Pepper spent the whole day at the cardiologists office getting some tests to determine what might be causing his inappetence. They couldn't find anything wrong internally, so his cardio vet thinks it's probably the new diuretic and he may just need his meds tweaked a bit. She reduced his dose of Torsemide, the diuretic, and also prescribed Mirtazapine for an appetite stimulant. She increased his dose of Potassium and added Pepcid. So many pills!!! And some of them are huge!

Good news that the cardio vetty couldn't find anything wrong internally. I hope it's as easy as a tweak of the meds. Are you no longer giving cypro as an appy stimulant? I think I've heard it's better than mirtazapine because you have better control over it where mirtz is given once every 3 days. But maybe it's what'll work better in Pepper's case.

Ugh on the pills. The counter probably looks like a pharmacy now. Come on down Pepper. You are home now. :YMHUG:

Oh Pepper sweet thing come on down!

What a tuff day for Pepper. I am so glad the Vet didn't find more problems. Can you crush the pills in his food?

I bet folks around here have lots of suggestions for giving big pills.

If Pepper won't eat pills crushed in his food, can you break the big ones in half and put them in pill pockets? I know what a challenge it is to pill a cat - I have four, all on some kind of med, and several are on more than one. They are all different, too - some will eat pill pockets, some not, etc. Hope you can get the meds into Pepper and that they help! Sending healing and appy vines.

Wendy - I'm going to give the Mirtazapine since the cardiologist recommended it.

Tricia and Linda - Pepper used to take his pills in pill pockets but he's not eating well right now and isn't interested in treats. I had a terrible time pilling him over the weekend so they gave me a lesson in pilling cats at the cardiologist's office today. Of course, for the techs, Pepper just opened his mouth and swallowed the pill without any fuss!

Pilling gets easier with practice. Get a syringe full of water ready, scruff cat and tilt head back, pop in pill, stroke throat and squirt in some water. Or sometimes a little coating of butter helps it go down. And it always looks easier when the techs do it.
