Didn't have time to post this morning....it has been 1 of those crazy types of days again in my world! LOL!

Morris only ate about 1/2 can of Friskies last night and so far today, he has only eaten about 1/4 can or perhaps a bit more. I added some more water on top of the food & put him beside it after I took his BG reading a few moments ago & he did start to take a few more bites.

I had planned on taking him in to the vet office this afternoon to have his folate & B12 levels tested so that I can start giving him some B12 injections....I guess I missed the part the other day when the vet & I were discussing it & she said it needs to be a fasting lab sample!!! I have made an appointment to take him for the labwork on Saturday morning. He needs to fast overnight & then I can give him 1/2 dose of insulin in the morning before taking him for the labwork. Since all of that will screw up his BG numbers, I guess my plan of doing a full curve this weekend also needs to be thrown out the window! I don't think I will be able to do a curve next weekend either as my daughter is supposed to be in a soccer tournament all weekend & I don't think I will be able to manage geting BGs done every 2 hours (still waiting to get the tournament schedule).

Hi Gwen. Hope your day is settling down, and hope Morris is coming down from his RBC.
Maybe, you could do a curve on Sunday.
It might not be perfect, because of the fast and vet visit on Saturday. But you might gather some good data nonetheless.

I am pleased that he is eating more than he was, but he still is not eating very much. On the 1 hand, I think I should give him some more SQ fluids, but on the other hand I want him to get his nourisment from eating rather than the fluids! I just don't know what to do these days with him! Sure wish there was a site as wonderful as this site that would help me with all this pancreatitis business!

I'm glad Morris is eating better, hopefully that means he is starting to feel better.

How much fluids are you giving him, and how often? And do you have pain meds? What about appetite stimulants? Just trying to get myself caught up.

Thanks Lucy! The 1st week he was diagnosed with p~itis (about 2 weeks ago), I was giving him 250 mls SQ fluids every other day. I did that for 4 days, then he was eating really well & I stopped the fluids. On Sunday/Monday of this week, however, he started not eating as much again, so I gave him another 250 mls of fluids on Monday evening. He is getting bupe twice a day.....started a week ago Mon evening & my vet wants me to give it to him for a full 14 days. Haven't done any appetite stimulants. I have tried pepcid, but it is VERY difficult to even get that 1/4 tab down his throat!!!

Hi Gwen,
I was wondering why you think you might need to give Morris more fluids? As in amount? Frequency? The subq's are for hydration, not nourishment. Food is for that! If Morris needs more fluids, you may find him feeling better...and then eating better. A dehydrated cat feels like blah! and wont eat well. What does your vet say?

I understand how frustrating and stressful it is when your baby wont eat. Been doing it for 3yrs now. Have you joined the yahoo assist feeding and pancreatitis group? You might find some good additional support, thoughts, and ideas over there. Let me know if you need the links.

Hope your week wraps up calmly and your daughter has a great game!

thats A LOT of fluids!!!! :o All in one sitting? A lot of folks find it best to do smaller amounts on a daily basis. How much does morris weigh?

He weighs about 11 lbs or so. I was told I could either give him 100 mls 1 day & 150 mls the next day & continue alternating, or just give 250mls every other day. It seems a lot less stressful to us all to do the every other day routine!! LOL!! My vet says that as long as he is eating, I don't need to worry about the fluids...but if/when he isn't eating I should be giving him fluids. I last gave fluids on Mon evening, so tonight would be the next time to give more fluids. He is eating some, just not eating all that much, so I don't know if I should do the fluids tonight or not.

The Pepsid may also really help to settle Morris' tummy. If he's a pain to pill, will he swallow it in food? I think someone is currently giving that piece of Pepsid in a chunk of Laughing Cow cheese.

We have not had many exchanges in the past. My girl has crf, pancreatitis, GI disease (lymphoma/ibd), metabolic acidosis, and fd...probably a zillion other things undiagnosed. Ive been doing subqs daily for 3yrs. I also spent 9+ months syringe feeding most of Latte's calories. If you have any questions about our experience and how we have made it through, please let me know.

hey gwen i answered your PM from the other day.

just so you know the fluids are to flush out the toxins that CP causes and should be given every single day during a flare. 250 all a once is a lot, but yesterday you asked this: "I am surprised, however, that there wasn't much LB action overnight. Considering I gave him 250mls SQ fluids yesterday, there was only 1 small pee clump"...was because he used all the fluids you gave, hence they were not peed out. talk to your vet and ask if you should be giving 100 mls or so bid while he is having this flare.

sorry haven't been around, having pain flare myself. from yesterday also~ most CP cats do not need steroids to get through a flare, it is more of a last resort type of thing, this is his first flare right?

and his main symptoms is not eating? if that is is main symptom, then i certainly would be treating the main symptom by using appy stims. will your vet write you an Rx for mirtz?

also pepcid comes injectable form, a whole bottle is only a couple of bucks, would be very helpful for your vet to sell you a bottle, so much easier than trying to get a pill in.

are you still giving the bupe everyday?
lol, i think what is needed is a recap of what you are doing and what his symptoms are so that (don't know about anyone else but i went back day after day after day trying to put the whole story together) we can have an easier time answering adn giving suggestions. :)
