Paws crossed for the vetty visit and Pepper eating soon. The numbers are nice but I can imagine a bit nerve wracking. nailbite_smile
 
Saw my regular vet. He gave me an injection of Cerenia for tonight and a script for Ondansetron, but he likes cerenia better and said I could come back and get more cerenia tomorrow if worked tonight and I'd rather do cerenia. Which is better? Cerenia or ondansetron? How long do you give these meds? Just till the cat starts eating again? Forever? Where is the best place to give this injection?
 
My vet loves Cerenia, for some reason. I have given J.D. the tablets that you have to split into quarters (that wasn't easy). I think it has some anti-inflamatory for the gut or maybe it's a pain killer (I'm sorry, I don't remember) in it, that Ondansetron does not. I give J.D.'s insulin in his sides, so when I give him an injection of another med., I give it in his scruff. I just did some Googling and it looks like Cerenia should be used with caution if liver or some heart problems are present. If you choose to go with Ondansetron, Costco Pharmacy has the best (by far) price.
 
We use both cerenia and ondansetron. The cerenia injections were great at first because Zener's appy was so poor. He would want to eat about an hour or so after the injection. But those needles are like harpoons! :shock: :shock: So we were glad to switch to the pills. Cheaper too. We get 16 mg pills and cut them into quarters (so a 4 mg dose). My understanding of cerenia is similar to Dyana's. It has some anti-inflammatory properties and helps with pain a bit. It was developed as a drug for dogs to help with car sickness. We regularly give zantac (BID), ondansetron (BID) and cerenia (3 times per week).

My civie has gotten Cerenia before for it's anti inflammatory properties when he's had cystitis flares.
 
You can try to send a PM to Jess and Earl. I think she works for a vet cardiologist or something like that. She hasn't posted on the FDMB for a long time, so I don't know if she'll get the PM, but she might.
 
Cerenia also comes in tablets. However, if a kitty is nauseous and ma be vomiting, an injection is better since a pill can be thrown up. Usually, a medication like this is given to deal with acute symptoms. It's not meant to be given long term. That said, ondansatron is often given to combat the nausea resulting from chemotherapy. Chemo can last a long time.
 
every time we gave punkin cerenia we had great results. i thought it was a great drug. that sounds kinda sketchy, but ya know what i mean! we used the pills, also cut in quarters.

did you find out anything about her thyroid today?

Our vet referred us to this article about long-term cerenia use. We have used it with Zener for about two years now. He gets 4mg (1/4 tablet) three times a week. Plus ondansetron before his AM and PM shot. The combo has been very effective and there have been no side effects yet.
