnight at least. The vet indicated his prognosis is very poor.

This vet was also was sorely lacking in bedside manner, reading out blood chemicals and stats like he was taking about a case, and not our baby. Rattling off that all the comorbidities make him harder to treat, etc. At least he didn't bring Fortune's age into things! He was condescending, cold, and quite frankly rude. I just hope he is a good vet for our baby.

He is currently getting a transfusion, and we are praying with our whole hearts that he comes home to us.

I am in shock and disbelief - he was just seen this SUNDAY by an internist at this same hospital! How was it not caught? How is he so sick right now?

We are absolutely losing our minds while holding our breath and hoping he comes home to us soon.
 
The bedside manner of that vet sounds just awful:(.

:bighug::bighug::bighug: I'm so sorry... I hope he's able to pull through. How did he go from being mildly anemic at the first vet to severely anemic at the second vet? Did that actually change, or was it just different testing methods? I hope they're able to find a cause. Thinking positive thoughts for you and Fortune!
 
Sending lots of healing vines for Fortune and :bighug: for you. The low anemia seems very strange to me, since in your last labs from 26-Dec the hematocrit was in normal ranges. I can assure you there is nothing you did to cause this, nor could you have known and done something about it.

We cannot adequately express how comforting you all are, reading your well wishes is deeply felt and appreciated. We are sitting and waiting and holding our breath for an update that is positive. We did hear from our GP who spoke to the emergency vet - he was significantly kinder and more comforting, and expressed that they are doing everything possible to help Fortune, and keep him comfortable, although his problems are serious and the prognosis is guarded. We are still holding onto hope that our boy will be back in our arms toorrow.

didn't see the hematocrit value on the transfer paperwork, so I'm not sure if they tested it and went on other values or signs at the first vet. At the second emergency vet the "automated" test (I have no idea what that means) value was 18, and the "manual" count was 14. I

Thank you - we both really needed to see this. We love him so so so hard and are hoping so hard that he pulls through. We keep playing back what we could have done differently to prevent him being so sick, and I am immensely frustrated that he was JUST SEEN SUNDAY (though no lab work was done) and something changed so abruptly. Your words are immensely comforting

We really hope so - our GP speaking to him did give us some comfort. We are hoping he stays closely involved and pushes for the right care.

Thank you all so much. We are waiting for the update once he gets a blood transfusion, in the next 1-2 hours.
 
It’s good that your gp is talking to the ER vet. I hope the gp will keep checking in. That should help. I’m so sorry this is happening. You did nothing to cause it. Times like this I wish one of us was a vet. Keep us updated. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
The vet tech is nicer than the doctor, at least, but keeping our expectations very low. He has had the transfusion going for about an hour, and it takes 3-4 hours to complete, and another 1-2 hours to run the tests. We should hopefully hear more around 2am EST.

She also shared that she was able to put three IV catheters in him without a peep, which absolutely terrifies me. This boy makes it known he doesn't like being sticked, and it's very troubling.

His last blood pressure is also lower than it was when he first came in.

Please keep sending Fortune all the love and healing vines you can. He is a tough resilient kitty, and we are hoping so hard he will come through.
