Doodles 2/24 Doodles seems to be pretty good this morning. Hopefully he's forgiven me for the scale experience:rolleyes:

Thank you Amy & Bobbie for the AB remarks in his condo from yesterday. Surely he's had ABs in the past from dental and the biopsy and wonder which one they used. She did mention that most (including Dr. Lisa Pierson) are not in favor of Covenia but that she has not had any problems with it. I'll be sure to explore. My concern is if he needs the AB and doesn't eat all of it then what's the point. Also mentioned switching to Levemir and while she agreed that would be the next best choice she doesn't think he's at that point of needing a switch yet. I do feel much better after meeting with her. My favorite is when I told her about the IM vet giving me a sliding scale with Lantus. She rolled her eyes and said "and how'd that work out"....so basically agreeing the IM vet is an idiot - lol

Ok, lets see if he gives any downward movement today. We did see a decent slide last night but still no real progress.

I know convenia is not a favorite around here and I see the downside--that being said I have used it for years before I knew any of this with many cats (including Rico and Dre) and had no issues. However I do see the concern--
You may want to ask about baytril injectable--I think the dose is 1 shot a day-5 days but I think it is IM-
Hope he slides down today so this is a null and void issue for you :bighug:
 
My vet and I just agreed to disagree on the FD treatment. Not the best I know but he knows that I got Boomer into remission in 2014 by NOT following the vet's advice. At any rate, I like this vet very much and he's been very good to my pets in the past so I'm not willing to switch.

Doodles.....little dude work the juice for your mama (and yourself) please?

Karen....lots of hugs to you:bighug::bighug::bighug: I know you're super frustrated! This is his second cycle on the increased dose so maybe you'll see some action on his BG today!
 
It sounds like you have a good vet. I hope Doodles slides down today. Good luck deciding on an AB if you need it. A couple of my cats have had the convenia injection before I found this site and did not have any problems with it. I can understand the concern though since it stays in the system so long and you can't do anything about it.

I don't intend to let her run the show by any means. After looking at my SS she's comfortable with my ability for dosing :) Although I agreed to increase earlier than protocol yesterday with his numbers I was in agreement givin he's monitored. Also at this point agree with holding the dose for a few extra cycles. I told her we don't need her much but when we do (current situation) I need a vet who is going to work with me and not sweep my concerns under the rug.
 
I would definitely explore other AB options, and it sounds like this vet might work well with you on that. I wonder if another possibility would be good old fashioned penicillin. Several years ago my civvie Petey needed an emergency dental. They gave us clavamox to use for the days leading up to it (of course the tooth broke on a Friday and they couldn't fix it until Monday!). After just one dose, he pretty much turned green (or he would have looked green if he was a human!), wouldn't eat or move or do anything. So the vet told us to stop the AB and the day of the dental they gave him a shot of penicillin. I don't know if that would be ideal for Doodles situation, either, but it's something to investigate. I just would hate to see you spend time with Convenia when it probably isn't the right med - since you don't know what's going on, I would try to use something that has a much broader spectrum.

Maybe he'd do better with a syringed med if it was compounded into a chicken or beef flavor???

The new vet sounds a lot more promising! I hope Doodles likes her as well.

...and I would definitely stay away from Convenia as well (for all the reasons mentioned already). Personally, I haven't had good luck with Clavamox either. One of my cats was severely allergic to it and, even without allergies, it tends to upset the digestive tract (the last thing Doodles needs). My vet's go-to broad spectrum antibiotic is Baytril. It is a pill, but I have never had a problem hiding it in food.

Thanks @jayla-n-Drevon mentioned the same one and it does look like it covers many infections. If is also available in an injectable form. I have a left over prescription of Clintabs from last Jan. when he had his dental done (no I don't plan on giving it to him). Those are super small. If the AB options are that small I can see hiding it in the food crushed up. I think of a human AB that is a horse pill and there's no way!
 
I just got the pill "shooter" I have not tried it yet but I thought it would be good to have with Rico-and capsules to put anything gross in :confused:
I have never seen clavamox injectable--
I have only used the baytril injectable---there is also some research with the baytril and cats vision although I know of no cats that have had a issue.
