Good Morning LL! Thank you Elsa! :coffee: :coffee: John was a sweetie and let me go to bed last night and then stayed up late to make sure Tess wasn't going to play tricks on us again. First sub-q fluids this morning, it didn't go too badly. Tess was a little uncertain about being on the counter and we had the bag hanging from the pot rack for good flow. i think it was a little too high to read well and we gave her some extra, about 30cc too much! :nailbiting: Is that a problem do you think? We are going to try a different place w/ the bag a little lower to see it better even if the flow is slower. She was pretty good about it, but a little squirmy. Doing it on the couch should help as she can sit in a lap. Which is where she is right now, and she deserves it! Good kitteh!

From Trix's condo:
Are you still giving Trixie sub-q fluids? I was reading up on squids on Tanya's site. She has a link for membership discount at Walgreens. I went there and filled in their calculator and it is still coming up w/ $22.96 a case! I printed it out and and going to go in to ask about it! She also has the She also has the DCN (Drug Control Numbers) for the specific bags. I looked at Hospira's site and they no longer have the DEHP free bags, but it looks like B Braun does and Baxter too, but in a 500cc size. I'm going to see if Walgreens or Costco can get one of those when I order. AND there are a couple of other discount cards that may work!

Yep, Trix still gets squids every day. I know Marje used to be able to get hers at Walgreens for that price, but I don't think anyone has had that kind of luck in quite some time now. It has been a while since I've tried local places like Walgreens, but with the shortage, no one here has been able to get them for less than $75 a case. I haven't been able to get them locally anywhere at all so far (none of the pharmacies were allowed to order them), except from my vet where they charge a whopping $30 per set (one line, one bag, 10 needles). The shortage has been going on for a year and a half or so now, and last fall it got really bad - it was almost impossible to find them anywhere at any price! I'm well stocked right now, so I haven't looked around recently - I don't know if it's any better yet. Hopefully you'll be able to get them for $22 - that would be awesome!!

Sounds like you had a good first round with Tess. We have our bag hanging from the shower curtain rod and Trix is on the floor next to the tub. If it was just one of us doing the fluids, we'd never be able to see the numbers, but we split the tasks - some how I lucked out with doing the needle stick :rolleyes:and skritching Trix while DH keeps an eye on the numbers.

30ccs extra probably isn't an issue! The main thing you want to keep in mind is making sure that the previous batch of fluids are fully absorbed before re-fluiding her.

Bravo! :cat:

I was terrified the first few times we did fluids for Zener, and he was still like a statue. I also did the fountain reenactment a few times, got so nervous we were going over the "allotted" amount, and pulled the needle out without capping off the fluids. We were so grateful for Gus (and beans) making the fluids video, such a tremendous help.

We ended up buying an inexpensive IV pole from Amazon and it made things a lot easier, it was like having an extra hand. After Zener crossed the Bridge, we donated the pole to the nursing lab at the local university. It would have cost a lot more to ship it to someone else than what it cost on Amazon.

Keep on practicing, you will be a pro in no time.:bighug:

Hey Ann, Mike here,
Glad the squids went ok. I don't know if Marje told you but we went to a medical supply store and got an IV stand. Just a simple telescoping metal pole on wheels with hooks on top and only cost about $20 as I remember. That gave us the luxury of doing the fluids wherever they were comfortable and happy to be without having to rig up a contraption. Have a great day.

I have had two cats that I have given Sub-Q Fluids to and I hang the bag from the wine rack over our sink, and sit on the floor with the cat between my legs. When the bag is full it is a bit difficult to read the measurements, so I typically have DH on standby to let me know when I get to where I need to be, Once the bag is a little less full I can easily tell when I need to stop.

And extra 30ml shouldn't be a problem, but it probably depends on how much you are already giving. I was once told that the max you wan to give in one spot is about 150 ml, if more fluid is needed then it is best to use two spots.

Good job, Tess and Beans!! If you have one of those free-standing clothes racks, that might work, too. Bravi for doing the first squids! I had to give them to Stu, but his vet used syringes, about 6 big syringes. I had to fill them, set them out, and do them one after the other. I failed that course and had to take him in to the vet each time.

Have a fine evening,

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Congrats on job well done! My first solo squids was when I worked at the shelter, on a stray cat who didn't know me from anybody. Not my best work.

Nice PMPS tonight.

Sounds like it went really well. I should be an expert at it by now, but I still have all kinds of issues - the biggest being that Minka doesn't seem to have that much extra skin and with all that fur, it's really hard to get a good stick. I go too far more often than not. I think the extra 30 cc won't be an issue, as long as - like Amy said - you make sure the pouch is all dispersed before you give the next round.

I went to a local medical supply place and bought a used IV pole for about $30. It beats the heck out of the way we used to do it - I had one of those things that hooks over a door and you hang clothes on it. I put the bag on a hangar and hung it on the bathroom door, and put the cat on the counter. He/she was uncomfortable there and it was hard to get him/her to hold still the whole time. With the pole, I can do it anywhere - usually with Minka on a pillow on her daddybean's lap! I believe Rachel bought an old coat rack and used that to do Chyna's squids. Whatever works!

Morning Ann and John :coffee::coffee::coffee:
