Yesterday...

Boy he is energetic this morning, went for a tear on the cat wheel and really got moving! Very strong appetite. Very talkative.

Seeing if we can check ketones every other day for now, after recent spike in ketones we had gone back to daily checks but I think every other day might suffice. So I will check at an upcoming BG test time like +2/3. No change in weight, still 10.6 as he was at vet's 1 week ago.

We are into the 5th cycle on 2.25u as of this morning.

crikey, skip one day checking ketones and they go from .4 to 1.3

I hate the higher numbers makes me so worried but like others have said, his behavior and appetite are super normal today, appetite is actually stronger than usual so....just going to note the ketones and try not to be too concerned.

Ah, those pesky ketones! Try to keep him eating and drinking as much water as he will. Do you have one of those fountain things? Or if he enjoys drinking from the tap?

Hopefully those nice blue numbers will continue and soon those ketones will be banished!

we have a couple fountains but he is not a fan. He has a favorite ceramic water dish that he has full access to, and uses well. I think just not being here yesterday morning to offer the same amount of snacks and food I usually do kept his caloric intake down a bit yesterday. Today we are off to a good start he has eaten a lot already

IMHO a kitty with a history of DKA should not go 24 hours without a ketone check. Once BK went from ‘ trace’ to ‘large’ in exactly 24 hours.

I am leaning that way more and more, especially with how quickly he can spike. At least until his avg BG is lower anyway.
Keep in mind, BG does not have to be crazy high for ketones to develop. There have been kitties over the years who have developed ketones with numbers in the 200s.

Testing for ketones is so easy, whether it’s checking blood using a special meter or checking urine with the time honored ketostix. It can save a cats life.

@Garciacat thank you so much for the suggestions on raw food!

I bought several kinds of Stella and Chewys, and the Primal nuggets and at first...I was very disappointed at first as the kits did not seem to like any of the types...turkey, chicken, goose or chicken/salmon primal.

but as it turns out, it was just going to take some time. I started by giving little bits of the nuggets as treats, dry.

Little by little all the cats are eating more and more re-hydrated, and Hendrick in particular is eating the turkey and chicken really well now!
