AMPS 137 shooting .75f

Boomer ate most of his fuds last night, he left just a bit in the +9.

Yesterday I contacted Dr Larry about Allen; here is a snippet of the conversation:

Me: We would like to start Allen on the Fosomax and then do another ionized calcium test in a month. I also want to change his diet (especially the dry food) but I'll have to do some research on it. He really likes his Fancy Feast but it's higher in phosphorous than a CKD kitty should get; can we get a phosphorous binder?

Dr Larry: How on earth would you know about the need to reduce phosphorous in a CKD/hypercalcemic cat?

Me: Didn't I tell you, I was a vet in a previous life.

Dr Larry: I totally believe it.

So we're picking up the Fosomax today and I've been told to not feed Allen for 2 hours previous to giving it, to syringe water after and to put butter on his lips to encourage him to swallow. I don't think getting him to swallow will be much of a problem, if I can't let him eat for 2 hours before the pill he will want to have his fancy feast. DH is also picking up the P-binder at the vet's today. The Foxomax only has to be given once a week. Any tips/tricks/info anyone has on either the Fosomax or the p-binder....I would love to hear them!

I have a newborn session later this morning so I'd best get moving! Be back later to visit some condos; I hope all the kitties are behaving themselves this morning and eating their fuds!
 
hope the shoot goes great... and that the little one is very sleepy... love how we inform ours vets a lot of the times... come on Boomer time to find the greens once more :bighug::bighug:
 
The only thing I know for sure from multiple posts it that the P-binder has to be given in food and not by itself or it doesn't do anything. Glad that Boomer at most of his over night fuds and hope he heads to the lagoon today.

Which phosphorus binder are you getting? There are several types. Some easier to give than others.

@Wendy&Neko I don't know the name of it but now Dr Larry is refusing to give it; he contacted the company who says it shouldn't be given to a cat with hypercalcemia. I'm so frustrated! I'm going to ask him if there's another one.
 
That was probably a calcium based phosphorus binder, and no that shouldn't be given to a cat with high calcium. From my talks with Neko's IM vet, that seems to be the go to binder in Canada as it was his first offer. Aluminum hydroxide may be a better choice. Here is Tanya's page on types of phosphorus binders. I used aluminum hydroxide with Neko.
 
How is Allan's phosphorus numbers? Sorry, don't know enough about a hypercalcemic cat, but I think you wanted phosphorus binder cause all he could eat is high P foods?

@Wendy&Neko Well he really likes the fancy feast which is higher in phosphorous than what he should be getting.
Phosphorus 1.5 Normal Range 0.9 - 2.0 mmol/L

If his phosphorus is normal, I wouldn't add binder, but it's really a decision for your vet. Neko's IM vet didn't want to add binder until her levels were above normal.

Marje had suggested we start using a lower phosphorous food because Allen is early stage CKD. But you're right; it is still within normal levels at this time.
