Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

Sorry she is so high. Since I am not an expert on cats, I can only offer my human, diabetic perspective. With a 243, this cat seems to still need some insulin. I would wait for an expert opinion here but if it were my cat, I would give insulin.

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

Which FF Classics are you feeding? The FF Turkey & Giblets is one that spikes some of our kittties' bg's! Also the Salmon Feast? Sorry Bailey is yellow today.

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

hang in there melissa. some cats seem to sputter for a bit on the OTJ trials - that's why it's called a trial. doesn't mean she's not going to get there, so don't give up yet!

yes, the savory salmon and the turkey and giblets seem to raise BG's for quite a few cats. i stick to the chicken or beef 90% of the time because they are supposed to be 4% and don't seem to cause any increase.

which variety of ff did bailey have?

and i don't think the answer is likely to be reducing the carbs - but wait and see what others say.

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

Her absolute favorite is the Salmon & Shrimp Feast. We also feed T & G, Chicken, Ocean Whitefish & Tuna. I usually buy 3 or 4 pallets and just mix them together so no one gets bored with any one flavor. Last night they did get 2 cans of the T & G. (3 cats, 3 cans per feeding.)

She does seem to be sputtering. The original instructions I got were - don't shoot during the trial, post for help first. Is there a number above which I should go ahead and shoot, like 200 maybe? I am OK with postponing things a bit too, I just want what is best for Bailey.

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

I would think that the 243 means she still needs something. T&G raises a lot of the kitties BGs. It doesn't Tarragon, but he is not very carb sensitive. I know they asked you to post here for further direction, so I am anxious to see what they tell you as well. Hang in there Melissa! You are a great bean.

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

If Bailey is carb sensitive, the FF T&G could have raised the bg. Maggie goes crazy over the FF T&G, but I can only use it when she is low and needs a boost. :-D

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

The longer a cat is on even a tiny drop of insulin, the stronger & stronger the liver & pancreas get, to support their function..This is a kitty on the verge! Dont get disappointed...Everything worth while takes time! You are doing a great job, you are so close, dont give up now--
Ask Devon & Mocha and several other OTJ kitties, about their trials & tribulations!
Hopefully this will end well, pinky swear! Hugs & Love from us!!

Sorry that it's not going super smooth! I hope you will figure out what to do. I did not know about the turkey and giblets being a BG spiker! That is what I feed Simon half of the time! I guess the civvie is getting that now, also :) She will eat anything!

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

Hi Melissa & Bailey,
Don't get discouraged. Bailey may simply not be quite ready to give up insulin. FF T&G is apparently around 7% carbs. Rusty adores it. He gets it every night as a bedtime treat, but only a teaspoonful. He looks forward to it every night. I also feed it to bring him up If he is going too low. I find it puzzling, given the ingredients listed on the can, that it is 7%: there isn't anything in it that suggests carbs. Just one of those mysteries. But all the kitties go crazy for it, so there might be a secret ingredient!

If you can find the Merrick BF (before grains) foods (Turkey, Chicken, Beef), they are only 1%. (Rusty will eat them, but not enthusiastically).

I hope that tomorrow will see Bailey back on track, but you may have to resume insulin if she stays as high as she is.

Ella & Rusty

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243 :(

Melissa, I just switched Tink & Tawny to under 3% carb food & it really seems to make a difference already.

Today they got the 0% versions and Tawny surfed blue all day (she usually surfs yellow) and Usually Pink Tink actually came down to high yellow.

Bailey is so close, she'll get there!

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243, +6.5 256 :(

Thanks everyone for stopping by and cheering us on!! DH got a mid-cycle test and she hasn't gone down any. I am planning to shoot tonight and I guess we will just play it by ear for a while. If she needs more support it is not the end of the world.

Should I go back to 0.1 units or try for something smaller? A drop?

Re: 2/29 Bailey AMBG 243, +6.5 256 :( dose?

I think you need to shoot. If you can measure a drop, how about starting there? I've asked Jill to take a look. We may need to think about a novel approach but let's see how Bailey does with as small a dose as you can measure reliably.

I gave her half of 0.1 units, which I am calling a drop on my SS. Maybe this will be her magic dose.  ohmygod_smile Crazy cat.
