Baxter is off to the vet this afternoon.
I found blood in his urine this morning. :o Being a worrier...I am a little freaked out & so scared it could be something serious. I don't know what to think.?

If it is a UTI what should I except for his BG #s? His #s have been a little higher then usual lately.
I add at least 2oz of water to his food every feeding. Is this not enough?
Is it the food I am feeding him? I been feeding Sophitcat Supreme Turkey & Giblets. I started transitioning Baxter to Dr. Pierson receipe on the 30th. I am currently at the cooked stage with ground chicken thighs only & egg yolks. No supplements. He eats canned in the morning & the ground chicken in the evening. Am I doing this all wrong?
Is it the cat liter? I use Tidy Cat scoopable.
What generally causes a UTI? Would changing his diet cause this & would it be so soon? confused_cat
What questions do I need to ask the vet?

Thank you for any suggestions.

Re: 2/2-Baxter Possible UTI?

Hm how should I explain this when it comes to diabetics - I am not good in explaining

the glucose have thresholds

10/180 is when the glucose is flooding the blood stream

15/270 is when the glucose is flooding the kidneys and thus end up high in the urine

But the thing with high glucose in the urine is the same with honey .... honey has so much sugar it is sterile, so it is not very high glucose in the urine that causes the UTI, it is rather when they are lower in the glucose when the bacterias as enteroccocis for instance starts thriving on the glucose.

Blood in the urine does not always have to come from a UTI. It can be the kidneys.

What you need to ask your vet is to draw a sterile urin analysis sample direct from the bladder. Mine use ultrasound scan to locate the bladder, and it is a very long needle on a large syringe he then sticks down into the stomach and into the bladder, all governed by the ultrasound scan images, and then from the bladder he draws up sterile urine into the syringe, and then do the urine analysis.

Thank you for explaining this to me. You are a good explainer. Your response is very helpful. I know can come up with some questions to ask the vet. Today won't be his regular vet. Keeping my fingers crossed for a positive visit.

Re: 2/2-Baxter Possible UTI?

Be pushy! I have to be that with many of the vets at our 24/7 animal hospital. I don't care if they think I am a crazy person not taking my meds, but when there is something not right with any of Gustav or Simba, I go right away with them, even if night, and am pushy as h*. And in 99 % of the times I've been right that there has been something wrong.

Feel better, Baxter!

Re: 2/2-Baxter Possible UTI?

Baxter is my one & only. When something has been wrong I make sure I always ask tons of questions. I take a lot of the vets time. But hey I am paying big $$ I want my money's worth & what to understand what the problem is. I just don't want to handed a bottle of meds with instructions. That doesn't work with me.

I will let you know what I find out. I have to leave in bit for the appointment.

Some of the lab work came back from Baxters vet visit yesterday with blood in the urine.
I will have culture results back Mon or Tues.

-No Ketones in urine
-No cyrstals in urine
-No Glugose in urine
1025 units of gravity (normal is 1035)
Normal white blood cells
Red blood cells increase

He is still going to the liter box alot & teeteeing. I havent seen anymore signs of blood. I been giving him Claramox every 12 hrs.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

Sorry to hear about Baxter! eeeks
Hope he is feeling better soon.
Paw hugs comming your way!
